  1. I would have thought a set of electric bass guitar strings should do the job. Maybe go for slightly higher tension as there is nearly a 9" difference in length, on the other hand they might just work with the lower tension too. This has intrigued me so much, I've got a cello in the workshop that would sound awesome tuned as a bass. If interested I will post my experiences! Cheers, Kai
  2. With better picture that can easily be identified and valued. It is a German bass from early 20th Century, a few condition issues to consider though, has it been over varnished? They are normally varnished with a spirit varnish that never peels like this. Second question if so, why? Is the varnish hiding cracks? Check the neck in particular, it could be broken at the heel or near the head, is the neck beech or maple? Those basses usually have an Eb-stop, not very popular these days but common. I'd love to see pictures of the rest! Best wishes, Kai PS: Geoff, you have learned a lot about basses.... I'm really pleased to read your insightful comments!
  3. I have seen the gear4music instruments, the basses are ok, but as said earlier, I'd really recommend lowering the bridge and changing the strings. Unfortunately the fingerboards on them are very uneven and need sorting out, then you can have a nice low action without buzzes. The bows are inferior to the instruments. If anyone gets them, please check that the hair isn't too long and that the sides of the frog fit to the stick without the sharp edges of the underside cutting into your hand! Good luck, Kai
  4. Hello BassInMyFace, if you have a million questions I might be able to help you with them. I wish you luck with sorting out your adjustable bridge, if you need any help I'm happy to assist. I've done bass repairs for almost 15 years and things a novice might struggle with can be easy and straightforward to the luthier. I can talk you through it step by step and we can figure out what needs doing to improve the bass. Pictures help :-) Best wishes, Kai PS: Thanks Sean for the plug :-)
