1. Glad to see that it has the correct bridge like the original SB1000. The current Aria SB1000RIB re-issue (non CB version) has some horrible Gotoh bridge that looks all wrong.. see http://www.ariaguitars.com/english/products/sb-1000ri

I had a SB1000 in the 80s, seem to remember it was bloody heavy..

2. All the reasons above are why I have not yet bought a Jazz basses for keeps over the past 20 years, all of the ones I have tried have had manufacturing faults..

- Neck pockets where you could park cars in the gap.
- Bridges not on the centre line.
- Gaps between the control plate and the pickguard.
- Pickguards off centre.
- Frets that are poorly seated and very poorly dressed.
- Stiff pots
- Banana necks

But one of the worst I saw recently was a $5k Master Built Jazz, so even getting a master built custom shop doesn't guarantee quality..!

That said, I have two Strats, both beautifully built - seems Fender can make guitars, but not basses.. <_<

I wouldn't pay that for the Select Jazz. Nice, but its a Fender pre so probably not that great.

Thx Musicman, could you elaborate on what you see as the limitations of the Fender pre? I presume it is the same as the Deluxe Jazz pre, which was limited in tones, compared to say a Sadowsky..?

4. Buddy of mine is contemplating between these two:

Fender Select Active Jazz
http://www.fender.co...tive-jazz-bass/

vs

Suhr Classic J-bass
http://www.soundpure...urst-18139/5519

Which would you choose and why? I know the Select Active is brand new, but assume it is just a better spec American Deluxe Jazz?

I've had about 5 Fender Jazz basses over the years, always moved them on because each one had some flaw I couldn't live with, so I'd struggle to be objective.

The new Select Active does look nice, but Suhrs always seem to be better made, though not tried a Suhr bass myself.

Anyone got experience here to add..?

Thx,
Mark

For this gig... DB750 and DB410... or 2x210's. or 810 if you can justify the cab.
The amp is killer on decent stages... too much for a pub tho, IMO

You mean the Aguilar DB750? Great amp, love the tones but such a noisy fan..

Now that is what I call a fine pair! I have a latent Rickenbacker itch which has wanted scratching for 30 years.. I've tried to resist indulging myself, but this thread isn't helping <_<

I don't perceive that difference in models when it comes to 4 strings. I have five of them, all 4strings: three MkI's and two MkII's. The only variance I hear is there from the wood that was used..
Yup, this is my perception too. Fretboard wood, facing wood makes a bigger difference than MkI vs Mk II.. Though the fretboard on a MkII is longer than a MkI, so I guess that must have some input?

The walnut on your fretless MK1 looks a bit different than normal walnuts, really nice! Is that some special kind of walnut?
Good question. Finishes as follows:

Mk I fretless is Figured Claro Walnut.
Mk I fretted is Flamed Maple
Mk II fretless is American Walnut.
Mk II fretted 4 string is Figured/Birdseye Maple
Mk II fretted 5 string is Flamed Maple

The fretless basses look quite different colour Walnut, don't they?

:)
