1. Hi At the momment i am in need of a 5 string bass and would like to trade only. I have a Squier Jazz bass in natural ( Vintage Modified) and am looking for something of the same quality/caliber as this bass is Fantastic. There is not a chip or dent or a scratch on it since owning it. it has one of the best slap tones i've ever heard. The aesthetics are pleasing, one reason why i bought it. Classic 70's look. Not used as much as my other bass and it's had brand new strings on recently. In the mean time if you do not know what it looks like here are some stock pictures (cant take pictures as i cant find the camera lead) feel free to pm me Midlands Area.
  2. My question is How do they make these songs so beautifully on the bass. I mean you can actually sing along with them because they match the lyrics so deadly close, i just dont understand how they do it ? Victor wootens Isn't she lovley Marcus millers - billie jean HOW DO THEY DO IT LOL
  3. Hi guys i have finally learnt how to play this tune but now when i listen to it again, Jamerson plays with his funny off beat rhytmns which i can not get in my head. Can someone help me out here or give me some kind of excercises to play it correctly ? Thanks
  4. The reason why i'm asking this odd question is that i've got a audition at Coventry Uni and they would like me to do a solo performance within a song i have chosen to do. I have my band ready its just a bass solo :S I'd rather groove and slap it Lmao
  5.
If it's improvised, then it is indeed as you suggest experience and fretboard knowledge. I guess most of can make up a tune in our heads - a singer can "just sing it", and the experienced, studied and practised instrumentalist can "just play it".
Thats what i was about to get at. Everyone has their own melody in their heads but its the how am i going to apply this on the freatboard that kinda kills me off lol
  6.
There are no "should"s! (That's perhaps a separate discussion, vaguely related to the "musical snobs" thread - who cares for the opinions of people hung up on what you "should" or "should not" be playing?) I'd rather listen to a good pre-composed solo than a bad improvised one. A show-off solo is fine by me if it's in a show-off context - we gasp at acrobats at the circus, so why not? But a show-off solo in the middle of a "regular" song - no thanks! Here's a nice example of a non-acrobatic solo, at around 2'10": short, sweet, and fits the song:
It's just i feel like something is missing from me when i pre compose a solo and then play it rather than something very good improvised, i just want to know how the big boys do it, if you get me ?
  7.
I wouldn't do a solo, personally, not my thing... however, if I had to sit through one, I'd rather the player did something musical, in keeping with the song (it's not a solo taking the place of a song, is it? ) and avoided just dazzling me with super-fast clacking and popping because I just don't care for w*** or, worse again, some poxy tapping. It should sound good to the ear and should be mercifully brief. Well, you did ask.
I kind of agree with you there. Personally, i also don't like people who want to play at 100mph at a solo or doing there triplets again and again and again and again, Lol. I would say im into the more melodic part of solo'ing as you have said. Someone like Marcus Miller i would say, he solo's but it is very melodic in a way but also his own basslines are simple but groovy. Take Jean Pierre for instance the bassline at the beginning is so simple but catchy and then when he begins to do other things
  8. By the way i just wanted to know .... is it 'bad' to pre-make (couldn't find another word LOl) a solo ? It should be spontaneous and what your feeling inside at that right momment shouldn't it ? I was reading something about this the other day and someone had said that Jaco Pre-made all his solo's so it kind of changed my mind. Now im just sitting here confused.
  9. I know there are going to be people from different sides saying "bass should also be able to solo" as well as "bass solo's ruin the experiance" but i just wanted to know what makes a good bass solo ? How do you guys go about it ? Do you look at the lead sheet stick the chords in your head and change from place to place, Or do you do what i do, pounce around on the fretboard hoping for an idea to magically come into my brain I know it takes me around half an hour to come up with something good to solo over but there are people and we all know that can just begin a solo and take your breath away, mind me asking, how do they do it ? experiance ? knowledge of the fretboard ? or just meant to be ? Thanks Hope i get a lot of answers on this thread

  12.
I know you don't want to hear it but iPad2 all the way for me man. I've got over 4000 sheets on it, battery life is top notch, especially as you don't need the screen brightness that high. I've had it since may & it's not let me down yet. iRealB is great for it again.
What about the ipad 1, have u used that ? Haven't got much saved at the momment lOl
  13. HIya guys dont know if this belongs in the 'general' section but hey ho lOl Basically ive been looking around the market for a tablet which is easy and portable. The main usage of my tablet would be to read music sheets in pdf formats or some other well known formats. It would just make life easier rather me lugging around a load of sheet music here and there. My question is apart from the Ipad 2 or 1 for that matter, is there any other tablets out there that are affordable but will work great as well ? My budget would be around 150 give or take. Nice size screen and battery life is what im mostly looking into. Maybe a few apps, games here and there ... Would love for you guys to help me out or give some reccomendations Thanks
  14.
This is always good. I had one this morning............ Keep the feck away from Basschat. BIG FAIL. Garry
LOl I will still be here trynna grab 2nd hand basses xD
  15.
You are going for all the right reasons. Enjoy, have a good time - and good luck with it all. Garry
Thank You And Dont Worry I Will Keep You All Posted
  16. Well i guess i should say thanks for all the opinions on this topic, and NO i have not been trolling or hiding behind the sofa. I think i have mentioned before that as well as playing bass i also do the tech side, meaning using logic, sampling etc etc. Also i wouldn't mind teaching. Its the Musical career which i want to follow. Also Im not going to university just for the paper as many of you think. Im going because i know i will get taught by some great musicians, i will increase upon my theory even more and more so make those contacts everyone is mentioning. At the end of the day I think that whatever choice I make will be the right one, im not looking to get that mansion or the ferrari. Just a nice lifestyle, be able to stand on my feet and look after my parents when they get older. Thats all i want.
  17.
Sorry, but that’s b0ll0cks mate! It is very true that the age of the session musician has diminished to the point of being almost irrelevant, but there is still a demand for music only now it is in entirely different ways The one guy I’ve known who has become a millionaire from actually playing music was always a very good but uninspired player (no where near the best), but has made his money from composing music for computer games. Guess what – he’s got a music degree! Another guy I know makes a decent living from composing background music, jingles, etc – again he has studied music I don’t think that it matters too much when it comes to live work, thru having that background can’t hurt! However, the piece of paper you get from a music degree is in itself pretty worthless! To be honest, it is certainly true that you may struggle to make a good living just from playing life and all my mates who do play for a living have to supplement their income by teaching, freelancing for PA companies, etc I think that it is a given that in taking a music degree you are committing yourself to actually making a living from music as it is not going to help you get a job in the same way as a History (or other non-vocational) degree will….. To the OP – good luck, it ain’t an easy way of making a living!
I do know its going to be tough etc etc. But i'll keep my options open and see whats going to be the best one after graduating Thanks
  18.
No worries dude Providing you go into it knowing what you are getting is what you want, then you will learn a great deal, and it will be a really good experience.
And if that dosen't work out too good, im pretty nifty on the Tech side of music as well, so hopefully its a win/win for me. Time will tell.
  19.
Ofcourse, and I didn't mean to make it sound like you had said that. I was just saying that in my personal experience, (finished a chemistry degree with a first), the degree isn't what really matters anymore, it's the transferrable skills, and I think providing you put the work in, that the music degree can be worthwhile. I have taken the option of doing a Chemistry PhD at Oxford, as it lets me do some truly amazing work, and also gets me some great connections for later in life.
Oh sorry about that then, you can interpret text in many different ways lmao And i do think its just down to motivation, willingness to better yourself and generally putting yourself out there as well as having the talent
  20.
This isn't true, and with the greatest of respect, spoken like someone who obviously has no understanding of what a lot of the good musical institutes are designed for. That goes for all the people harping on about how the degree at the end of it means squat. One massive piece of advice I'll offer anyone planning on going to study music with a view to becoming a working musician: make sure you're going to University for the right reasons. Go to improve your craft, make contacts for future life and enjoy learning and being creative in an environment that will generally breed a high class of musician, depending on the institute you're at. You do not go to these places for the degree, in fact the degree should be an afterthought, albeit an afterthought that no one can take away from you for the rest of your life. As far as the death of the 21st century musician, well that's an entirely unpredictable thing and whoever claims that we're all on the path to being replaced by machines is scare mongering. True, much of the session work has died in many areas, but not all of the work has suddenly dried up, why would it? There will always be practical applications for the most talented musicians who want to work, and if you're a good musician then there should never be any reason for you to be out of pocket. You need to be outgoing, organised, willing to travel and open to new ideas, talent is just the half of it. You need to be ready for most eventualities, and you'll need to be able to read and understand music. With these skills under your belt, you'll hopefully have a long and prosperous career as a musician.
Perfect
  21.
I do understand what you are saying, but that shouldn't be a big factor in why you go to uni. With the job market as it is, and the fact that there are so many students, just having the degree doesn't get you as far as it used to.
I'm not saying that im valuing the degree at the end, as i think i did say, i do want to progress as a musician and someone stated before, meet others that are around my age and love music. I mean i know some people who kinda didnt bother going uni and said ill rough it out playing drums, guitar, they kinda ended in fast food, so you see as well as doing something i love i know that i will have a peice of paper that shows it as well
  22.
The first part is fine. The second sentence does't mean squat mate.
What i mean is that having a degree on my CV would set me apart from someone who hasn't. Looking at whats happening around here you only get employed nowadays on what you have on your CV rather than word of mouth
  23.
It must be great having your head in the clouds. But when you get to the real world, an employer will have no problem chucking your CV straight in the bin. There are still people going after proper degrees these days, after all. Well, you might not get a career per se but a music degree may get you a job. There will always be toilets in need of scrubbing and burgers in need of flipping, I suppose.
Teaching will still be an option and i doubt that you can become a teacher without the degree ... That may just be my backup but in all fairness that would be my last option, i would try and do something about it
  24.
To make money as a musician nowadays is by have your fingers in all pies. In terms of recording(session) work, yeah it has gone down massively, but people are still recording tv/radio jingles. I reckon live music is as popular as it has ever been so there is live work out there. Theres always the function/wedding market, teaching, cruises, writing etc...... Works out there, you just need the drive to work for it! Edit; Also, in terms of education, it's up to you. Whether you think you need the education, the experience & the knowledge that you'll be taught, or if you think your ready to jump in the big competitive market that musicians work in.
I do want to go to uni just to gain more knowledge on my instrument and being a musician overall. Also its a degree so it sets me apart from others if you get what i mean
  25. Hi Background Info: Im a music student who is currently at Grade 8 Bass (Rockschool). Im going to apply for university this year and do a Full 3 year music degree in my speciality - Bass. Current: Now i've been told by Loads of people that i shouldnt opt for this career as its pretty much going to die in the next couple of years. I understand that nowadays unlike before musicians were the ones that were recording, now its all being sampled by some guy sitting at a Mac. Session musicians are becoming a thing of the past ? I mean, im not looking for finishing Uni and becoming a famous mega rich star because of my bass skills but I wanted to be playing in maybe big bands, record for artists and if that dosen't work out i dont mind teaching I just wanted to get some views from you guys who are all musicians and what you think about this ? Any advice would be great
