What are some of you guys favourite settings? I'm enjoying amongst others;

Neck pickup - 2 (not pulled up)
Bridge Pickup - 10 (not pulled up)
Balance - 3 notches from full neck pickup
Volume - 10 (pulled up)
My current favorite sound:

Bridge LFP - 7-10 (pulled up)
Neck LPF - 5-6 (not pulled up)
Balance - 2 notches towards bridge
Volume - 6 (pulled up)

Best Bass for Metal :P

2. Oh my, I did miss quite some great posts during the last couple months. Congratulations to everyone for the new additions!

Kev, great to see you found an MkII to your liking. It's a real beauty!

Im litterally sitting looking at the John East site now trying to decide if I should put a 2 or 3 EQ preamp in this Classic5? My heart says 2EQ my head says 3EQ for the getting in the mix as 4 strings states :o
With the John East preamps, the 3EQ is actually a 2EQ with a semi-parametric mid section inserted after the 2EQ preamp. It's like going with a 2EQ bass directly into a mixing console and use the parametric mids on the console. It's brilliant. I installed one in my 1986 Sabre where the original preamp was fried.

Overall the 3EQ John East preamp very nicely catches the MM 2EQ characteristics but with useful additions of a very nice sounding bright switch and the semi-parametric mid control. And with the stacked knob design it fits easily into a original 2 EQ MM bass.

And then there's this, 1980. Bought from a BCer a little while ago now, it's a proper 'Ray. Slim neck, low action, punchy sound and in excellent nick. Been no.1 bass on and off, as it is now. Bought as some recording found the sound of my long time singular Jaydee to be wanting in body. It has never disappointed.

Guess it's taken me a long while to post this. Probably not to many people's tastes.

took some updated pics today:
'90 MkII midi, '09 MkII
'00 MkI, '86 MkI, '90 MkI

Beautiful pics, Mike, thanks for sharing!
I think the one I envy most is the Midi bass.

BTW, all of yours have ebony boards, is that correct?

Here is a clip of me playing it. There are more clips if you go to my youtube channel. Hope this helps:

Way cool, great groovy fretless playing and tone to die for. Thanks!

BTW, Mike, I'm also digging the tone in Wombatboter's video where he sits on the sofa playing a Mk1 fretless ... that took a part in convincing me that I need a fretless Wal :)

Oli,
The five string basses do have wider pickup spacing than the 4 strings. But, if you look through the Wal database, at least from the instruments submitted to that list, there have been folks who requested closer spacing. Oddio's MkIII 5 has the pickups stacked pretty close together.
Thanks Mike. That's what I suspected. Oddio's MkIII is way cool. Would love to know how it sounds. I did check the Wal database (which unfortunately seems to be not maintained anymore) but couldn't find any hints on pickup spacing. But I found a couple of other interesting details :)

So the 2009 bass Bobpalt was selling now is mine, and someone snapped a pic of last weekends gig doing its' thing.
Thumbs up for being so brave! I'm not sure I'd take my Wals to a gig. Yet. BTW, I envy your gigging schedule. Both of my band projects are currently in the song writing and rehearsal phase. Hope to be back on stage by spring next year.

10. BTW, measurements were done on these two...

English olive ash facings on that one. Don't know about varying pickup placements on MKIIs though - maybe Mike's was a custom configuration?
But, seriously - you don't need it to be nearer the neck unless you want to start WW3 with it ;)
I just used the Wal for recordings - what a nuclear assault ...
Ok. Now my curiousity is wakened...

MkII 4 string
Distance from 24th fret to first row of pole pieces: 7.5 cm
Distance between pickups, 2nd and 3rd row of pole pieces: 5cm

MkII 5 String
Distance from 24th fret to first row of pole pieces: 6.5 cm
Distance between pickups, 2nd and 3rd row of pole pieces: 6cm

Thus, the neck pickup on my 5er is closer to the neck... and if you check out various pics of MkII and MkIII 5 strings in this thread, it seems that there are two different placements available.

Gone full circle: my 1987 MKII 5 is back home again :D:
Beautiful! What wood are the facings on this one?
Also, could it be that MkII 5 have different spacings of pickups depending on age? My (formerly mikeswals') '93 looks as if the neck pickup is closer to the neck...

13.
Curiously I did swap the necks before seeing your post. You are spot on, the neck H is really precision like on the fretted and the 2eq just right on the fretless. Respect!

Great!

Wow! That's a nice Pre-EB collection!

The blue bass is a work in progress, looks great, just need an off white pickguard for it, really like the mutes on the bridge! Original 3 band pre, Seymour Duncan p/up (anyone got an original MM p/up? Or lane poor??) it's not finished yet, just not got round to doing the soldering
The blue refin looks phantastic. A mint green/white pickguard would probably look pretty cool on that. Those pickups are hard to find, need to wait for someone silly enough to replace their original with a third party PU and sell the original. From what I've heard the Nordstrand are also fine replacements.

How do you like the East preamp compared to the original 3 band? I'm thinking of putting a MMSR 4 knob 3 band into one of my HH 'Rays. I'm also contemplating of putting a MMSR 3 know 3 band into one of my Sabres. But I wonder whether it would really make that much of a difference.

DD I is simply the best finish they ever did. There are quite a few other brilliant and great looking rare EBMM finishes, but this one tops all of them. Love those inlays!

17. Philou is a great guy to work with, who went out of his way to make me feel comfortable. He was always very polite and upfront with his communication and even called me on the phone to make sure the bass arrived ok. The high value bass he sold to me was described exactly as is, with all features and minor cosmetic issues very well documented. When it arrived, the instrument actually exceeded my expectations.

Highly recommended.
