1. If you care about the music you make, you never stop learning. Whether that means taking lessons or simply applying yourself to a study prinicple (i.e. buying a book on Latin bass, joining a band and getting that kind of groove under your hands) is a choice that you have to make. I find going out for a lesson or just taking a gig where I get my ass handed to me is musically very refreshing and invigorating.... d
2. Hey guys - I'll be doing an In-store evening with Music Man at Absolute Music in Poole on Thursday 20th of May. It'll run from 7 - 9 and I'll be doing a bit of playing and chatting about a whole range of stuff, from EQ settings to technique, keeping your practice musical to coping with performance anxiety. If you wanna come along, just get in touch with the chaps at the store. Here's the details: Absolute Music Solutions Ltd 58 Nuffield Road Poole BH17 0RT http://www.absolutemusic.co.uk/store/index.php d
3. Hey guys and girls - I have 5 free spaces on the guestlist to our masterclass coming up at the ICMP, Kilburn on Monday 19th April. The masterclass will be covering grooving, improvising and composing in Odd time signatures. For those of you who'd like to develop your playing in Time Signatures other than 4/4, this is a prime opportunity.... If you'd like to be on the list, email me at [email protected] - first come first served... :-) d
4.
And i was 2 then...... I did however get to do my audition just before the school moved from Acton then did the 1 year diploma in Kilburn a few years back. Memory is a bit hazy for that particular episode......can't think why....? Did John Curry and Paul Scott work there back then? Absolute legends, whereas that Dave Marks chap.....well..... Rich
oops.... did I do something wrong? :-)
5. I'll get around the country with Musicman in the rest of 2010. Just got details finalised for a masterclass in Poole, so dates up north should hopefully follow. Re: Getting new basses.... it's hard to say - it depends what you already have, and what sort of stuff you want to play..... I'll take a look at those models when I do the masterclass and might be able to give you a better idea.... d
6.
Hey, Dave, I doubt, that I'll make masterclass, obviously.. but, I'm just curious - does it mean, that you're now 'oficially' playing MusicMan's, not Sei's anymore (as your main basses)?
It depends on the gig... if the musicman is a good choice, i'll play it. If the gig is like a heavy jazz or fusion gig, the Seis come out. I still use my Marcus Fender Jazz and my P bass... I let the music decide for me. It doesn't benefit anyone if I play at a gig or in a session with a bass that has the wrong sound for what I need to deliver :-) d
7. It will start at 7pm and go on until 9pm. There will be a large selection of Musicman basses there for you to have a play on. Entry is free, but spaces are limited, so you need to call the Bass Merchant to reserve a seat! Tel: 01206 751173 Here's the press for the event: Musicman UK presents an exclusive Masterclass with Irish Bass extrordinaire Dave Marks. Dave's playing credits include guitar Gods Larry Carlton, Albert Lee & Matthais Eklund, ex-Squeeze vocalists Paul Carrack and Chris Diffford, D:Ream, Gareth Gates, prog rock drum legend Carl Palmer (ELP), Saintsaviour (Groove Armada vocalist) and many more.... Dave is one of the UK's foremost players and educators, writing a very popular column in Bass Guitar Magazine and having taught at the London ICMP for the last 9 years. He keeps a solid web presence with music and educational material on his own website and his Youtube channel has had nearly 2 1/2 million views! His masterclass will focus on time, groove and note choice, but he'll be taking questions throughout, so feel free to come along and steer him into topics you want covered! Also, don't be suprised if you find yourself onstage with him, playing some grooves on a delicious Musicman bass....
8. Hey guys - just posting a quick note about a masterclass that I'll be doing over in Colchester. Thursday 15th April, in association with MusicManUK, I'll be hitting the Bass Merchant, Colchester to deliver a masterclass. (Time TBC) The Bass Merchant, Unit D1 Colchester Seedbed Centre, Wyncolls Road, Severalls Ind.Est, Colchester, Essex, UK, CO4 9HT Tel: 01206 751173 http://www.bassmerchant.com My masterclass will focus primarily on time, rhythm and feel, but I'm gonna leave it open to lots of Q & A, so if people want advice on something specific, they need just pipe up and steer things to the topic of their choice. :-) I'll be asking people to jump and play things for / with me, so don't be totally suprised if you find yourself grooving on my Stingray..... d http://www.davemarks.com

16. I've just posted my Marcus Miller Style file onto my site. It's from waaaaay back in Bass Guitar Magazine issue 32, so if any of you worked on it, but wanted to hear what the bass parts should have sounded like, you can now listen to mp3 examples, as well as play along to bass-less tracks (one slowed down for practice, and one at the original tempo.) Best of all.... it's all free. :-) Let me know what y'all think of this format. I may give more of my old columns the same treatment..... d
17. Hey guys (and girls) I have 4 spaces left on my reserve list for a masterclass that I'll be doing at the ICMP, Kilburn. Here's the info: "Dave Marks & Darren Ashford - February 24th For all instruments, this groove-based masterclass features two of the ICMP's finest, bass tutor Dave Marks and drum tutor Darren Ashford, presenting a progressive approach to developing your sense of time and feel, helping to unlock the secrets behind a selection of 'classic' grooves." (It's very similar to what we were doing at the 2010 bass day, but across 2 hours, instead of crammed into 30 mins :-))) If you'd like to come along, mail me at [email protected] d
18. Hey Rich - You got em yet? I can send you over a pdf of the original score if you like... Seeing as yr going to such lengths. :-) d

Ghetto Upgrade is a slice of staggered beat hip hop, featuring myself, Darren Ashford on drums and regular Janek Gwizdala cohort Oli Rockberger on keys.
