1. Cool, should say then that the next show will be with Bardo Pond and The Pirate Ship Quintet at the Croft on August 5th.
Also playing Supernormal festival (10th/11th/12th Aug) and Fat Out Fest on 26th Aug.

We're off on tour after that and still need to find shows for the 30th and 31st if anyone has any suggestions. We'll entertain suggestions anywhere in England/Wales really at this stage.

  2. Here's some footage (ok, the whole set) of my band ANTA playing live the other week supporting XXL (Xiu Xiu/Larsen) at The Croft in Bristol. Thought some of you might be interested.

  3. For sale here is a Shure Beta 87a super cardioid condenser mic. It's in decent working condition with a few scrapes on the body and a few bits where some of the paint has come away. Fully working though and sounding great. They are very clear, hifi sounding mics and are great on many other things as well as vocals. Good on snare (particularly under), hi hats, brass, even bass cabs. Get The Blessing apparently used these for all the brass on one of their albums (I forget which).

These were Shure's top of the range stage vocal mics for a while before being replaced by the KSM9 which sell for over £350. These still retail at £215 at DV. The cheapest I've seen them sell for recently on eBay is £111 so mine is up here for £100 including the Shure bag but without a clip.

    In Shure's words:

WHAT IS THE BETA 87A BEST SUITED TO?

The Shure Beta 87A is a premium quality supercardioid hand-held condenser vocal microphone with exceptionally smooth frequency response and high sound pressure level capability. It is ideal for a professional lead or backing vocalist either on stage, for live recording or in the studio.
WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BETA 87A?

The Beta 87A features a controlled low-frequency roll-off that compensates for proximity effect and prevents the “boomy” sound often associated with close pick-up. The tailored frequency responce with its presence rise , brightens the upper midrange and helps the vocals cut through the mix. The tight supercardioid pattern provides maximum isolation from other vocalists or instruments while offering minimal off-axis coloration. It operates on phantom power.

Smooth frequency response with gradual presence rise

Highly consistent supercardioid polar pattern provides superior gain-before-feedback

Electronic low-frequency roll-off compensates for proximity effect

Wide dynamic range (117 dB) and low distortion characteristics

Very low susceptibility to RFI and electromagnetic hum

Advanced cartridge shock-mount system absorbs mechanical shocks and reduces handling noise

Built-in pop filter reduces undesirable wind and breath sounds

Legendary Shure quality and reliability
4. SlapbassSteve, you're not gonna have feedback problems from a loud singer shouting into a low impedance/high output mic. You're more likely to have feedback problems from a quiet singer using a high impedance mic (as is the case here).

If you're not getting the clarity you want from a SM58 you probably either need to tweak your EQ (try taking away some low mids and bass) or it's an old knackered mic. Having said that, it depends on the singer/band and the PA of course and I do sometimes prefer Beta57/58's and Audix OM6/OM7's. These mics have quite dramatic EQ which are designed to improve intelligibility.

  5. Mostly down to SM58's being totally bulletproof I think really. Plus most PA systems up and down the land are set up and voiced to them. I kinda agree with charic's earlier post too though, might be worth just matching whatever your lead/other singer(s) are using. Easier to set up/voice out a PA if you're all using the same vocal mics usually.

  6. Just get a secondhand SM58. Keep an eye out on the newly listed Buy it Nows in the eBay mics section, they often come up for under £50. That's how I got all mine. Make sure it's from a respectable UK seller though.

If you really need to get a new one then yea, look at the Sennheisers or Beyerdynamics.

  7. Slightly odd question this (and possibly off topic, mods feel free to move it of course).
I'm looking for a reasonably priced van person (or someone with a big car I guess) to do a little courier job this weekend.
I just bought an amp on eBay (Ampeg B25b and matching 2x15) which is in Worcester Park, Surrey. I'm in London on Saturday for a gig in Whitechapel and had originally hoped to collect it on the way home (to Bristol) on Sunday but the seller isn't around at all.
Unfortunately I'm not able to leave early enough on the Saturday to have enough time to collect it before soundcheck in Whitechapel.

Soooo.... I am after a van man that I can pay to collect it from Worcester Park and take it to me in Whitechapel.

Anyone know anyone who might be up for such a job? Obviously I'll pay petrol too.

  8. Weird, was expecting to get the highest on Emotional Connection and low on the others..
    I got:

    Enthusiasm - 98%
    Musical Perception - 99%
    Emotional Connection - 57%
    Social Creativity - 95%
    Musical Curiosity - 99%
