1. Jeff responded to my 'Fender American Deluxe P Bass' ad almost straight away. How lucky I was!
Great seller, good description & fast delivery.
I'm really pleased with the bass...and rather like Mikkel-S, it's almost like it was meant to be...

Thoroughly recommended!

2. My Father was an extremely good piano player and both my parents sang in a choir for years, so my early year were all classically influenced. Learning an instrument (first piano, then trumpet) was actively encouraged although I didn't stick with either instrument as the music I listened to was all 'electric'. I took the bass up some years afterwards in the late 80's. Put it down for over 20 years, and started up again about three years ago. My decision to take up the bass initially was purely my own as it was the instrument I'd always listened to.
I'm not really a natural, I can't read a note of music and have no idea what notes I'm playing...but I do this for my own enjoyment. That's it really :)

3. I've just bought a second hand MIA Fender P bass from a seller on this forum...it's a red one, but hey, I'll have to live with that! ;)

I'm hoping that this'll scratch that itch. After some thought, I realised that if i went for a MIM Fender or the Squier CV I'd spend all the time I had it wondering what the MIA would be like. So thought it would be best to just dive in...it's not that much over my initial budget...really.

Thanks to all that contributed to the thread.

The more expensive second hand ones will be MIA. If not then the seller is taking the piss.

The MIM standard P-Bass is okay. I preferred the Classic 50s when I compared the two but it is a good bit more expensive.

According to a lot of people, the Squier Classic Vibe 70s P-Bass is better and cheaper than the Fender standard P. That wouldn't surprise me if it's true, especially the pickups, because Squier CV guitars have better pickups than standard Fenders. It does have "Squier" on the headstock though which may or may not matter to you.

Thanks. I'll have a look at the Squier more closely.
I've already got a Squier P bass (1996 era) which I put flatwounds on, but it just doesn't feel quite right if I'm honest. The other problem (haha) is that I recently bought a Ibanez SR500 which completely overshadows the P-bass. I'd just like something a bit nicer to put my flats on ;) The Classic may just do the trick.

5. I have my eye on a new (MIM according to the sales chap) P bass, here: http://www.guitargui...=11092910403058 (needs to be black I'm afraid ;) )

That's kind of about the money I'm prepared to pay for another bass.
I've been looking around here & on 'another auction site' recently for second hand Fenders, most of which are either for sale in the States and/or are up around the £1k region.

My query is really whether the new one (above) is of good quality, and is the price difference between new & second hand purely down to collectability.
Also MIA P basses are available new, but again, they're out of my reach financially....is there a huge difference between MIM & MIA as new? the price would seem to suggest that there is...

TIA

Just a quick follow on from this thread. My mate (a bass player) just got back from seeing Alice Cooper here in France and has just mailed me to say that 2 Precisions were used (possibly tuned differently) but as far as he could tell, all the bass was live with fingers seemingly in the right places for what was happening.

Ah. Thanks.
I was right at the back, so in fairness was relying on the screen(s) to see what was going on on stage...and we all know how little 'air time' the bass players get! On second thoughts, perhaps being way back allowed me to hear the lower notes for some reason (extended wavelengths & other such waizardry)...but those notes were LOW !

7. Well that's what I typed into eBay & amongst some others, this came up:

http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1438.l2648

Has anyone tried these?

The problem I have is many fold...in short:
I spend much of my time playing along to albums I have on CD, some with relative success some with less. I'm playing by ear & having picked the bass up again after a (very) long break, can feel myself getting back into bad habits...mainly harmonising & improvising. I do enjoy just doing that, but want to try to nip it in the bud this time round.
When I first played bass no one had thought of the internets as a viable commercial system. Now with this invention at my fingertips I thought I'd better make use of it! I've tried half-heartedly looking for TABs but (for example) New Years Day by U2; there are several versions none of which seem quite right to me. So I thought perhaps I'd better get a book with a CD which will tell me how to do it properly!

So, short of taking lessons (I'm a bit out in the sticks) would this be a good idea...?

BTW - initially the idea I did have was to get a CD of some description that just has different kinds of drum beats on it, so I could make my own stuff up as I go. I'd still be interested if someone knows where I should look.

TIA

8. That's real shame.
Bought my little 'Rumble' practice amp from you when I re-started playing in August. The last one you had in store...it was put aside for me without mention of a deposit too.

Had it not been for your web site I may not have got the itch again either!

I wish you both the best for the future.
