1. Hey guys... Don't worry I haven't sold the 5 string lol! But yeah... the reason i'm using the 4 string is to make it less confusing for players out there.... man, all this stuff can be confusing enough without having me playing a 5 string strung E - C. Over and out. Scott http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 2. Hi guys, Just thought i'd show you an exercise I get my students to do... Soloing in one position only using chord tones. Try it out... It's tougher than it looks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzfC1hzARSY Easy. Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com

 7. BottomE... Sorry for not replying mate... didn't see anybody had posted. Anyway... tips for beginning improv... Start with chord tones first because they the 'meat and potatoes' of any sound/harmony. The scale then fills in the missing gaps. For instance a C major 7 chord is C,E,G,B... if we add 3 more notes (D,F,A) we have a major scale. So any arpeggio is only three notes away from being a full scale. That's why it's good to start working on the arpeggio/chord tones first because they're are the 'foundation' notes of any chord. The Dmin/major7th arpeggio on a G7... first of all make sure you can improvise comfortably just using the G7... then try move onto the Dmin/major7th. Try and come up with one lick that really works over the G7... use it over and over until the sound of the substitution gets drilled into your subconscious... for instance when I listen to someone improvising i can hear when they use different substitutions because i've got 'the sound' fully absorbed in my ear. Then when you can 'hear' that one lick you've been playing for a few days start to try and come up with other melodies that work. Hope that helps man. easy, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com

 12. Hey guys, I have a lot of students who in the past have found it tough to break away from just playing routes when coming up with there own bass lines. In this tutorial i've tried to give you a couple of methods that will help you break away from being stuck on the route and start to make your bass playing much more creative. The tune i'm demoing this stuff on is 'Perfectly Lonely' by John Mayer... With Pino Palladino on bass. Here's part 1... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWkea4LOHmM Take it easy, Scott. 14. Hey, just wanted to say i'm really enjoying your stuff! I've been looking into solo arrangements for bass lately... I've been listening to a lot of Ted Greene and Bill Frisell for inspiration. Anyhow, here's a little improvised arrangement of Autumn Leaves I recorded (apologies for the mic distortion... all my gear was breaking down at once lol)... Easy, Scott. 15. Hey guys it's been a long time... crazy summer gigs lol! Anyhow i'm back on it... so i've put two new tutorials together (on a new sexy camera yippee!!!). Both tutorials are covering the II V I progression. They're simply a couple of licks that can be applied over the chord progression - the key is to analyze each lick/melody and understand why they work over the II V I progression. Once you've leaned them stick them in as many different keys as you want and really try to play around with the phrasing. 1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgRbuVhHhps...feature=related]II V I Jazz Lick Bass Lesson (2) with Scott Devine 2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_fewYvGAqk]II V I Jazz Lick Bass Lesson (3) with Scott Devine Easy Scott.
Hey Scott Two very cool lessons here - really looking forward to incorporating these ideas into my own solos, and get part three up soon Keep up the good work Cheers Mike
Hey cheers for checking them out Mike! 17. Hey guys, Sorry for taking sooooooo long with part 2 of this tutorial... i've been on a gigging marathon! Anyhow, I finally got part 2 of my phrasing tutorial done. As always, I ran out of time so i'm going to have to cover (soloing contour etc) more stuff in a 'part 3'. In the part 2 tutorial I discuss transferable themes within a soloing context and how to get them into your playing. There's going to be a loads more video lessons coming soon! I'm pretty much booked solid for the next month but then things will ease off and i'll be able to get on the tutorials again, so watch this space! Here's part 2... http://scottsbasslessons.com/free-video-ba...-lesson-part-2/ Cheers guys, Scott. 18. Over the last few months I've been listening to a lot of solo guitar stuff and it's really inspired me to try and do something similar on bass. I've got so into it that i'm planning on recording and releasing an EP that will be made up entirely of solo arrangements of standards for the bass. This morning I was trying to plan out an arrangement of Autumn Leaves. Pretty much all of it's improvised although I did have an idea of the substitute chords I was going to try and throw in. I put a bit down on video but haven't recorded the entire arrangement... wanna keep it for the EP lol! It's recorded on my custom Overwater bass direct into the desk, no eq at all. Anyhoooo, here it is, hope you like it... (sorry - there's a little bit of distortion - my mic has decided to break!!!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e4LNnslrtU Easy, Scott. 20.
A great band I've been listening to based now in Brooklyn NYC, originally from Texas. They're all serious players. Not live bass on this particular tune (synth) but still absolutely superb.
Lol... what a small world! One of my best mates plays keys in this band. He's based in London but travels over to the states for gigs/tours etc. The fisrt time I met the bass player was in Otley... a tiny place just about 20 mins north of Leeds. Easy man, Scott. 21.
Haha! You nicked my gloves! What make are they? I use Jasmine Silk, quite durable and fit really well, but I'm looking for more durable ones. That was a very good lesson, thank you.
Yeah, I used to use the silk gloves but they don't last me more than two gigs max... which is waaaaay to costly when they're coming in at just under £10 a pair. I now use really thin woolen gloves from my local camping shop. They last around 20 gigs a pair and cost £3.99! WIN! easy man, Scott http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
 22. Hi Guys here's part one of a tutorial I've just filmed. I'm discussing what good and bad phrasing is within a soloing context, something that I believe really isn't discussed enough, as it really is an essential tool within any vocabulary. Apologies about the lighting (the dark to light effect), waiting for Kodak to post out a replacement camera! Here it is... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB9CbmLBs7Q as always, any questions fire away! Easy, Scott. 24. Heys guys, I've had quite a few emails about how to create walking bass lines over static minor chords. For instance when you get 16 bars of D minor. Good tunes to listen too for examples of this are 'So What' and 'Impressions'. Anyhooooo, here's the tutorial... http://scottsbasslessons.com/free-video-ba...s-like-so-what/ Hope it's helpful! On a side note, just read the explanation for the glove, massive respect for you, great to see you finding a way to handle the rubbish life sometimes chucks at us.
Hey cheers man!
