    I've never tried white spirit on plastic, but would imagine you'd get the same results as lighter fluid (the often used glue remover) which will result in a sticky blob where your scratchplate used to be. :lol:

    white spirit is quite inert
    lighter fluid sounds like it may not be
    but i wouldnt push anyone to use it if in doubt
    another fluid is methylated spirit...you can drink that... :lol: :) :rolleyes:

    I think what I'm going to do is play the gig tomorrow somehow, maybe just move the saddles up all the way and have a stupidly high action and take it to the gallery on Tuesday and ask for a set-up, anyone know how much Gallery takes for a proper good set-up ?

    you have some in the bow area and some in the action
    when adjusting bow it will relieve some in the action section
    the strings seem to be lighter so that the neck isnt so bowed etc

    white spirit followed by a soft cloth wetted and with washup
    dry with a fibre free cloth
    2 for 99p in tesco

    rob used to be the bass player with ABC and wrote a few songs for Alison Moyet
    and jon is a real craftsman and wizard with woods
    i saw the big single cut with the fan frets...a real work of art
    its good to see rough woods and machinery and then the finished article hanging like a jewel on the finishing section

  11. set the pitch of all the strings correctly
    check the settings of the neck and then saddles
    then intonation
    adjust as necessary
    its a strange thing for so much to go at the same time
    but the suggestion of differing tensions for similar strings from different manufacturers may be the reason
    but i have never had a string change in that smallness of difference that really affected anything except a bit of bow

  12. i set mine lowish..until all the strings dont sizzle when plucked open
    flattish bow and standard action usually achieves this
    i like softish feel to my fretting so use TI rounds or lowish tension sets from others
    if i want volume i dont batter the strings...fingerstyle
    i just turn up the vol
    i set my vol about 3/4 on the bass to give a measure of increment when necessary

    re: my action is at the octave around 1/8"..

    depends...rounds are brill..flat are fab
    no preference really but find TI rounds or flats the best
    rounds suit my dynamic range and flats get rid of skiff and give click instead...use them for retro feel

    keep tapping quietly at that corner and introduce some WD40
    remember...zen overcomes..

    ps will the corner allow you to get some twisting purchase ..how about a pic

    and if you do drill out you neednt worry about replacing the screw with a similar...use a machine screw with hex head
