Hi!
I just bought a used Yamaha SLB 200 bass fitted with D'Addario Helicore Pizzicatos after a twenty year break from upright bass almost only playing electric. I also got a new bow and rosin a week ago and am having trouble getting a decent sound when playing arco. When playing the G, D and most of the time A strings I get an ok sound but when playing the E string I'm getting a really harsh octave-ish harmonic instead.

I've narrowed it down to three possible causes:
1. Technique. I haven't played for 20 years.
2. New bow and rosin. I've tried different amounts of rosin and different tensions on the bow but to no avail.
3. Strings. Maybe the Helicore Pizzicatos aren't the best strings for bowing. Could perhaps changing to a set of strings made for arco playing solve most of the problem? I'm thinking Evah Pirazzi for instance.

I'm also considering lower tension strings since my weak programmer/electric bass playing fingers aren't used to the increased effort. How do lower tension strings affect the sound, playability and ease of bowing?

I'm mostly playing in a setting with a piano, a couple of vocalists, two acoustic guitars and violin, for your reference.

I have a 90's BN6 with double split coils as well but with a bolt on necka and in black/ceruse. Since i got it a couple of years ago and refretted it (it was defretted when I bought it) it's become my main bass and I've tried out and let Foderas, Celinders and Alleva Coppolos go, one by one. Fantastic bass - highly recommended!

Edit: I agree about the old preamp though. It's pretty much useless...

I'm selling my Alleva Coppolo RA5. It's an olympic wite nitro finish with an alder body and maple neck with a scale lenght of 34".

It both sounds and plays like a dream and I've got it strung with Thomastik Jazz Flats for a more "vintagey" sound. The bass has a few smaller dents and minor wear on the back of the bass and on the upper waist (or what ever it's called), i.e. normal nitro finish wear.

I've got a "vintage" Fbass from ~1992 with dual splitcoils. It sounds fantastic and I'm curious to why the configuration is so rare. Best of luck with the sale. It's a really cool bass!

I'm thinking of learning how to play a wind instrument. I've played bass for 25 years but have hardly touched a wind instrument. I'm a big fan of electronic wind instruments so I thought an Akai EWI would be a good place to start.
My thought is:[list]
[*]no struggling with learning how to just get a sound out of a reed or brass mouth piece
[*]no disturbing family and neighbours.
[*]fairly cheap if bought second hand

I'm curious how it would be to learn to play a "non-linear" instrument.

Have any of you bass or guitar players started to play a wind instrument and how was that process for you?

I'm considering selling or trading my Fodera since I'm mostly using my 6 str Fbass.

It's a 34" scale five string Emperor Elite with a chestnut top and (i think) an ash body. It's fitted with bartolini jazz pickups and a Hazlab preamp. It should weigh in at around 4.5kg but I can re-check this if needed. Of course it plays fantastically and sounds great both with the preamp on and off.

A part from a straight purchase a trade to something of similar value or lower+cash could be interesting. Preferably a 6str fodera, 5 or 6 string Fbass or a five-string jazz style deluxe (Sadowsky, Alleva Coppolo).

The bass is located in Stockholm, Sweden.

Please let me know if I've left something out!

I don't think so, therefore the quite low price. I'm also having thoughts of having it refretted and keeping it...

It plays wonderfully due to really low action and great balance. The two split coil pickups give it a really fat, clear sound, even with the bridge pickup soloed. It features the older parametric preamp. The scale length is 34 inches and it weighs around 4.5 kg if I remember correctly.[/font][/color]

The reason for selling is that my fretless intonation sucks and I haven't got the time to improve it...
