Are you comparing active Sandbergs with passive Fenders?  If so, I'd generally expect that even flat, an active bass has the potential to sound 'different'.

Otherwise basses constructed in exactly the same way from the same materials will sound similar.  Saying that I've found that body woods of Sandbergs are by and large lighter than Fenders (poss better seasoned) and iirc they are smaller than Fenders.  Sandbergs also have a zero fret and better quality bridges (IMHO), which potentially alters the tone.

What I mean is simply 'flat', whether in passive mode or active. From what i've heard in demos the active preamp doesn't appear to add a huge amount of colour which I appreciate. I'm just wondering if 'brighter' equals weedier or less good in a mix etc.

  2. I've always read that Sandbergs are 'brighter' than Fenders. Is this really the case? Do they simply need an EQ tweak to get in the same ballpark? I'm assuming it's the pickups.

I keep looking at California VTs with the reverse P/J config wondering if it would add something 'more' to a passive Fender US P bass and not sound 'less'.

  3. Having done a bit of research I think the answer is no, but I thought I'd ask here. While I like the Fender lightweight tuners they added from 2008 on, I'm not keen on the huge clover pegs (still trying to look like a double bass). I'd prefer smaller Y pegs a la Hipshot. The 2008 tuners i have, have no drill holes, while a Hipshot would require a newly drilled hole which i'd like to avoid at this point.

Alternatively, if you could just change the pegs and keep the rest of the tuner housing, that would be great but I assume that's non-starter.

Mine look like the attached image.

Has anyone tried something similar? Thanks.

  4. I think the original 2x15 cabs were around 300w.

A 100w class D head that size makes little sense. It must be 1000w, especially as I reckon they're going after the 'stoner' market, were original Beta Leads and the like are sought after.

  5. I'm also searching for one. I had narrowed it down to the MXR M87, Boss BC-1x, TCE SpectraComp and Empress Bass Comp.

My brain thinks that I ought to go for the Empress and be done with it, but would I be equally happy with the slightly cheaper M87? It sounds good in demos and whilst the Boss has that threshold pot, it sounded a little more processed to be in some demos vs the M87.

I'm after a transparent one which will just help with a the transients which get past my own control. Would the SpectraComp just work too? The one knob is both good (easy) and bad (feels less versatile). I'm not one to spend hours on FX pedal editing software.

12At7's have half the gain available from memory. Do you still get full volume at the point they hit breakup?

I never had any volume issues gigging it. If anything it was clearer at louder levels. They are loud anyway, with the originals delivering 500w at 4 or 8 ohms.

My Terror goes from clean straight to wet fart and then on to various degrees of shart.

I have to run it clean and use a preamp pedal for gain.

The best thing I ever did to my TB was to fit a pair of East German RFT 12AT7s. It resulted in lots more clean headroom before any break-up sets in. Fat too.

Nice!  I like the '55 P bass style. Kinda regret not picking up one of the CS ones from a few years back.

Back then?  We're not talking the 1940s.  The t-shirt I'm currently wearing pre-dates my NR purchase!

    Sure:

    10 years - back then.

    20 years - back when.

30 years - way back when.

40 years - when all this was just fields.
