1. RedWire has awesome impulse responses. Have a look here https://www.redwirez.com/bigbox.jsp and search for "Bass cabinets". They are close to the bottom of the page. Ampeg SVT 810, Hartke 4.5XL, Aquilar DB115, Ampeg B15. They captured them using various microphones. I use Earthworks TC30, which does not add any additional colour. I practise the bass going into Reaper with a compressor and these cabs.

  2.
Are there any videos/sounds samples of the MC pickups with the DFM floating around?
I have a bass with MC pickups and DFM. The preamp is very versatile, it does not have any 'signature' sound (like let's say my favorite Aguilar OBP-3). It can sound like anything what is out there. With all the preamp features, it is hard to learn and hard to master. At the end it makes you understand characteristics of classic sounds (P vs J bass, etc). But it takes quite a bit of time and patience to learn if being a guy who likes having just one knob ;)

In regards to MC pickups, they are very even sounding and responsive. In combination with stiff necks Alan makes, you get extremely fast attack and loooong sustain. It was a revelation point for me when put flats on Alan's bass. While they still sound like flats, they are not lazy due to mentioned fast attack.

I am very happy with the bass.

  3. I use Reaper with bass cabinets from RedWirez. I could not be happier.

I used to use commercial VST plugins for tube emulation, etc. but at the end I realised I don't need them for practicing, they just distract. Also, Reaper comes with powerful EQ and compressors.

    I have 2 questions to ask builders/designers.
    1) my soldering iron died yesterday. I'm fed up of buying £10 - £15 soldering irons that die after about 6 months. Can anyone recommend me a good, reasonably priced temperature controllable one please.

I find cheap soldering irons / stations completely useless for me, but than again I solder those tiny components (surface mount components). This station is simply sublime: http://uk.farnell.co...plug/dp/1740474 I think that it can be had cheaper if you contact the main UK distributor. But it is an overkill for an occasional hobbyist.

    2) does anyone use schematic software? I'm looking for some that runs on Mac OS X. Any recommendations?

You can use Diptrace: http://diptrace.com/ It is relatively simple to use comparing to others (like Eagle) and it still has advanced features if you need them.
