Wikipedia quotes

    Bass: Louis Johnson

Louis Johnson is from The Brothers Johnson

I agree that Jacko is an evil genius. Getting Eddie van Halen was a masterstroke. Just look at all the muppets on Youtube trying to do the guitar solo!

I also read somewhere that a guy from British disco band Heatwave wrote Thriller!

  2. Just had my IPOD on shuffle and 'Boogie Oogie Oogie' came on by A Taste of Honey.

The tone of the bass on that track just makes youur teeth rattle. Played by Janice M. Johnson.

Can anyone recommend anything else she played on or other female bass players worth checking out.

  3.
He's certainly one of the most mis-spelled bassists in history ;-)

But he's definitely one of the giants on whose shoulders many of us stand, and the inspiration to countless players who otherwise wouldn't have realised just how exciting bass could be. 'Bassist of the milennium' is silly, I agree. 'anything' of the milennium is, really, isn't it.

That solo in My Generation - if you could put it into words you'd want it on your gravestone.
I got slaughtered for saying The Who were overated and only had a few decent singles...but that's another story...that leads me onto to Pino I don't think was overated but everytime I hear his bass part live on My Generation...it totally underwhelms me.

  4.
I bought one a while ago as part of a costume for an 80's party :)

It is absolutely god awful- oddly I didn't even notice they were all bass amps until I got home
As a man who made several fashion faux pas in the 80's I have to say it looks like it came straight from 1987. I used to have something very similar in the 'miami vice' years.

  5. I've never seen him mentioned on any threads so I thought if anyone else was influenced by him.

Although not technically one of the best players ever, Steve Severin was one of those guys who made bass playing look cool as f**k and made me learn that instead of lead guitar.

I remember him talking about a bass he called the 'ayatollah' as it was very heavy but I can't remember what it was.

Especially liked the stuff he did on The Glove project with Robert Smith

  6. What always annoys me about the record industry is that it's way to stop piracy is not to reduce the price of cd's so there is no need to do it but to put the price up. if albums were £5 each, nobody would need to pirate anything.

Personally I'd love to see something new come along soon just like glam/punk/ new wave/house/grunge/brit pop..etc but don't think Simon Cowell will allow it :)

  7.
It never stopped!
Herby is one of the coolest guys on the planet - even playing a tuba wrapped in (mains) fairy lights...
I had a thread last year about who plays the awsome bass line on the theme tune to "Return Of The Saint" from the 1970's. You guys came up trumps and said Herbie did a lot of session work for that era and it was him..

  8.
+1 for that - could say the same for a lot of Joy Division/New Order's output but I'd add:

Joy Division - Digital, Deal Souls and Atmosphere
New Order - Age of Consent, Regret, Sunrise

    Apart from that:

Faith No More - Anne's Song, Land of Sunshine, Just a Man, King for a Day
Fishbone - Bonin in the Boneyard, Lemon Meringue
    Neville Bros. - Hercules

And of course all of Oasis' songs :)
"Bonin in the Boneyard" has to be the greatest song title ever!

  9.
Level 42's "The Pursuit of Accidents" album. Tour de four of bass playing.
I was going to say 'Standing In The Light' also by L42

Tin Drum by Japan to here Mick Karn's fretless.

Also the early Stranglers stuff and Compact Snap by The Jam for Mr Foxton

  10. Have to agree that the first three albums were great...when KID A came out it was just unlistenable rubbish.

What's the last album like?....any good?

For me The Bends is a much better album than OK Computer but it always gets voted as the best album of all time!

  11.
I'm just gutted that, from the original thread, my vote for "Twang" from Animal Kwackers didn't make it into the Lonely Sods list :)
Christ I remember them...bit like a Glam Rock Rainbow. Sadly I can still remember the theme tune 30 years later.

Here is twang in full effect

  12.
I think more of bass players when they started out, so for me The Ox I think of as sixties.
This may be heresy but I don't get The Who beyond the singles. I've tried listening to the albums but beyond a handful of singles, I don't see what the fuss was about.

    (Puts tin hat on)

  13.
If I had a guitar, Hmmmmnnnnn .............................. Hold on! I just remembered I got loads

A few extras not on that old pic now, American strat, cheapo thru neck, tele copy.

Ultimate playability goes to the Fly, But what I hanker after is relic strats.
Chapman Sticks?...now your just showing off

  14.
Just don't do what our last band used to do, which was tagging the "Sir Duke" riff onto the end of "I Wish" .
Riff now starting in Eb. :)
    Sounded good though !
Sir Duke is a nightmare...especially when it follows the horn section!.....it tends to go up to the 'dusty end' quite a lot which I was never very good at.

  15.
There's a load of songs where, IMHO the bass line makes it. Here are a few examples;

    King - Love and Pride
Ian Dury & the Blockheads - Rythym Stick
Nick Heywood - Take That Situation (Bet you'll have to look that one up!)
Moloko - Sing it Back (To prove I'm not a total eighties throwback - Have a listen)
Man, I'm an 80's anorak and even I can't remember that Nick Heywood song...lol...."Blue Hat For A Blue Day" however......

  16.
Anything from Deacon Blue - remarkable bass lines drive the whole thing along

This is just one of the classics - not rocket science - but beautifully balanced

Just found this one - go through to 2 mins 50 s - must have been themost amazing gig to play at - incredible audience participation.

I have a soft spot for Deacon Blue and this song......never really listened to the bass though
