  1. Shockwave, I have made my associations very clear In all my posts here. And many of the bass players in the UK know who I am, since I have been playing for over 35 years and toured quite a bit in the 80s and 90s. Never my intent to deceive. In this case I am curious what people think. It is an interesting amp, but the lack of on board EQ seems to bother many bass players. I am also interested in the discussion surrounding its power output.

  2. Some gratuitous pictures of me and my Retronix R-800B by J. Backlund Design. I've been gigging this since I got it in March, and man, I get more tones out of it then most basses and is light and very fast, sleek neck/

    Enjoy the pictures.

  3. Hello everyone!

I wanted to get your opinions on my newest amp, the Vivid Amps VTouch 2180 amp from a new company here in the US, Vivid Amps.

This amp is derived from a patented amp they build under their motorcycle audio company Biketronics. I played it extensively at Summer NAMM and I was blown away with how clean and pure the signal and sound was. It translated the tone knobs on my passive bass AND really passed my Hartke VXL preamp sound in an amazingly great way.

I am someone who has set his amps flat his whole career (35 years) and EQ's with my bass or a pedal preamp, so this was perfect for me.

It can be bridged with a set of bridging cables, which Vivid is manufacturing for me and sending me as well.

So, I get 180W at 4 Ohm out of two channels, or 400W bridged into 4 or 8 Ohm. For me, plenty of power for all gigs.

This thing really is tiny, you can fit it in the pocket of a gig bag.

    I would love your thoughts.

  4. Don't have one now. Like all of the rest of us banana heads, back in the '80s I had a Black Eagle, a Silver Series, a couple of Roadstars. Very nice basses, really sounded and played great. The Black Eagle was sort of like a slightly upgraded Silver series, with Burns Bison-esque looks.

Traded them all at one time or another in NYC at We Buy Guitars for other, less interesting basses over the years. Now, sadly, I wish I had most of them back.

  5. Minor. All Kubickis no matter what era, were made by Phil. Bodies were sourced by Fender and assembled at both the Fender factory and Phil's shop a few miles away. Fender FCS Kubicki basses have a 9V active circuit and four position switch knob. All the electronics and pickups were designed by Phil and the pickups were made at the same place for all years.

Major difference is in resale price. FCS versions are lower, so a steal if you can get them.

  6. Actually Danelectro basses ad their own guage running 44-79. You can still get them from LaBella (flat wound set I believe 760 FD) or you can order D'Addario XL 155 (Jerry Jones set) for six string bass and only use the bottom 4. D'Addario six string bass sets for vintage run about $10 USD so not using high b and high e doesn't matter.

I am not sure what vintage British basses used but that is what you got in the US.

  7. hamfist, you are correct, and I know Andy Fuchs and I will make sure he takes that into account as they update their tech specs.

I am curious because I have my ideas, but want to know what most others think of the two. Both boutique, and they have showrooms/factories in NJ. I'm going up that way in a week and want to have some thoughts from the Basschat crowd so when I try them out I have some things to look for that I might not have thought to look at.

  8. Chris, he moved to Colorado briefly then to New Hampshire a couple of years ago. Phil passed away in NH. Funny, because Phil and I would joke about how he spent nearly 60 years living in Southern Cali where 60 degrees is considered "bitterly cold" then moved to a state where 60 degrees is a " heat wave."

  9. I know this may not be the correct forum, but I am sad to inform you that Phil Kubicki has passed.

He was a friend, and one of the true masters of bass and guitar building. He was the kindest of souls and a great conversationalist as well.

The Ex-Factor, Factor and Key Factors were years ahead if their time, and one of the few never imitated. A tribute to his genius.

There is so much more I want to say, but my heart aches too much.

Please raise a glass to him today. Godspeed Phil, I will see you again one day.

  10. Okay, I really, really, really would love some suggestions.

I am taking my lovely wife Suzanne, and we want to have tons of fun, with bass dudes, but also not necessarily just bass hangs and the like. So, if I were to be buying you a pint, or you were to teach me how to drink the British way, where, oh where would that be Saturday and Sunday nites?

Friday nite around 11 or so we will be at Soprano's Restaurant and Piano bar in Kensington, hopefully in the basement drinking a pint and singing along to the piano player and crowd. After that, we need ideas!

    HHHHEELLLLPPP!

  11. I am coming to the bass show next week with a Brubaker Custom KXB-5, an MJXSC-4 Brute Single Cut, a JJX-4 in white w/ a custom pickguard and a JJX-5 in black w/ a custom guard. I would prefer to not come back to NJ with any of them. See them and get them at the Bass Direct stand.

Also I need some ideas for places my beautiful wife and I can hit at night. Suggestions welcome and needed!
