1.
I have got one!

the neck is sh*te though, i want to use the ibanez s its in better nick

however i have got a vintage one. (Bit of a bitsa though!)

I'l post a picture When i get home
'vintage' as in the manufacturers of that name or vintage as in it's old :|????? If it's a relic bass then I'm sure plenty on the forum will be glad to have a look.

2. Norman Watts-Roy from Ian Dury and the Blockheads

There's plenty more but when a musician's doing exactly what's asked of him in a band, especially as a bassplayer or when there's a frontperson involved you'll never know he/she's there there.

3.
Sometimes it does. Output is limited primarily by driver xmax. Where that's concerned a 150 watt Eminence Basslite S2010 will put out more than a 350 watt Kappa Pro 10. There are other pertinent factors as well, for instance the driver Qts. In the case of the S2010 versus the Kappa Pro 10 the very low Qts of the Kappa Pro chokes off its response over an octave higher than the S2010. In most cases drivers with very high power ratings are accompanied with low Qts values, so if you buy a cab with a very high power rating in the quest for more bass output the opposite may be the result. :)
Sorry but "Qts." ?? I suppose (this may sound very thick here but I'm trying my best not to) 'response' as you put it is how well the speaker amplifies and re-produces frequencies created by the guitar.......

You really seem to know your stuff when it comes to speakers Bob. Thanx for sharing. I'm guessing you're in the trade then?? Or used to be. Could you please comment on speaker area as I'm sure that more sound is usually thrown out of a cabinet (or set of cabinets) with a large speaker area than one with small area. as in a 8x10" cab on it's own has 80" speaker area and a 2x10 paired with a 1x15 has 35" speaker area, unless I'm missing some very basic math here.

I'm genuinely learning stuff here by the way, so please continue, this is useful stuff.

4. Hello again, I just can't keep away I'm afraid, you're all so helpful (Y)

Still on a mission to buy new cabs. I AM going to get a 5 string after this setup is all payed for so I thought I'd find it really useful and many others would aswell if there was some sort of a checklist of things to check out for and keep in mind when you're buying cabs with a low B or even a high C (or both!) string in mind. Kind of like the topic with what to be checking in second hand gear that's here somwhere.

Things i think should be adressed if anyone feels like contributing to people who are complete greenhorns to added stringness were

freq. range (is it a made up number??)
ports on a cabinet, how many and they're layout on the amplifier
output of speakers accross the range
loss of frequencies and the causes
loss of clarity/distortion
good cabinet combinations
manufacturers who stand out
price you're looking at
tweeters/horns etc
sub-woofers (?)
different speaker use according to acoustics
footprint on stage/weight/portability
performance of cabs in a band setting VS solo bass

I have no idea if this will catch on but I'd find it really usefull to know more about what I should be looking for in cabs when I've got 'extended bass' in mind.

Thanx a lot everyone,

FB

5. Thanks for that Bill.

Just one thing, to get the best performance possible out of a bass cabinet and amplifier, should the power handling be as close to, if not over what the amp's able to shed out. If I've understood correctly this should keep the speakers a decent distance away from it's maximum travel limit.

Have I got this correctly?

6. Hello everyone,

I've started to doubt what I've always believed about power handling and stuff, nothing wrong with being corrected when it's needed.

My beef is about power handling and my paranoia about blowing my brank-spank new speakers (once I get them of course...it's always the way).

I always thought that each cabinet in a multi-cab setup had to have a 'power handling RMS' higher than the amplifier its self. An example would be a head of 500watts being used to power one 15" cab speaker that's got a handling of 400watts and a 2x10" that has a handling of 300watts. In my head that wouldn't be wise as the speakers in both cabinets would be getting pushed really hard. I'm half expecting someone to point out that the load from the amplifier is spread out between each individual speaker but i really need someone to TELL ME THIS so I know for sure.
(i know the impedence things btw so in this scenario we'll take it the amps are all wired correctly for their impedence etc)

Could someone clarify this for me and please tell me exactly what the deal is if I really have got it wrong. It'd be sh*t to get new gear then have to go have it checked out really quickly due to me not setitng them up correctly.

Cheers guys 'n' gulls,

FB.

P.S. I'm getting a topic running to inquire about smaller cabinets for 5 string basses so I'd much appreciate it if you dropped a word in.

7. I've been massively drawn in by Warmoth's Website recently and have been having massive GAS for buying main components such as the body and neck (routed and painted by Warmoth themselves) then completing the project over here in the UK. I was goign to get a J bass body and neck then buying hardware seperately and asking Shuker to asemble and then set-up the bass for me, prehaps getitng me some decent pups while i'm at it.

Can anyone share anything about Warmoth components, good OR bad?
Is this the best route to go if there isn't quite enough money to get a full custom bass but when u want something more than bog-standard fender?

I'm suprised there's not a Warmoth topic already, if there is (I did search the relevant forums but didn't find anything) then I'm sorry and this can be deleted. I think a wee li'l' bank of information about Warmoth's products would be very useful for BCers so please TYPE AWAY!!

Thanx a lot,

Ben.

8. I played through an all Ashdown rig today, a 12" on the floor and 4x10" with an EVO II head. really really boomy, couldn't get any mids from it for the punch I like, it was extreme clicky grindy trebel or rediculous 'I can't even make the notes out' bass. And a silly freq. select setup doesn't help with trying to dial in 'your' sound either. I'll never buy one after that experience. Only good thing was that it was loud enough for the rehersal and cut through with a nice amount of headroom.

9.
Thanks Mikey - yes it is a hard habit to adapt from - but I still do 95% of all my playing with 2 fingers and that is hard enough to get smooth and consistant and grooving - however it's nice to expand your technique a bit after a few years - I've been playing for 23 years and I'm still working on stuff eveyday just to be consistent.

One NEW thing I did this weekend was start checking out the Southern Indian rhythm system of Konnakol - performed with the voice. I got a video with John McLaughlin demo-ing it - see http://www.konnakol.org/ for more. It's absolutely brilliant - so simple yet can create amazing complex sub-divisions of beats. All without drums.

Link to the McLaughlin video:
http://www.abstractlogix.com/features_view.php?idno=22

Anyway I started playing those rhythms with 4 fingers and got in creating accents on the 1 of groups of 2, 3 and 4 - and did this with the metronome - and within an hour or so I was coming up with new stuff. So I'm going to keep at this - trying to keep it musical and very much in time and use it to sub-divide grooves, melodic ideas and chords into different time feels - the long and the short of that being that overall my timing started to improve immediately...

Damn there's so much to learn.

Thanks for the feed(backing)

Mike
The technique in the video makes me think of victor wooten but instead of a more thru-string slapping technique with the thumb you seem to utilise more of a stroke. You've naield the techinque though btw.

Konnakol is something i've been entranced by very recently as I've always found it hard to coutn say a bar of 4 while letting my hands move independantly in groups of anything but 4 (3,5,7 etc). I'd highly advise you go to http://www.bassplayer.tv then click on artist features and watch kai eckhardt's videos where he demonstrates his use of konnakol. Really inspiring and overwellming to me anyway. Rather similar technique to yours actually. Thanx for the ideos.

10. Yo yo yo. I'm going to stop going on about large speakers after this topic I promise!

I'm looking to buy a new 18" speaker to put in an old cabinet i've aquired and have come across some issues that i'd much appreciate having cleared up by members of this fantastic forum.

The first thing I came across is Frequency Response/Range in speakers. In 18" speakers there seems to be a huge range from one manufactured to another of the frequency range their speakers have. Fane's 18XB having a range from 27Hz to 1kHz and on the other hand Precision Devices' PDN.18SB40 has a huge range from 40Hz to 3.5kHz. My thought is that any frequency below 40Hz is pretty much useless due to me being a 4 string player and that a large range is good so that it's not just really low bass that's coming from the 18" cabinet. Can someone help on this??

While I'm here I'll ask about Neodymium speakers (due to the PDN.18SB40 being neodymium). Are there any flaws to having a large neodymium speaker? My initial thoughts were great as an 18" is big enough without having to break your back getting it off the floor but then it crossed my mind that large speakers need to be weighed down somehow due to the power and freq.s they pump out....

Another thing that baffled me in the search for speakers on bluearan was what exactly a subwoofer is. I've always associated subwoofers with pa systems etc but it never crossed my mind if a speaker labeled 'subwoofer' could be used in the same way a guitar/bass speaker can. I shouldn't really think there's a problem with using pa equipement anyway as i know there's some people on the forum who do just that for a hi-fi sounding rig. Is subwoofer just a fancy name for a speaker for low frequency application??

If anyone has absolutely any muses about 18" speakers to share pelase do as i'd much appreciate all the info I can get. I haven't had much response in other topics so i'm still a bit overwelmed. Anything at all...honestly....Thanx a lot everyone,

11.
irony id dead long live sarcasm....? :)

horses for courses mate, see it year in year out with my job....this year students appear to be falling for 450 watt berhinger bass heads and 4x10 cabs............
Oh dear god. Tell them they can't come in unless they promise to not buy anything with the dreaded 'b' word on front.

I had a 450watt B*******r and it decided to kill itself from the inside out.

I've never liked amp modeling and that stuff, gimme a good ol' amp with turny knobs, no parametric EQ and a back panel you can fry eggs on any day.

12. Hello everyone.

In the middle of clearing out my stuff to make way for a new bass amp setup so up for sale in this forum is a AXL Player Deluxe Fretless jazz bass. It's lined, equiped with some ok flatwounds that have barely been used. One tiny dink to the body that's barely noticeable. Really smooth neck, light bass overall, well balanced. Passive electronics all in good nick inside.

I'm based in North wales. There's a Fender bass box here ready to be packed with padding and have the bass body and neck put in seperately then sent via courier to your doorstep. No trades please and only serious offers, I really need a quick sale. PICS :

Cheers.

Ben.

15. I have massive issues with the drummer of a band I play in ("drummers being tits?" I hear you cry but yes folks, drummers aren't very nice a lot of the time) and think he needs someone to teach him a lesson and have considered leaving the band all together in an attempt to make him realise how much of a nob end he is most of the time. I've decided to be the bigger man in the end and stick with it, i'm only there for the experience and due to me being friends with the other members of the band now.

Be the bigger man I say, he may be a bit smug and think he gets away with everything but in the end as a session player you're going to have to put up with that from time to time and for doing just that, you're the better person I say. Good luck with it all (Y)
