    What kind of batteries are you using? Alkaline batteries or zinc chlorides won't last long - even some of the premium brands. And some rechargeable batteries just aren't worth the effort after they get past a certain age. You could try lithium batteries - they're not cheap, but do tend to last longer for this kind of thing.

    Stuff depreciates, but money does too. And there are so many other factors - vintage value, availability, modding etc.

    You might have bought a P Bass in 1962 for £79 and thruppence-tuppence h'apenny but that doesn't mean selling it for less. A MIM Jazz bought last year probably won't go for more. Some new Jaydee custom basses have an 18 month waiting list, so they probably will go for more. Other stuff can be improved (or indeed wrecked) by modding.

    I guess you win some, you lose some. I once bought a Fender Rhodes eleccy piano for £100, and sold it a year later for £200. I also bought a Trace Elliot Series 6 full stack a few years back for £600, and sold it for a disappointing £250 on fleaBay. I subsequently bought an American Ampeg SVT half stack for £450 from the same place, and shifted it for more when I sold it recently.

    I guess it's all down to market forces. We've all known on BC how certain brands can fall in and out of love...

    This may be true of iOS devices (iPhones & iPads), since all apps indeed have to be approved by Apple. However the [i]Mac[/i] OS is an open system in the same way as Windows. You can run whatever you like on them (or whatever is available from the developer community.)

    Additionally, using either Bootcamp or Parallels, they can be configured to run Windows too. MiltyG565 started a thread on this here:

    To Mac or not to Mac?

    I'd certainly go for a Mac. This plus Logic has had a transformational effect for me. Just check that the model you look at has the right inputs for you. Lately Apple has been doing away with audio inputs and Firewire in favour of USB 3 and Thunderbolt. No bad thing, but if you're old school like me...

    I've had a Mex Jazz for several years, but recently bought a Jap P 'cos I wanted one. A combination of underpowered pickup and a fat neck on the P sent me pretty quickly back to the Jazz. I know this won't be everyone's experience, but I personally can't fault the Mex Jazz which has been a loyal servant for many years. I know that a lot of people switch out the pickup on their P, but I personally can't be arsed, having only recently bought the P. The J however is always ready to offer full-range tones - given sympathetic amp EQ settings, of course. Low mids on the amp EQ can often speak volumes...

    What to Sacrifice, Cab or Head?

    I'm quite a fan of GK, and recently bought an MB212-II combo, reviewed here:

    There are pluses and minuses. On the good side, it's stupidly light at 41 lbs, and delivers all 500W to the internal speakers without need for an extension cab. On the bad side, GK don't seem to be renowned for their reliability, and I had to send mine back - twice - before getting number three delivered a couple of days ago.

    You can still get the series 1 models at £450, which is what I went for in the end. I'm in West Bromwich if you want to give it a whirl. PM me.
