  1. At least hearing from a few other people gives me more confidence it won't be awful, haha. They seem to be fairly established in the guitar market (for a small company at least), but there is little info on the basses in this country. Going to be getting a tax rebate in the next month, and am looking to put it into a 5 string that I'll actually want to play.

To be fair, I wouldn't think anyone would expect your average pub covers band to get any attention whatsoever from the audience.

Indeed, the idea of demonstrating one's respect for the band by maintaining a studious silence is a relatively recent thing in popular music. In the old days notionally 'seated' music hall audiences stamped their feet, sang along, interrupted and threw peanuts at the band, much as did the 'groundlings' in Shakespeare's theatre. In dance halls or at balls the participants (and I use the term advisedly) paid scant attention to the musicians, being far more interested in their dance partners than the - by comparison - hideous nicotine stained geriatrics on the bandstand hired to provide a musical back-drop.

Personally, I find it disturbingly unnatural to have a bunch of beady-eyed punters maintain a hushed, respectful silence during my performances. Good job it's only happened once and lasted about four seconds. And it may have been a silence born of shock or revulsion rather than respect but let's not split hairs.

Not sure anyone here is asking for silence or just standing there, staring. Singing along, cheering, clapping, jumping around would all be perfectly good things to do at most gigs, as you are engaging with the band, and showing interest in their efforts. Being stood around with your back to the stage, chatting to your mates, or checking facebook is very obviously not showing an interest.

Assuming that they are half decent and have a modicum of stage presence, then why not??

Likely depends on the kind of pub etc, I'll grant you. But would it be a fair assumption that not everyone in a pub would necessarily be there specifically to see that band?

For myself, I believe that talking through a band is a matter of context and degree.

It's one thing if it's a willowy, ethereal lady folk singer singing a mawkish ballad about The Land of The Faerie Queene while tearfully accompanying herself on an un-amplified autoharp in a folk club. Silence is mandatory, lest one be assaulted by some ghastly old hippy in Jesus boots.

Quite another if it's four hairy-4rsed blokes hammering out Sex On Fire at full beans in a boozer. Frankly, they just have to take their chances

  5. I've been to 6-10 metal type gigs over the last couple of months, and it is a wide-spread problem. It's far worse for the support acts than the main bands, but it does still happen during the main bands. I may not particularly like any given support band, but I feel like it is common decency to give them my attention for the 20-30 mins they have on stage (I've even been surprised a few times by some cracking bands).

Anyone who talks through a main band should just be sat at home with their mates, with the band's album on the stereo, lol. Also, I hope there is a special circle of hell reserved for anyone who thinks recording gigs on their phones is acceptable behaviour.

  6. Just seen an ad for the Alpha 5, which looks stunning. I've looked at some demos of the 4 string version online and it sounds pretty nice too.

Assuming I don't pre-order (which seems to end in 2 days), the bass will cost $999 + shipping + customs fees, which will likely end up around £1000. I'm not a huge fan of the idea of dropping a grand on something I can't see or play beforehand, especially with it being a purchase from overseas.

From what I can tell, they are a fairly small brand, but was just wondering if anyone knew of anywhere in this country that is a Jericho stockist?

  7. It's my pleasure to start a feedback thread for Matt.

He just bought my P bass off me, excellent comms and a lovely guy. Came over, tried the bass and sorted out a bank transfer.

Top guy to deal with, buy and sell with confidence! :)

  8. Selling my 2012 US Fender P bass. Bass has been heavily used both at home and in bands, so it has a few marks, but is still in good condition. I'll save you all the usual spiel about these basses, since most people know what they are and what they do.

It is currently strung with D'addario Chromes and comes with the original hardcase.

Collection from Faringdon, or can meet within a reasonable distance.
