1. Well, I'm pleased to say, the new strings did the trick. In mad panic I went for the Cobalts and now I think they are uberbright!! Hahahaha But knowing them, they will dull down in a short while. Now I need to get used to the bass and find my tone... or tones, we'll see. Lots of buttons to press!!
2.
Playing devils advocate though, did you not wonder why a special run like a 25th Anniversary has not sold from new in 5 years?
Yup, I have ... got it from a small, disorganised looking store in the middle of nowhere in Canada. But yes, it still makes you question. Especially considering it was also rather cheap. It is not batteries, tested both and both full. Praying it's the strings - new Cobalts on their way, if they don't help, nothing will... will update you all on Thursday.
3. Yeah. I did test couple of these before, but haven't played the one i bought ... so guess there's a risk there, yes. Not sure what you refer to when you say 'thrown together' ...
4. I haven't had 9V batteries leak, but had to throw away my sons favourite remote car cos Duracells (3 out of 5) leaked all over and corroded the whole thing. They weren't even that old. And a week before had the same issue with the alarm clock, though I managed to save the clock - I'd prefer to have not saved it, frankly, it just wakes me up every day! ... should probably pay attention not to by Duracells made in Romania or wherever they make them for the eastern Europe market (apologies to all my Romanian neighbors - I'm sure Serbian batteries are not any better, as a matter of fact, we can't even make them)
5.

So I have an eye (or two) to look at the sheet music, for example.... depending on what I'm playing, I use sheet music, or even just chords on the iPhone/iPad ... kinda difficult to look at both at the same time
6. Hiss is only there when I crank up the highs on the eq. Passive mode switches the eq off. This MM takes two batteries as it turns out. Have replaced one, need to go buy another one today.
7. Erm dude in the shop said he'll put the new batteries in (cos they'd leaked by now if they sat in the bass for 5 years), but I shall check that. Changing settings on the bass (series, parallels, pup config etc) makes a difference to the tone, but it still has no high frequencies at all. Even boosting them on eq does little. Adds hiss when pushed to the max, but there just isn't any clarity ... hope it's just the strings.
8. Hey guys, I've bought a brand new (old new stock they call it) MM 25th Anniversary double humbucker bass. Was super excited to get it from the states ... rushed home to plug it in... and then disaster! Its as dull as old newspapers! Tried all the different combos on the bass, tried two different rigs... just can't get any decent tone out of it. Have called MM factory to check the serial number to see if it's truly new and genuine. All matches up. The bass was completed late 2009 and has apparently sat somewhere in the stores ever since. So my first thought (and the dudes in the factory too) was get the strings replaced! New strings now on the way, but was wondering if you guys have any other suggestions as to what to check for causing this issue ... cos the bass is a total beauty and I just want to play it!!!!
9. well this topic made me feel a bit better about wanting to put the stickers on my upright ... hahaha Played Stagg for a couple years now and that comes with some of the frets marked. Though they are all a bit off, I got used to it completely that the fact they were all half a finger too far down didn't bother me at all. Now jumped on the Yamaha with no markers, oh my goodness!!!! lol
10. Bracknell, Berkshire or Central London (where I work) ... sorry for a late reply, have changed my email address on here and notifications don't seem to come as quick as I'd like them to. Think I fixed it now
11. Thanks bud, you are right ... thought I added it to my signature, but turns out I haven't. Editing now!
12. Agree with Alun ... have a Stagg (hopefully not for much longer) and when bowing it gains a lot of volume, but can be made to sound nice. The Yamaha SLB though sounds much better a lot easier ... it does cost 8x more, so you get what you pay for!
13. NOW SOLD!!! Please remove! My first EUB is now on sale. It's been great having it. First bought it 2-3 years ago as an experiment to see how I was gonna get on with moving to upright. Saw a few dudes here discussing them so I thought, if I don't like it I'll just sell it right away... but I did like it and it's been in my care since new for couple years now. It's not a perfect replica of a double bass - no EUB is, apart from maybe Yamaha SLB but it is absolutely great starter instrument. I've looked after mine well, but it has been used relatively regularly. It's got a bit of a chip around the hole for one of the arm rests - just from taking the rest in and out. I've also had to replace two of the screws on one of the tuning machines as the original ones started looking a bit sorry for themselves once I put the new (pro grade, acoustic bass) strings. These strings are just over 6 months old... can find out on Amazon the brand, it escapes me at the moment. I play in a small local jazz band, so Stagg's been out with me a few times. But we don't gig often, so mainly home and rehearsal use with 20 gigs over its life time. If you'd like to come see/try, do let me know. I'm in Bracknell, Berkshire or more and less every day in central London (for work). Happy to meet up anyone who's interested! Bass comes with the original gig bag. Got a bit of a whole where the foot's been trying to poke out, but other than that, in perfectly working order. Some pics uploaded. Any questions, please ask. 14. Sale value: £[s]670[/s] now £550 + free shipping! For sale my lovely EBS TD650 amp. Comes in a Gator case. It's generally a great amp with lots of tone flexibility. I run it through Epifani 2x10 cab or a EBS 4x10 (if I can be bothered carrying it) and with both cabs it sounds great. Plenty of power, tube option, drive, multiple outputs, mute button - anything you can think of. Have played a few different basses through it too, including uprights, and I could always get a good tone out of it. I am not a pro and don't gig for a living. Have had it with me on the odd occasion when I did do gigs, but as it never leaves the case, it's in a great condition. Have also replaced the tube few months back - just for fun more than anything else. Due to it's size it's best if buyer can collect, but can probably post it too at extra cost. I'm in Berkshire, sunny Bracknell to be more specific! You can swing by and try the amp at any stage there, or I can meet you up in London (work in central London) if that suits better! Some pics below. Any questions, just fire them to me!
15. might be worth putting that in the title or description... or, i suspect, you'll be here answering same questions again and again

17. Mmmm I read a lot on the sticky post here on the forum about people's impression of different stringing ... I never tried running it bridge only on my bass cos it always worked well through body. And the EB cobalt strings are by far the best strings I had on my Fender, so don't think it's making them sound dull ... just possibly kinking them too much!
18. They are a bit pointy, each saddle has 2-3 grooves. Got the new string from the supplier, but am a bit scared to bust it again ... they are not cheap and I doubt they'll send me another one if this was goes.
19. Bought new set of strings few weeks back, EB Slinky Cobalt and swapped them for the same gauge Slinkies I had on the bass ... Fender Jazz Standard. Run them through-body just like the old ones. Used them once or twice in a rehearsal, playing jazzy stuff ... next time I opened the case, the B string had a nice little stretch right where it bends over the bridge. Needless to say it was gone ... ... my old set lasted me 2 years without any issues. Am I doing something wrong? Should I just run them the normal way and forget about the through body business?? Is a bit weird as all the strings I ever had on that bass went through-body ... and I had the bass for 5-6 years now. Any advice is welcome!
20. Got my serial verified by the MM customer service. Have to say they were super quick.... and it is 2002, and the description given by them fits what I've got in hand. That's a positive thing.
21. Oh, good good. As I said, I don't play often enough it would seem! Right, off to the shop ....
22. @NJE thanks for the link! My serial is not registered, but following the logic that they released serials in some sort of order, it would seem the bass dates to 2002. Now I'm even more sure that the previous owner hasn't spent much time looking after it! But I can also assume (or almost be sure) what electronics it's got, which is good. @all Thanks for good recommendations so far ... I played slinkies already on other basses. They do sound good to start with, but when they go dull, they are really dull!! I am yet to see how long the cobalt ones last - apparently they are meant to be better. I also have to say that the steal strings seem to go through my fingers like through butter ... I know I know, I probably don't play enough ... not sure if it is the material, or what. But I do tend to avoid them these days! By the way, Has any of you ever come across a bass which for some reason had a neck different shade to the headstock? What I mean is that it is rather clear that the neck is darker polish or even wood, then the headstock. At first I thought it might be just dirty hands effect, but the more I look at it the more it seems like someone rubbed some polish off it. That said, I don't think it has, but it looks that way. Would anyone do that for some sort of weird 'performance' reasons? Or do I just give it a good scrub?
23. hi all I just got meself a StingRay 5 ... not in the best of conditions ... no idea what age, but at a guess late nineties (if anyone knows how to check this, please let me know. More importantly, the strings on it are shot! The whole bass needs a very good clean and a fresh setup. So, I thought I'd ask a few of you more experienced MM owners, what shall I get in terms of strings? Now, I've already got an American Jazz Standard, which I love dearly... recently I chucked on MM cobalt slinky strings, and they are great. So do I go for the same ones on the StingRay or do I go something else? I'm after a nice thick bassy sound, with a some of musicman zest. I wouldn't say aggressive tone, just nice and rich bass. I find my J doesn't do that well at really low grrr kind of sound ... ... so open for suggestions!!
