There seems to be two main components to these contraptions - a wooden board and foam. Is the board necessary from an acoustic POV? Or is it just there to create a solid platform?
I have a piece of very dense foam about 2” thick that I sometimes use under my bass cabs (2x Aguilar DB112s). It’s just the right size to fit between the feet of the cab. I’m wondering, if I glued a larger piece of carpeted plywood to it, so the cab’s feet sit on top of it, would it perform better sonically?

Confused now, was it your valve amp that had dry joints because that is 1 million times more likely than both basses having them due to the heat?
No, it was my basses, as unlikely as it seems!

Dry joints are a defect of manufacturing and occur within the cooling time of the solder, they can't be made afterwards due to heat. A dry joint can function and then fail later on for many reasons, heat / vibration / general stress, etc, but that would be just a side effect of an always defective connection. So in a way, its lucky it failed now due to the heat and not on a stage!
Ah, okay. So the solder joints must’ve been dry all along and the heat made them fail. Gotcha! 😁

The solder didn’t melt. The heat caused ‘dry’ joints. Apparently this is quite common in Fender valve amps - the heat from the valves can make the solder joints dry. Maybe it’s down to poor quality solder and/or solder joints from Fender 🤷♂️

Tonight: Protect the Beat (I’m doing the sound so this doesn’t really count)
Two gigs next week:
Roy Ayers at Chinnery’s, Southend on Wednesday and Mulatu Astatke at KOKO on Thursday.

Update… both basses have been fixed! 😃 The heat had cooked the solder attaching the wires to the pick-ups.
BTW, I took them into Strings Direct which is just a stones throw from where I work in Southend-On-Sea. Chris Ward (from The Bass Centre) has a work shop there that he works from one day per week. Highly recommended.
Thanks for the input, guys. 😊

I'm taking them to my local tech tomorrow. Hopefully he'll be able to fix them.

I have a lead that only works on certain basses of mine. Weird as it looks exactly the same as the rest?
That is odd! I've tried all sorts of leads into all sorts of amps and it's definitely the basses that have bust.

Hmm, I wondering if they’re shorting to ground somewhere, on some shielding perhaps?
Would that kill the output too?

Wire or link the pup hot direct to the socket ...By pass the controls? Fingers crossed its a pot and not pup...
You’ve obviously never seen me use a soldering iron… 😝

Silly question but have you double checked the lead, only I had this a while back and it was a loose Jack plug 🙂
Not a silly question. Yes, tried multiple leads through two different amps. 🤔

As you say could be the heat has got to 8t, maybe expanded the pot, no longer making contact... and not the pickup windings? Both Passive i presume not the heat got to a battery.
Move em away... bit of luck and fingers crossed all will be fine later... mine are in a rack by the patio window, curtain drawn, not a lot else can be done, no more room...
Yeah, both passive. I’ve moved them to the coolest room in the house. Fingers crossed 🤞

UPDATE:
They are not completely dead. If I crank the volume on my amp to the max I can just about hear some signal coming through. Also, if I touch one of the pole pieces it buzzes loudly. This is the same on both basses.

Got a multimeter?
Stick a lead in and measure continuity and/or resistance between tip n sleeve.
Does it change when ya turn the vol pot...
I have a voltage tester but not a multimeter 😕

Plugged in my American Original P - nothing, dead as door nail. Tried my American Standard- same. My Jazz is fine though.
All three basses are on the same rack stand in my music room which gets really hot, especially with this heat wave. They might have been in direct sunlight for a while too.
I’ve opened them up and, although I’m no expert when it comes to electronics and wiring, everything looks intact.
Anyone experienced anything similar?

I have a P bass with the original p bass pickup by fender Model #: 0992046000
it sounds awesome, so worth considering too IMO (it's also cheaper)
I’ve been contemplating this pickup. I saw this post and immediately ordered one!

From what I’ve read the 63 has a lot more in the lows and not so many highs in comparison.
I have both pickups and would agree with this. They are in two different basses though so there will be other factors influencing the tone. 62 in an old American Standard and the 63 in an American Original.

Joe bought a jazz bass from me. Easy transaction. Great to deal with. Excellent communication. Thanks, Joe!

Would you perhaps consider sharing the gig diary with another bass player?
I would consider helping as I dep in a Ska band anyway, but my worry is that my diary is quite full already and would clash with your bands dates if I did it full time.
I suppose it depends on what 'lots of gigs in the diary' means and whether you would rather just leave altogether so they can find a full time replacement.
The bandleader would really prefer a regular full-time lineup with me depping only occasionally. I would prefer that too, TBH. I'll PM you the gig list anyway though if you're curious. See what you think.

Up for sale is this beautiful 1966 reissue Jazz Bass in olympic white with matching headstock. Only 132 of these were made for export so they can be hard to come by.
Upgrades:
1. Gotoh lollipop tuners for that true '66 vibe (original clovers included)
2. Genuine Fender USA pickguard - I prefer red tortoiseshell over brown (original brown included)
3. I buffed the back of the neck to a satin finish - so smooth!
There are a couple of dings, some buckle rash and the finish has cracked slightly around the neck bolts. It plays beautifully and I'm sure I'll regret selling it but needs must.
Comes with a Thomann hard case which is in VGC.
Buyer collects or pays postage or meet halfway within a reasonable distance.

Looking for a bassist to replace me in a 6-piece band (drums, bass, guitar, keys, sax, vocals).
Lots of gigs in the diary for 2022 with more on the way. Mostly in Kent and SE London but a few further afield too.
Own gear and transport is essential.
Experience and knowledge of the genre is also important.
We don't rehearse that often but when we do it's in Dartford.
The guys in the band are all good players and are really nice people. The reason I'm leaving is because I don't want to gig as much as they do. Shame because it's a fun band.
*edit - mainly covers but there are a couple of originals in the set.
PM me and I’ll put you in touch with the drummer - he is ‘head of recruitment’ 😄.
Cheers,
Ray
