1. I currently have a Fender P bass but would like a new sound. Would a FX box be able to give me a Music Man sound? i.e Chic or would I need a new bass which is out of the question for the time being.

    Thanks

    Gareth

  2. I've tried working out this rift from a song which is very repetitive but very groovy and catchy but I must be tone deaf i am struggling big time :) , I cant seem to get the knack of it but it is my first attempt. I was wondering if anyone could help me out and work it out for me thanks :)

    The song starts about 1min15sec

  3. What the best and CHEAPEST way to listen to a recording say on CD and play along with it BUT listening to both through my headphones.

I have got a old mixer I used to use in my DJing days. Its a mixer which use with decks if that helps. I've tried running my bass through the microphone input and getting some leads that go from microphone input to red and white outputs (sorry cant remember the correct terms so I'll just explain what they look like) but cant seem to hear either. Whould i have to use a studio type mixer to give my bass more power for the DJ mixer to hear it so to speak (my bass is passive).

Would the cheapest option be to buy a programe for my Laptop which will be able to do this?

  4. I've been having lessons since about March. First I worked on some 12 bar blues, octive playing and some then for a month or so a finger fitness programe. I have just finished learning Deep Purple - Black Night and I'm starting on Rose royce - Car Wash. I enjoyed the finger fitness programe but if Im honest it was a bit borring at times but had to be done. Finally it feels like Im getting somewhere.

  5. I've just bought my first, what I would call expensive bass. A Fender 'P' Bass MIJ 1995. I used to have a 'Black' bass only cost £80 off the shelf and when I used to play about 10 years ago a Encore. So compared to my previous bass it is a major upgrade. I cant stop playing it. I finally know what people mean when they say a bass feels right.

Anyway Do most people get an extra amount of enthusiasm from obtaining a new bass? there again it might be becuase I've nearly nailed my first song this time around.

  6. Im about to buy my first semi expensive bass. Im currently using a cheap 'Black' bass which I bought for £80 bargin but time for a upgrade. I've tried a few and feel that a Fender P bass japanese 1995 for £495 and wondering will it keep its value well?

  7.
Nobody is really better than anybody else. Sure, some guys are technically better than others (which usually means they can play more difficult things, or possibly more subtle, nuanced things) but in the end it all comes down to taste and context. Mark King is the best at being Mark King, and Flea the best at being Flea. Each is the best in their respective bands. Thats all you can really say.
You couldn't ask for a better answer

  8. I was on the bus the other day and heard some college kids talking about they'er favourite bass player and they were taking about Flea. Saying he was one the best. I dont hear many younger people talk about Mark King. Would you consider him equal or better than flea? I prefer Mark King.

I know they are young but when I was younger I heard of B Edwards and B Collins.

  9. Im gonna get stright to the point. Im about to get medicaly discharged from the Navy and will get a certian amount of resettlement allowences. I want to use my resettlement grant on my bass lessons, the only draw back being the grants can only be used on a course that is Level 3 or above i.e Nvq level 3, Higher education.

At what level would be equivilent to a level 3? :) If indeed you could translate Rock School Graded Syllabus to a level such as more well known forms of Educationl accreditation.

    Thanks

  10. I just started plyaing again a few months back and am on the lookout for some new inspiration. Im currently listening alot to chic. Does anyone know of any bands that have/did have a simliar sound to Bernard Edwards?

I also like quite a lot of other stuff, just like everyone else, like Marc King etc but cant get enought of Chic/Sister Sledge.

  11. I currently have a entry level bass which cost £120 with a Amp bargin but I think a upgrade is in order. £200 is my budget. My teacher knows where I can pick up a 2nd hand Peavey Grind Bass but has also pointed out a Yamaha RBX170 from a local shop. Both are the same price. Which one is generally best value for money? Plyaing Funk, Slap?

  12. I've had a few lessons and in my last lesson I was asked to learn some 12 bar blues. I learnt them off by heart and thought my fingering was correct but my teacher corrected me and showed me the correct fingering then I tried to play the riff with the new fingering and I really strugled but could play with it before. My teacher said I've got muscle memory that why I strugled. Is muscle memory good or bad?

  13. I have seen a EB3 for around £200. I must have been wrongly informed I thought a gibson was good for funk. My mistake im still learning and niave. I will keep an eye out for a copy of a fender jazz or a music man. Which copies are the best?

  14. I currenlty have a entry level bass called a 'Black' it only cost £80 with a amp good value. In a few months time I will buy a better bass. my price range is about 180 to 250. I know buying a bass is all about the sound of the individual bass the type of wood and feel etc. I like funky stuff, slap and bass lines like chic.

Has anyone heard how good a epiphone is? how long they last? Much value for money? Or are there better copies out there?
