    Fitting a new Double bass bridge

    I'm thinking of lowering the action on mine, kind of nervous about going too far though (it's a bridge I had fitted new last year when I was in Bristol, too far to go back just for an adjustment). I guess I can follow the existing profile and sand carefully down to match but that kind of fine adjustment is pushing my woodworking skills a little... has anyone on BC done this themselves?

    Just remember that with 99.9% of couriers, if it isn't double-boxed, the insurance you paid for isn't valid (they'll take your money and assume you read the notes on packaging). A hard case counts as one of the boxes, a soft case doesn't. And even then check the small print as some carriers explicitly exclude musical instruments...

    TO GO: Warwick Corvette strings

    Here's a set of (4) roundwound strings from a Corvette I used to own - according to the guy I bought the bass from they were the original strings (new in '09) so I guess they are whatever brand Warwick fit to their basses.

    These have been trimmed to fit a Corvette and have had very little play as I took them straight off, anyone's for £2.50 postage.

    Shame, I used to live in Chagford about 10 years back and quite like it. Still go down that way every now and again.There's a great folk music scene round those parts.

    Know of any nice cottages to rent down there? :)

    +1000. If anyone doesn't understand this, then please unplug your amplifer from the mains (that's what comes out of the square white plastic thing on the wall) and book in to your local college for an "electric appliances for beginners" course.

    DC can't alternate. If it does, it's AC.

    There's a clue in them there abbreviations:

    DC = Direct Current
    AC - Alternating Current

    Wiggly volts (even square wave) are always AC. DC is a straight line.

    It kind of depends on the amount of DC, as DC can of course refer to any amount of current or voltage. But then you all knew that as you all know electronics. 9VDC at some milliamperage won't hurt a speaker and is fine for testing. 30VDC+ at 3 or 4 amps will fry the coil and bend the cone as it will make it stand out like, well, a standy-out thing.

    Ok I picked this up recently and actually like it but it's not quite what I want so probably for sale at £100 including postage unless you fancy collecting from Bideford in which case you can have it for £95.

    In full working order, excellent condition, in the original box with UK psu and manual.

    If the bass is sound, it is well worth having a new bridge fitted and the snapped string replaced. Those old eastern European ply student basses are a world apart from what comes out of China these days. Don't chop it up! If you want to shift it as it is, feel free to PM me with a price as we're not too far apart...

    Bass Solo. Should You and How to ?

    I don't do bass solos myself, but being someone who finds almost all soloing excessively tedious (especially my own on any instrument) that's hardly surprising.

    I'll even go out on a limb and say that the vast majority of musicians (no matter what their instrument) who improvise solos, shouldn't.

    I would much rather listen to an expressive and well-rehearsed interpretation of a great piece of music than to someone try to show off their chops or get all emotional with a blues solo. The counter to that of course is Stevie Ray's superb interpretation of Hendrix' (improvised) Voodoo Chile... think I lost track of that argument somewhere there...

    Decent bow for EUB?

    I was with a fiddle player who was trying bows out last year... after trying what seemed like dozens she came down to two and chose one for $400. I could hear the difference between that and the other ones for sure including when I played it myself (I play violin to a really ropey standard), but for 400 bucks she got a really nice vintage violin bow. Not sure I'm seeing the same value for money with bass bows in the UK!

    Portable EUB combo

    Actually my main amp is an SWR Electric Blue head (the original - apparently now "collectible" if Ebay is to be believed - model) through either a 1x12 or a 1x10+1x12 cab.

    But anyway have now ordered the EBS combo so hopefully the portable leave-in-the-car need is sorted.
