I can attest this is a solid bass - I bought mine 20ish years ago at university having never played bass before. It sat in a cupboard for about 15/16 years and I then joined a band, learned bass on this exact model with bubinga top. Well balanced not too weighty, nice action. I have replaced a couple of the tuning pegs through necessity but I have even gigged with it. Go for it I say! And yeah no mods needed. Bear in mind is fully active (i.e. it has no passive mode) so needs the 9v to work at all, but it is just one battery and they last a good while as long as you don't leave a cable plugged in the jack.
