  1. Made for Jon Thorne in 2008 by Colin Cross at The Buxton Violin Shop. 3/4 size flat back bass. It features : A 39 inch stop length for tremendous ease in left hand playing. Irving Sloane Machine Heads, the finest geared machines in the world. Very slender shoulders for easy access to the high register. A truss rod in the neck for extra support. A slim neck for left hand comfort. Highly figured seasoned flamed maple for superior tone, and an ebony fingerboard. A Fishman Full Circle Pick Up in an adjustable bridge. A custom made Deluxe Mooradian Softcase. The sound of this bass is exceptional, with very deep rounded growling low notes and excellent clear high notes, with all registers speaking very quickly and clearly due to the flatback. It has played in well and has been used on an extensive number of gigs and on a wide variety of music. This would make an ideal instrument for a soloist in either jazz or classical music due to the combination of rich tone and the speed and ease with which it can be played through the entire register. It would also suit someone with smaller hands or anyone who feels that they “fight” with a larger bass. This bass produces a loud and full sound without having to have a high action, and is very easy to intonate accurately on. This instrument can be heard to good effect on numerous recent CD releases including : Lucy and the Wolves - Martha Tilston (Pizzicato) One Good Thing - Lou Rhodes (Bowed) LOB (length of back) - 108cm (42.5in)
Width across upper bouts - 47.75cm (19.5in)
Width across middle bouts - 35cm (13.75in)
 Width across lower bouts - 63cm (24.75in)
Depth of lower ribs inc both plates - 19.8cm (7.8in)
String length - 99.1cm (39in) Price - £10,495.00 ono. I can provide further photo’s or MP3‘s of the bass on various tracks upon request. Feel free to come and try in out in person in Manchester. Please email me with any further questions, or call 07540 633670 Payment to be arranged after the sale. Thanks for looking.
  2. It is a czech-ease bass, and Sting has at least shown a continued desire to grow and explore as a musician through out his career. This song is a very very old traditional folk song, most recently covered by James Yorkston on his new album "Folk Songs". Couldn't make out the bassist but it looked like the guy from Medeski Martin and Wood !
  3. For sale - A Bespoke 3/4 Electric Double Bass by Colin Cross of Buxton Violin Shop 2009. Based on the design of the double bass Colin built for Jon Thorne in 2008. A totally unique instrument built specifically to replicate the sound and feel of a double bass as closely as possible, this quality piece of craftsmanship has many high end features including 1. Fine quality flamed maple for the body and ebony for the fingerboard. 4. A Fishman Full Circle Pick Up 5. A comfortable action and a 39" stop length for greater ease of playing. 6. This will make the perfect international or local travel bass for the player who wants the feel of the real thing whilst wanting to leave their double bass safely at home. It would also make a perfect practice instrument if noise and neighbours is an issue. Price £1550 Please email me if you require more photos or call Jon on 07540 633670 with any questions.
