LOL I remember those old PA amps from back in the day.  As for the TB50 it simply didn't have the power to produce a reasonable volume without distortion. Some folk like Lemmy just went with the crap and made it part of their sound. The engineer in me could not so I started on my quest to sound like a bass and not a distorted low tuned guitar!

If you like what the TB50 does for you more power to you - enjoy. :D

I used to own a few Selmer T&B heads that were my main amps, but for guitar. They were amazing. I was buying them for £50 twenty years ago. Those were the days.

I did some bass recording with one, but it really didn’t have much about it in that application for my needs. Managed to record fairly well at lower volumes before it began to fart out, but didn’t have the grunt to gig with it.

  2. Anyone else using old valve amps for bass?

I bought this old beast right before the first lockdown as a DOA amp. It needed a full restoration (electronically). I finally got it finished and tried it out.

Wasn’t expecting much, but it actually sounds great for bass. Balanced across all of the strings, and the G string sounds FAT, whereas I’m used to my Ampeg (PF-500) sounding a bit thin on that string.

It’s a bit impractical to gig with (weight), but that aside, it’s a very cool amp for bass.

  3. I upgraded the 15 in my Marshall cab a few months ago with a Celestion Pulse 15. Its still a bit farty in the low end, and not as 'fast' as I want it to be. I'm sure that it could be great in a better cab enclosure.

I've moved to a SVT410HLF and much prefer it.

  4. I’ve lashed up this MM 2-band EQ recently and just finished it tonight. It won’t win any prizes for sexiest wiring, but it will work and hopefully sound good.

  5. Hi all, thought I’d introduce myself. I joined last week after googling for a set of Fender Pure Vintage J-bass pickups that brought me here. Seems like a great community.

I’ve only been actively playing bass since November, but have played guitar for 30+ years. Bass is a totally different beast and it really opens up your guitar playing by being more aware of how bass fits in the band.

I think there's a difference between 'learning' a song and 'playing' a song. I would agree that, when learning, a note-accurate version would be the initial goal. When playing it, however, I'd accord much more liberty to choose how to do so, either 'as is' or with personal variances. It becomes 'playing by rote', otherwise. Just sayin'. :friends:

Total agree. I typically learn note for note, so I know what makes the song work, then add my own variances. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

  7. I don’t think it’s guitarists or bass players, or anyone specifically - it’s just lazy people. Not learning the song properly is a real pet hate of mine.

My take on this is that when you learn something note-for-note, you might learn something new rather than playing your interpretation of the song. There are often things in the original parts that make the song groove in a certain way, or gives the song light and shade.

  8. Great that your amp is sorted and holding. The Zinky-era Fender CS amps are not great across the board in my experience. I had a Tonemaster head that also motorboated and stumped a couple of techs. Thats when I taught myself how the repair amps (back in the early 2000s). Those IC-branded filter caps are garbage. If your amp still has the original filter caps, it would be worth having someone do a cap job and using some good-quality caps like F&T brand.

  9. If you are uncomfortable loaning your bass out, don't do it. You have no obligation to some stranger.

To be fair, if I was travelling to another country to do a gig and not taking my own gear, I'd be scoping out places where I could rent a bass. However, gear is so personal, so I'd always be taking my own stuff.

  10. Nice stuff. I've used 50-100w valve amps in the past for bass and they can record well, but didn't have enough grunt for live use in a loud rock band.

Is the output stage pentode or ultra linear? You could get more clean headroom with UL, but you lose the Pentode 'growl'.
