1. We've been asked on a few occasions to play gigs at pubs/clubs we haven't played before, we always say "£250 please" but obviously we're prepared to be negotiated down, On the occasions we've been told "sorry we don't pay" we've always politely responded "we'll pass on that, thanks for thinking of us"

One of the bands I play in has got quite a following these days, our friends and fans travel a long way, fill the joint and drink a lot of beer, it should be a win win situation.

  2. Both the bands I'm in do at least a couple of charity gigs a year, as well as being for good causes they're an "investment" we usually get someone coming up to us afterwards asking us to play at their birthday/wedding whatever. but we'd all expect to be paid £200-£250 for a pub/club gig and £300 plus for birthday/weddings.

  3.
To be fair though,I know that if someone came upto me and said "That was cool, can I have a go?",I'd probably say no. It's not about copping an attitude, but right after I've finished playing,I don't feel like teaching or letting someone I don't know play my bass.
No I meant would they mind me ripping off their run or groove. I don't let people mess with my bass, I certainly wouldn't expect anyone to let me muck around with their's.

  4. My tutor told me "You're a competant bassist now" but i do see some guys out there and think "WOW" I try to make a point of chatting to bands and esp the bassist (obviously). If they've done a good little run or pulled a good groove i'll ask 'em if they mind me trying it. If they come over all "attitude" I'll smile at 'em and walk off.

Its Too Bad - The Jam
Down In The Tube Station - The Jam
Substitute - The Sex Pistols version - Matlock was/is very under appreciated
Pump It Up - Elvis Costello
Nice & Sleazy - The Stranglers
    London Calling - The Clash
Safe European Home - The Clash
The Real Me - The Who
if we ever meet we're gonna really get on :)

  6. at the moment I'm playing through an Ashdown five fifteen 100w combo, its not really big enough for what we need but its all i've got and can't afford anything else at the moment. Is there anyway i can boost the signal to the amp? or just generally get louder?

  7.
Use a pick, i've never seen a punk band with a finger player, it'll give you the tone you need aswell.

If you're set on fingers, just play a lot of fast songs, play 2 or 3 everday, and eventually you'll build up your stamina
thanks but i prefer I prefer finger style

    Glen Matlock?

  8. ok so at the moment I'm playing at gigs through a 30w Bogey combo which I DI through our PA. However we have lots of problems with the bass booming out through the monitors and I also suspect that the constant problems we have with the tweeters blowing in our PA is due to this.

So, would a bigger amp 50w or 65w and a subwoofer sort this out?

  9. Ok so I'm trying to teach myself musical theory, I know the difference between major and minor scales. I know and can hear the importance of the 5th, but what are modes? Locrian and Aeolian and suchlike. The book I'm reading at the moment tries to explain it, but I can't take it in, it may as well be in cantonese to me :)

  10.
I have the exact same problem, but I wouldn't put it down to tension on my part, I'm very relaxed when I play. I've tried correcting it but I presume it's down to the tendons and the other fingers...
My problem is a raised/inflexible ring finger. Is it because I am exerting too much pressure onto the fretboard? I try to keep my hand reaxed but I get drawn into the music and maybe get too excited?

  11. Hi,

I'm Phil aged 52 from Halifax. Been playing for about 6 years now, currently looking for anyone who wants to join or form a ska/Reggae band.

On here to have fun, ask annoying "noobie" type questions and learn stuff.

Anything you want to know about me please ask :)
