I love the Stranglers and tried 'Longships' the only one I know off by heart with both fingers and pick and it certainly sounds more authentic using the pick. I might stick with the bass I have for now until I have read up a lot more. Thanks for the pointers mate.

Many thanks Musky. I am at that stage as a beginner where I dont know whether to go back to fingers, or plod on with the plectrum. I am better with fingers but I know for the music I want to play most Bassists use a plectrum. decisions decisions lol!

May I jump in?

I am looking for a new bass and I am bit of a newbie. I do have a bass that I bought online (there is a warning there!) without trying. I have recently moved over to a pick as I want to play punk/rock music but as it has the 2 pickups (sorry dont know the correct terminology) I want a simpler model as my plectrum keeps hitting the pick up( obviously my technique is wrong but working on it - early days). I want something with a bit of punch (or Punk!)

I went to a local shopt today and the guy recommended a Dean 'Metal Man' bass. Anybody got any info on them?

Really enjoyed that Dave, I particularly like the way you zoom in, this is really useful for self-teaching beginners like myself.

The Peavey turned up and I am very happy with it. for the price I paid I am over the moon. Thanks for the advice, am glad I joined the forum ;-)

I am a beginner and found a few clips that were really useful for me on youtube. Especially one on scales, I watched it twice and I could remember the 3 scales he was showing straight off.

Will give this a spin later mate.

I have learnt some scales and dont mind that theory but I find I learn better by listening and watching. For example I am learning 'You really got me' by the Kinks right now. I am listening to it a lot so I can pretty much guess the note durations etc. I find it easier to learn this way.

Yes I think I need an amp as well, too many distractions with the PC!

I have been trying to learn Bass off and on for about 2 years. Not really got anywhere with it but am determined to turn over a new leaf and play!

Currently learning with the Fast track bass cd books.

I have had lessons in the past but found the teacher more into theory, he was bit of a purist. Whilst I am sure he would have given me a great grounding I was more interested in playing some bass lines I knew rather than the exam stuff.

Anyway here is hoping I pick up lots of info here. I use a guitarport with the PC but may move over to a practice amp very shortly.

I am also in the same boat as Christabel. My local shop that I try and support was trying to sell me a Fender Rumble 15W amp, I think he wanted £89 for it.

I do use the learner books with cds so would like the cd inputs. Gets boring when you have nobody to jam with! (not that I am anywhere near good enough yet!)

I will give the Peavey Max 126 a look over on your advice though.
