Beautiful character to the wood with they ‘chevron’ grain down the middle. Oil and polish gets my vote. Any guard wood go with that: relic metal, tortoise shell, white or black...or maybe no guard at all. 

I have no idea as a novice bassist but as someone who has experience working with wood I would “let the grain take the strain” and stay natural.

Beautiful bass. I thought that these were relatively light. Everything that I have read suggests average around 8 to 8.5 pounds  / 3.6 - 3.9 kg so 4.4 kg / 9 lb 10oz seems very heavy. 

I am looking to upgrade my first bass and am considering a MIM Player precision. I would love to be able to stretch to this (about the same as a new Player with upgraded bridge and pick ups - not that I would need to yet). Unfortunately I think the weight would be too much (I am not 26 any more and spend too much time at a desk than is good for my back).

Just shows how vague 'new wave' was at the time and how much vaguer it is now!

What is a genre, how is it defined, by whom, and what relevance does it have?

Some can be (relatively) clear such and punk and reggae (where does Guns of Brixton fit?).  Then we have bands that span genre. 

Can a band in 2021 be New Wave or did it have to be around in 1979-1982? Was it about fashion, musical style, structure, attitude, equipment......?

Having lived through those years and having been heavily into the ‘alternative’ bands of the time I am just interested.

Bruce Foxton and Bruce Thomas both fantastic bass players who defined the music of The Jam and The Attractions, both already mentioned. 
 

I am surprised that no one has commented on Youth’s bass playing on Killing Joke’s first album. A post-punk masterpiece.
