Why doesn't someone write a definitive book on the BB ? Looks like there would be enough interest. I guess you'd have to speak Japanese to do the research properly at source. Is there already such a resource in Japanese that needs translating into other languages ?

There really probably isn't that much interest in the overall market.  Most people don't really bat an eye at brands like Yamaha and Ibanez and just see them as the "beginner" or affordable brand.

Plus there's also an issue of false information, which Yamaha themselves have spread, like with the nonexistent BB600 that Peter Hook claims was his first Yamaha bass - such a bass does not exist, yet Yamaha themselves wrote about the BB600 in various articles talking about Peter Hook's history with Yamaha.  One would have to be very careful when writing it as to not include incorrect information.

When you say "another 4 string BB" does that mean you've got already got a couple in your herd? If so, what have you got (obligatory pics required, of course!)?

Yes of course, late 80s BB300 (not entirely sure of the exact year) and a 1979 BB1200.  The BB1200 specifically is why I'm pretty hesitant about getting a BBPH.  (Sorry for the slightly blurry photo, my cheap phone's camera isn't that great).

  3. I wonder why Yamaha is producing so few of the BBPH.  357 worldwide, only 14 in the USA, I think there's a few more than that allotted for Canada.  Not sure about the numbers for the UK and European market, haven't heard anything on that.  The BBNE2 isn't limited to my knowledge and that's a much more involved instrument production-wise.  The BBPH is basically just a custom BB734A.  Maybe they think it won't sell as much because of that?

Me too... two signatures has wiped me out...

That's what killed me, I just got my Eastwood Hooky 6 in the other day.  In fact the day it shipped was the day the new signature Yamaha was announced.  Some minor thoughts of cancelling the Hooky may or may not have crossed my mind, but I think made the right choice in the end.  Hopefully this sells fast so you can snag the new BB, apparently they're super limited.
