Oh, one other thing, there's no such thing as being double-jointed.  You just have the ability of hyperextension in the joint.

I just thought that more people could relate to the term ‘double jointed’, rather than hypermobility. I’m not sure why the term ‘double jointed ‘ exists tbh.

Thanks for all the info and sharing your stories; it’s nice to know that there are other people in the same situation.

To update, I contacted the GP again and they have decided to prescribe me cocodamol, so let’s see how that works.

    Re ibuprofen:

A doctor who checked me over when I had some nasty arthritis pain in my arms and hands from several things including working as a farrier for 27 years and playing double bass suggested that I should take ibuprofen. I was surprised when she said to take 4  500 mg tablets a day and said I thought that was a lot but she told me that some people take more than that daily for arthritis. I tried it for several months and was amazed at how much it helped, I don't know exactly what it did but the pain has pretty much disappeared and I stopped taking them. Now if I am a bit sore I take a couple a day for a week or so and it clears things up.

I realize that ibuprofen is for pain and not a medication that cures things but it seems to have worked very well for me. I wonder what dosage your doctor suggested, I know 3000mg a day is used by some arthritis sufferers so maybe you should try 1000 or 2000mg per day, ask your doctor if that's OK.

Please note that I am not trying to be a doctor here, just describing what worked for me.

    Good luck!

The doctor didn’t even suggest a dosage or prescribe anything. He expected me to buy it over the counter and follow the dosage of the packaging I guess?!

That's where I've got arthritis in the thumb base, after an xray an appointment with an Orthopaedic surgeon then a hand clinic I ended up with splints and cocodamol painkillers...that was 2 years ago. May this year 1 cortisone injection into both thumbs eased the right thumb but not the left one a blether with the Orthopaedic surgeon again didn't recommend surgery as not 100% guarantee to have full dexterity so back to splints again. As for playing I thought a Jazz type neck would be ideal but I struggled with it so out of the blue I tried a Vintera Precission bigger nut width & easier,  I guess the thumb isn't curled as such on the back of the neck so happy days. Wish you well bud.

I’m the same I thought a jazz neck would work better for me. I’d completely written off chunkier necks before I’d tried any! Unfortunately I haven’t the money between paying for engagement rings right now 🤣

My Player P isn’t that bad to play to be honest. Thanks for getting me gassing for the green Vintera btw 🙄😂

I was under the impression that Ibuprofen was more for reducing swelling than pain relief, but I think it was a doctor in Finland who told me that, so I could well have misunderstood..

One of my bands has a singer who is a GP, I'll ask her when I next see her (this weekend is the other band).

Thanks Dave, I’d really appreciate that

  5. Hi all,

I was recently diagnosed with osteoarthrosis in the ball joint of my thumb in both hands after an x-ray.  I figured for years that I had just strained them because I'm double jointed in all my fingers (generally bendy all over too) and that I just wasn't giving it time to heal with one thing and another.  I would go for stretches with no problems and out of nowhere I would pick something up the wrong way and get a bolt of pain.  I'm not even talking about anything heavy; it's happened with bowls, mugs, controllers etc.

Recently this seems to have crept into the index, middle and ring finger of my right hand in the middle joint of all the same fingers and leaves my hand in a slightly 'scooped' position when it's totally relaxed and I have to put a tiny bit of effort to keep them straight.  I'm only 38 and have been experiencing thumb pain since about 30.

I guess my questions are, how old were you when you were diagnosed, did it affect your playing, did you have to modify your technique and how did it affect your life in general?

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't frightened about it getting to the point where I can't play any more.  My doctor is useless as well - he's told me to take ibuprofen and that there's nothing he can prescribe me that will do a better job!  I'm not GP but there's more effective pain relief than ibuprofen!  I'm actually considering moving practices as I feel that I've been fobbed off and they just don't care.

Anyway, enough of my moaning.  I just wanted to get it off my chest mainly, but any advice or experiences you guys have had would help.  After all, you probably wouldn't be on the forum if you ddin't play any more, although even I've been known to be wrong occasionally 😄

  6. ‘Fine tuning’ is a good way to put it. I wasn’t expecting anything radical. Tone needs/wants can often be achieved with knowing your instrument and hand placement.

I should have explained further and said that these ‘improvements’  most noticeable when played finger style from midway between the pickup and neck. I really wouldn’t know what they would do for you as a pick player or playing close to the bridge.

I think of a more ‘classic’ tone with these when I use them and they sounded that they fit in a bit better in general. They sounded great when I was playing along with some Madness and Jackson 5 anyway 🤣🤣🤣 (as you’ve guessed I’m a bass shed virtuoso and they have not been used in a band setting)

Cool. Always keen to hear peoples thoughts on ‘new’ (news to me) gear!

I installed them today and have to say that I’m impressed. Nice note clarity and depth, but I didn’t notice a massive difference between the stock Player P pickups, but this is probably down to the lacklustre equipment I’m using.

Regardless, I’ve made my precision the best it can be in my opinion and have to recommend them.

They give off a nice woody tone with clear lows and highs are tamed and are a lot more musical than compared to the stock pickups (I hate brittle highs). Due to this it gives the tone knob a little more flexibility as there are more usable tones.

They also came in a nice wee tin with a personalised message which is also a nice touch. Was it worth it? Absolutely. I’m all for supporting smaller business. They really do need more exposure!

  8. I seem to have looked everywhere and they are either going to be dispatched in 4-6 weeks! or out of stock with no sign of them coming in. Obviously I don’t want to pay through the nose for a complete set, we all know how pricey they are! Any ideas where I might be able to get them online. EBay has been checked out - nothing!

    Thanks,

    Chris.

  9. I’m about to undertake a project, gradually upgrading a Ray 4 I picked up today. I’ve decided to put in an East preamp and have that covered, but wondered if anyone could recommend a website or two which offer pickups and other hardware at a reasonable price?

    Thanks in advance

  10. So I’ve had a look online but resources are scarce at best. I love the sound of the ‘thumper’ model - plenty of body but with clarity in the lows, with what seems to be my my idea of what a p bass should sound like.

Anyone have hands on experience with these before I decide to pull the trigger? I also considered the CS ‘62 set, but they sounded a little tinny to me. I’m being overly fussy as I can only really afford to have the one bass right now and have to move a few on. After careful consideration I’ve decided to keep the p as it does everything I need it to do, so I want it to be the best it can be within reason!

    Thanks in advance

    Actually, nobody asked.

    Carry on.

Just joking, if you need me to explain to you, somebody of my age, from where I’m from would not normally listen to this style of music. Don’t worry, I work with autistic people, so I’m used to describing things to people with no concept of social cues or humour.

  12. I've not long had my M5 now, and it can really nail that John Taylor tone I find by using the neck in single coil mode and the bridge humbucker in series.  Just out of interest what configurations you are using and your inspirations?  I like Duran Duran, I'm a 37 year old man from Ireland.  So what? 😁

I have been looking at this bass on the Anderton`s site and it looks great.

It really is, just a shame that it’s in lacking colour options. It’s growing on me though!

  14. Congrats, I got my M5 today. Looks lovely. If it plays well for you and doesn’t buzz when you pluck the strings, then I wouldn’t worry too much about the intricacies of setting it up, they seem to be quite well out of the factory. You could lower the height of the strings by half a turn each time. No point in applying any more force than you need to when fretting notes. If the string buzzes, then turn it back again.

  15. My Sire M5 arrived today. It’s a great bass, lightweight and gets all of the sounds I could possibly want out of it (how lucky am I?!).

There’s surprisingly little information however on the actual controls online. In the picture there’s 3 toggle switches. The bottom one is a 2 way that switches between passive and actively and the other 2 are 3 ways which alter the sounds of the pickups. The actual humbuckers can switch between series, parallel and single coil I think.

Problem is that I don’t know which position of the switches correspond to the pickup options. I know about the other knobs, I have a V7 (which I might sell now) that has the same preamp setup.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance 🙂
