Windows is not great, but the rest of that statement is just not true any more, in fact it's probably 10 years out of date. I run a windows + linux laptop, used to run a couple of windows + linux desktops before that. First one, it was a bit like you say, second one pretty good, new one everything is USB 3 & Thunderbolt 3 and just works. Got a Quantum interface, faderport 8, NI Komplete Kontrol keyboard, Kenton Killamix, have had other midi stuff as well. I only have windows for the music stuff really, #1 purpose of my machine is linux based software development (well, linux is the OS I choose for software development anyway, because it's easily the best).

I did look at a MacBook Pro when I got the laptop, because you can pretty much just run Linux in a VM now, but I would have had to pay more money for less than half the spec.

Maybe if all I was doing was music and I had to use it live I'd get a macbook pro.

I'm not inherently anti apple, I've got an iPad pro and an iRig for a portable setup and that's great.

You are so very wrong reWindow, it is very flaky about getting sound to work with a DAW.

On my Windows laptop I down loaded trial versions of the main DAWs and spent hours and hours trying to get sound working, I gave up on getting one to work, the others were very flaky.  Only one, Cakewalk, worked straight off with no faffing around.

  2. Windows still sucks.

Yes a Windows laptop is far cheaper than an Apple Macbook but plug anything MIDI related and it may or may not work, the soundcard is likely to need tweaking to be a able to get the controller to work, the list goes on.

    Mac’s just work.

  3. Windows pc or laptops suck.

    Macbooks are great but costly.

Our iMac simply works, is fast and it does everything, the drawback being it was quite expensive.

There was an Apple Keynote the other day and the Mini and MacBook Air are both being upgraded.

£1000 is not going to get you anything new from Apple!

A Mini with 16G  and 512 SSD wil be £1400

Macbook Pro with 16Gb and 512 SSD is over £1800

The cheapest is a MacBook Air 8Gb and 256Gb SSD at £1150

I would suggest that 16Gb of RAM is the minimum you should ideally include and 256Gb SSD being the smallest hard drive.

As for software Logic Pro at £200 is all you need,

Additionally budget for another external USB hard drive to Backup the Computer Operating system and to Backup personal files

  4. Yes the same as you, flew 152’s out if Liverpool for the first 30 hours in the logbook then moved to Blackpool to fly Cherokees and Warriors to finish off the PPL.

Flying back to Blackpool from Carlisle and was near Penrith on the Solo Navigation a Tornado went ballistic in front of me, that caused a bit of seat squirming for a while, luckily I never saw the second Tornado.

Another occasion got into an argument with Manchester AT as they had my position 20 miles South of where I was which was directly above Birch Services on the M62, been nervous of flying out of or into Manchester ever since.

You’ve reminded me of how much I used to love the Biggles books!

Remember to pop over to Guitarchat.co.uk for any guitar based posts :)

The books of self styled Captain WE Johns, yes that is where my handle comes from, I read them avidly as a kid, even went on to learn to fly although not the warbirds that were flown in the books.

  6. Cheers folks, .... amuse Dad3353,..... spot on, just reading some of the posts does show humour to be a key component of this forum.

I’m a Brit and we have to gave a sense of humour given that there are 60 million if us on a small island.

  7. Ignore adverse comments for they do not know you.

Learn by whatever means work for you.

Try different sources and then narrow them down to a shortlist.

As this is a UK based forum, I will suggest you check out the talkingbass.net website, the guy who runs it has a massive area of free video tutorials and downloadable PDF files.

If you use the site as the standard then at least will help to sortout the rubbish from the good.

    Tip

If a tutorial starts off with .... wassup .... move on quickly to someone who can teach.

  8. Hi all, been playing guitar for many years but six months ago bought a Fender Jazz Bass to develop the skills and as a compliment to my Gibson LP and Ibanez 6 stringers.

Like to play a mixed bag of music.

I also have a couple of Korg Keyboards.
