My band has a vocal PA consisting 2 x DXR10s as FOH and 2 x DXR10 as floor monitors. I use a Mesa d800 bass amp and a GR Bass 2 x 12 cab. Most gigs I’m at about 10:30 to 11:00 o’clock gain and volume and this is easily loud enough.  I’ve been thinking about an ampless set up and wondered if the Yamaha PA would be ‘man’ enough to cope… anyone had any experience with a similar set up? Ta in advance.

I’ve got one as well. I’ve had 3 Barefaced cabs over the years and this little thing wipes the floor with all of them.

Nope. Doesn’t need them as it’s over 5kg lighter than the ST, has excellent side handles and has smaller dimensions. Incidentally I rarely used the tilt back wheels on my ST as I didn’t want to rattle it to bits on a footpath or road, and it was easier to just lift it through a packed pub. My ST was ace, but the GR is acer in my experience. 

I part exchanged my Supertwin for the GR AT 212 slim. It’s lighter, it’s smaller, it’s got side handles (very important for me!) and crucially I think it’s sounds better than the ST and equally as loud. GR all the way for me. 

I part exchanged my Supertwin for the GR AT 212 slim. My main reasoning for the swap was that I needed to shave some size and weight but retain the power….which the GR does very well. However I’ve got to say that after playing about 6 gigs now with the GR it just sounds spectacular. The ST was obviously pretty great but the GR is just ‘better’ all round. The only slight issue is that I occasionally get the OD light come on now and again on my Mesa D800, and the limit light can flicker if you’ve got it really mega cranked in much larger venues with no PA support. This never happened with the ST, but quick fiddle with the gain and eq and you’re good to go with no issues. 

Got a GR AT212 slim a couple of weeks ago (part exchanged my Barefaced Supertwin). Played my first gig last night with it and I’ve got to say it performed amazingly with my Mesa D800. Really loud, really clear and amazing Bass response (I like my bass to be pretty bassy). I really liked my Supertwin, but I would say the GR is a better sounding cab, plus the size and weight savings are great. And recessed handles…… superb! Really glad I made the swap. 

I have a BF Super Twin and use a D800. The 4 ohm AT 212 slim appeals to me as a possible replacement cab mainly due to the weight saving (5 kg) and it’s a bit smaller width-wise. Also I REALLY like the recessed handles, the BF side ones are not brilliant and the top one is useless. This may not mean much to some folk but I’ve got no off road parking and a lot of steps to my house to load in and out. Every little helps as they say. 

I play in a loud 3 piece band. We play almost exclusively in small to medium pubs and used a Yamaha stagepas 600 just for vocals successfully for many years. Great price and portability.
We have now upgraded to a pair of Yamaha dxr10s and a Mackie mixer, mainly because we have started to play bigger places. This gives us more headroom, slightly better clarity of sound and better eq/feedback/floor monitor control. 2nd hand should be within your budget.

Has anyone gigged both cabs ?. I play in rock/indie covers band with 2 guitarists and a drummer who plays an  electronic kit

I play in a 3 piece, loud, rock/indie covers band and also play through a super twin. I’m really impressed with the sound and volume I was getting, but was also keen to lessen the weight and size. So I bought a BB2 just before Christmas and gigged it on NYE. I can honestly say that it can match the volume I need to keep up with our drummer, I just needed to turn my amp  (Mesa d800) up a bit more. Gain and volume at 12 o clock.  Nice full low bassy sound. Happy days and will probably sell the super twin.

The last time I played a loud gig, through my own rig, I used the MB800 with my old barefaced Compact. That combination was quite capable of drowning the rest of the band out completely. 

Thanks for that. I would be very interested to hear your gig experience with the MB800 and the SC as my D800 would be very similar. Cheers.

That’s pretty interesting and good to read some real world experience comments. I’ve got a Mesa boogie d800 which I would expect would drive a SC or BB2 pretty well. Your experience with the MB500 And SC  has made me think a bit as with my current set up D800 and ST I’ve loads of head room. Don’t want to lose too much of that with any down size I may do.  Hmmm. 

Edit: I noticed on the thread that you bought an mb800. Did that help with the volume issue at all?

Yeah, have been in contact with Barefaced who suggested  the BB2 or SC might be suitable. No idea what an increased lower extension is, or what extended highs are, I just want to have an idea that if I spend 800 quid or so that the BB2 (or SC) can keep up volume-wise. All the blurb says yes, just wanted some real world confirmation.

ive changed my car, and as a result I probably need to change my bass cab so all my stuff fits in the boot. I play in a pretty loud 3 piece rock band and Use a barefaced super twin with a Mesa D800 and it’s great for my needs. I’m thinking of selling the ST and getting a big baby 2. My question is will I hear a huge difference in tone, clarity and most importantly volume with the BB2. Anybody done such a swap? Cheers.
