1. Bought a lovely T-bird from Brendon, absolutely no complaints.

Postage was rapid and packaging was of great quality. An honest and genuine seller, a pleasure to deal with and would happily deal with in the future :)

2. Bought a lovely Gretsch shortscale bass from Mike.

Item came superbly wrapped with two sets of strings and free postage. I cannot thank Mike enough for selling me such a lovely bass at such an amazing price!

Would gladly do business again :)

3. Gents, I've settled on a Gretsch Jnr Jet II - purchased from here.

This guitar will meet all my requirements and more:) It's early days in terms of my bass guitar endeavour - so maybe one day I'll fork out for what I deem my dream bass. But I guess until then, I'll just have to play as many as I can so I know what I want from an instrument.

Thanks for all of your input, it's really appreciated:)

4. Hey guys,

Get back from work tomorrow and should hopefully have some new pedals and patch leads waiting for me :)

As I've been unable to physically play around with different pedal configurations; I've sourced the instructions for all the pedals and worked out the most appropriate way to connect them in order to get the desired combinations and effects.

The only combination I cannot seem to get is to go from Fuzz Bass only ---> Fuzz bass + (+1 octave + distortion + harmony 5th's). What I can get however is Fuzz bass only ---> Clean + (+1 octave + distortion + harmony 5th's).

I don't think it's absolutely essential to have a fuzz bass signal in with the '+1 octave + distortion + harmony 5th's'; however if I do need it - I'm sure I can get something worked out.

Thanks for your input, I'll let you know how the sound is!

Following this thread with interest as I am thinking of picking up a short scale. The Jaguar SS looks great value for money, has a slim neck and PJ pickups.
I have tried a Gretch Junior and that was really nice. Also tried the Squire Bronco and liked that too but it felt like it only had one sound in it.
My favorite that I have tried so far has been the Fender Mustang with the PJ pickups fitted. The price was a bit to steep though for something I just wanted to see if I could get along with.
I have noodled on all the basses I have listed for 5-10 mins in guitar shops.

I like the body of the Jaguar, very nice style.

I wish Epiphone would do a shortscale thunderbird, I'd buy on in an instant if they did...

If it's any help I can recommend the following short scale basses:

Harley Benton P bass (pimped with new pickup d pick guard.
Scott Whittley SWB-1 (original version)
ACG Skelf Short Scale

All at different price levels but all good (but the ACG is without a doubt the best).

When I read 'skelf', I instantly thought of the Scottish slang for a splinter - low and behold the maker is in Scotland. Going off the shape, I guess that may be where the model name came from.

Would love a shot of an SWB-1, not overly keen on the body shape, but it looks like a nice, good quality bass.

Not quite sure what you mean.... You said you play rock covers, not funk (slap), right? ;)
What I mean is that when I play, I rest the butt of my hand on the bridge - like I would with a 6 string guitar. So where I strike the string with my pick is pretty far away from the Aft pick up on the Rumblekat. Although I understand that the vibration will resonate along the length of the string and to the pick up, I fear that it may lack the punch as they're a fair distance from where I'm striking.

All of the above may be absolute nonsense of course! Still a beautiful axe though.

Coincidentally, I tried one of those this weekend. The sound it made was fine, but I thought the neck was quite deep and round. I found it comfortable enough, but if you're used to a really slim neck, you may not. The Bronco neck, on the other hand, I found an absolute delight to play, as in, couldn't put it down!

Was that a Mustang aye?

More than one way to skin that cat.... Just purchase from online retailers that have an easy, no quibble, returns/refund process, return shipping at their expense, live with it for a week, keeping it mint, and send it back if you don't get on with it.

eg. Amazon has increased the price of the Rumblekat by 20 quid since I bought one, but I think £370 is still a good price, most other retailers asking £420.....

Great suggestion, I'll have a look for sellers that offer a no quibble returns.

With the pick ups being so near the fretboard, I wonder if the Rumblekat would suit my playing style...

My preference is medium and short scale. I would try a Mustang as well as the ones you've mentioned. Those I own or have tried certainly differ in feel and tone. I haven't tried the Chowny but by all acounts it's a cracking bass. Be interested to know how you get on.

I'll be sure to get a look at a Mustang if I can; thanks for the recommendation :)

My main issue is that I live in the North of Scotland, so there isn't a huge selection of guitar shops near me. And it's unlikely that any of the stores would stock short scale basses, so getting to play some before shelling out probably isn't going to happen.

12. Hey guys,

So looking to sell my Ibanez Mikro bass and get something a touch bigger/better now I know that I'll stick with playing bass.

I'm liking the look of the following basses and from what I have read, they all seem to be decent enough:

Allen Woody Signature Epiphone
http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Bass/Allen-Woody-Rumblekat.aspx

Dean Evo XM
http://www.deanguitars.com/query?upc=819998005856

Scott Whitley Signature SWB-1
http://chownybass.com/product/swb-1-scott-whitley-signature/

Does anyone have any first hand experience of which one would be better, which one to avoid (if any) or any further recommendations of a better alternative? I'm more than happy to buy second hand as well.

I'm playing in a rock cover band - Wolfmother, Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Stones, that sort of thing. I guess tonally, basses can vary a fair bit - so this may be important.

I look forward to hearing from you all and thanks in advance :)

13. Morning!

Many thanks for your reply. My current setup is similar to yours actually; I use a tuner to switch the distorted +1 octave into my guitar amp and have a clean bass from the dry out of my US600 pedal into my bass amp. But I'd like to drop the guitar amp, for portability reasons.

I'll need to have a think today about what might work. It's possible that the addition of that Switch blade pedal may be the answer.

Thank you.

14. Hey Simon, many thanks for your quick reply :)
Here's one idea. I might place the Shifter on it's own in the first loop ( loop A ) and then chain > Muff > DS-1 together ( loop B ). Bypass for clean tone.
Am I right in thinking that this set-up is more or less the same as the one I scribbled in the image attached, but with the distortion in line with the Muff pedal rather than the pitch shifter?

If that's the case, then I still wouldn't be able to go from Fuzz (loop B ) to A+B Mix? I don't see an modes in the manual that allow switching between a loop and the A+B Mix - it seems that bypass --> A+B Mix is my only option.
Or Shifter before the LS-2 (they tend to track better as first in the chain anyway) and then add the distortion?
Would this not leave me with everything pitch shifted? i.e. no low frequency bass line in the mix? I'd like to retain the unshifted bass tone with fuzz and layer a distorted octave up guitar sound on top.

These are the settings I wish to achieve, and I think I can do the majority with my scribbled setup, it's just the 'Fuzz -> Bass Fuzz and distorted +1 octave' that can't be done by keeping all cabling the same?

Clean only - Bypass in any mode
Fuzz only - loop B selected from either of modes: A <-> B, B <-> Bypass, A -> B -> Bypass
Clean /or/ Bass Fuzz and distorted +1 octave - mode: A+B Mix -> Bypass
Fuzz /or/ Bass Fuzz and distorted +1 octave - ??????

Many thanks Simon and apologies if I'm missing something obvious and/or not making much sense...

15. Hello guys :)

Looking for a little advice for a pedal-board setup; if you guys could help than that would be great. Basically I'm looking for the correct setup that will allow the minimum amount of fiddling around when performing to switch between sounds. I'm waiting on delivery of a couple of pedals but would really appreciate your input before hand.

Pedals:

Korg Tuner
Boss LS-2
Boss DS-1
Behringer US600 Ultra Shifter
EHX Bass Big Muff
DI Box (will be rarely used, although there in case I'm going into a desk vs an amp).

I'm playing in a 3 instrument band: bass, drummer and guitarist - I'll be playing bass. I plan to use the above pedal selection to allow me to mix a distorted +1 octave (DS-1 and US600) in with my clean or fuzz bass signal to fill out potential empty space when the guitarist is soloing. Sort of adding a rhythm guitar riff to my bass line, I suppose. See below for an idea of how I think I should rig my pedals.

For those familiar with the Boss LS-2 (still waiting on delivery of mine, but have read the manual) there are various different modes to choose from. I intend to run the attached pedal configuration in "A+B Mix -> Bypass"; this will allow me to play clean (Bypass) and then bring in the distorted +1 octaves and fuzz (A+B Mix) for the guitar solos. At least I think that would be the right way to do it?

However, there are a couple of tracks where I would like to play primarily in fuzz bass (Bass Big Muff) and then bring in the +1 octave guitar sound (DS-1 and US600). I can't see an easy way of doing this though that doesn't involve changing over cabling.

Ideally, it would be great to be able to run the below configurations by changing only the mode on the LS-2 or by stepping on just one pedal:

Clean only
Fuzz only
Clean -> Bass Fuzz and distorted +1 octave
Fuzz -> Bass Fuzz and distorted +1 octave

I can live with more pedal presses at the end of the day, but I thought I'd run it past you guys to save me potential headaches.

Hope I've made myself at least a little clear, I'm new to all this so excuse my stupidity :)

Many thanks in advance!
