  1. I have the 100 cube and also love the sound, particularly the bassman simulated sound. Tried with a 4 ohm 2x10 Peavey cab and there was next to no difference to the sound, just lifted it of the ground. Still thinking of trying with an 8 ohm cab for lightness and small, medium vol pub gigs.
    But perhaps just need to recognise that its a great practice amp but keep to the big rig for use along side a rock drummer.

  3. Was watching Goodfellas last night when the perfect bass sound popped out. Tracked it through to Nilsson's 'Jump Into the Fire'. Fantastic intro but the vocals are baad.
    Is this just a tube amp distorting?

  4. I have been a bass player for years and went along with my wife to church a couple of times. I felt a prescence there, but a lack in the bass prescence of the band. So I ended up on the rota. They were a good bunch and it was only a little while later that I realised that i was playing worship music to something I didn't believe in. This became irrelevant when I spent a week at New Wine and met the Holy Spirit while driving my car. So be careful if you are a non-believer - you may change your life.

    Our church is blessed with a wealth of very talented musicians and I count myself honoured to play with them. I have learnt so much about playing a variety of unknown songs in a short time frame in very fluid structures. It has fed my confidence musically for my other rock covers band.

    Now I am familiar with most of the repertoire I recognise some of the common structures above - and sometimes feel frustration that most songs are mid tempo 4/4. BUT this is generally not music performed for the enjoyment of the audience but to be sung along to en masse for the enjoyment of God. So tricky timings and structures catch people out. Its more about delivering a backing track for others to sing to -- as someone has said, an orchestra pit rather than spotlight performance.

  5. Thanks guys. You've confirmed what I was thinking. OK i exaggerated a bit we're 2 hours min, ideally need 3 not 4.
    The problem is that no matter how many times we say we need to speed up, the guys love to discuss gear and gates rather thangetting on with getting it done.
    I'm quitting.

  6. I play in a five piece pub / party classic rock type covers band. Drums, bass, 2 guitars, lead vocals also plays acoustic guitar as well sometimes. We have 4 vocal mikes, guitar cabs are miked, drums are miked. Because we like to put on a professional appearance we have lights that we use unless in the tiniest of pubs. We are lucky in that the PA is owned by the guitarists from previous bands they have been in and do we don't have to fund buying or renting one.
    But the downside is that because they have a shedload of gear they insist on using it, and are wannebe sound engineers.
    We need to arrive at least 2 hours before live time / end of sound check time to set up all the gear. The guys would really like to double this. I say life's too short and if we can't load in, set up and be ready to go in an hour - especially for a standard pub gig something should go. Should it be? Am I being unreasonable?

    Would welcome your thoughts.......

  7. Hi - I have a Valve Tone Mrk3 and love the sound through my rig at rehearsal - its a great sounding pedal. When through the PA though there is a noticeable drop in real bottom end when I use the pedal. Any way round this? I tend to run the colour switch flat and the Ge/Si in central position.

    I've done some more research and found details of the Roland 100 Bass Cube which should be perfect for quick light sessions with PA set up. Its still pretty small and light. I never use the full power of my Peavey so I might even use it for larger gigs with my 15" cab as an extension speaker where needed.

    I don't really need the effects of the Cube but they sound great and its always fun to have new toys.........

    Any other thoughts?

  9. I am looking for a small bass combo for use in church hall with PA. Needs to be loud enough to complement drums and be a useful monitor but not too load. (I have a Peavey head and 1x15 that i use in a rock covers band but it is too heavy for short light sesions)
    Thought I'd get something straight like a small peavey combo or Ashdown Perfect 10. But when I tried the Roland Bass Cube 30 i was blown away by the tone and sound in the shop. Has anyone used one in anger and have any comments?
    Also there doesn't seem to be a line out or DI so can't put the excellent effects thro PA, which seems like a major oversight?

    Line 6 has a DI out but I didn't like the tone as much.

    Any comments please?

Its all been said but to add my 2p worth, I had the actual experience of my amp -- a Carlsbro special -- smoking and farting out on stage - no back ups, no other band's gear to borrow - it was horrible. i went out next day and bought a Peavey MarkIV second hand, 15 years ago and have never had so much as blown fuse. (OK one plastic knob on an eq band has been lost somewhere down the line). that amp has been in and out of so many practice rooms and gigs i can't count. The eq is so versatile you can cover most sounds, and now I use a DHA valve pedal as well I'm like a pig in muck

    I can honestly say I've never played a different amp and been more impressed (have tried the usual Trace, Ampeg etc on shared gigs). Go for it.

  11. All the above comments are true and correct ... but in my experience if the singer's not up to scratch no will take the band seriously no matter how brilliant the musicians or songs are. Some originals singers can escape a bit because of stage prescence / character / great songs etc - think Bob Dylan. Theres nothing worse than getting to the end of a gig and trying to book another and the venue says 'great band, lousy singer' and you know in the back of your mind that they're right but you didn't want to bring it up earlier cos they're a mate or good guy.

    So in the nicest possible way its time to get harsh or get out.

    PS it's your time you put into practice, so it is your band.

  12. Playing with others is the only way to find out what its all about.

    i find that I always learn so much by playing with new people, even if its just once for a jam than I ever would twiddling at home.

    Just ask any band to go through tracks while you write down chords, it will get you off to a start at first session. Don't expect to absorb songs and structures without having ever heard them even though some people will expect you to. Keep to basics until you're comfortable, which will be soon I'm sure if you've had some lessons and go for it1

  13. Thanks for your help - I get it more now and will always take the VXL where we are in larger venues.

    Having said that, have played 2 gigs last couple of days and left the DHA on full time cos I've fallen in love with the sound. I find the 'colour' options lose bottom end so I have on just straight gain 12 o'clock for a bit of beef. So I'm going to experiment with the VXL after the DHA as a futher boost / OD option for those songs where a bit more is needed.
