  1. Nice bass. Are those Velve BII tuners? They're hard to come by and use a fairly big hole.  I'd start by measuring the hole and then look around.  If they're just under 18mm, you might have luck with Goto h FB30s - I think they're a bit fatter than the more usual ibby GB7(07)s.

Might be talking a lot of bollocks though.

  2. Maybe a valid experiment would be to pick someone who's believes in paying more for specific tone woods, bolt their bass down onto a concrete slab, connect up some robotic plucker (I said plucker), then start to drill and saw their bass whilst measuring the output from the pickups?  If tonewood adds anything, removing it should subtract.  They can keep the plucker at the end too, if it's suitably dirty.

    Just a thought.

  3. There's a seller on eBay named "barmcgabarr" who's clearly buying a lot of deko guitars and then selling them on at full non-deko price. He's got a JB-75 deko selling for £140, yet they're normally £125 (and deko is around £35).  He's got a JA-60SB for £120, but retail non-deko is £114.70!  He doesn't mention Harley Benton and determinedly avoids showing the headstock front on.  The "D"s stamped in the back are clear to see on the photos, but he doesn't mention them.

Don't know whether to hate or admire the guy.  At the very least it's dishonest, so I hope he's fixing the problems and doding a set up.

It'd explain also why dekos go so quickly - it's easy to get a browser alert and then just say yes to everything.  They'll be others doing it, and they're all turds :)

  4. I've got an old Laney RBG400 that's been lying around for a couple of years. Got it out a while back and it's completely dead. No power light, no hums or pops - nothing. I opened it up to have a look and can't see or smell anything blown. Replaced all the fuses and still nothing. I've tried checking for continuity with my multimeter and I get lots of positive beeps, but I don't know where to test.

My main thought is that the toroidal transformer has given up the ghost. Does anyone know how to test this? Is it unusual for one to die without showing any obvious external damage? Could inactivity cause it to fail?

If I were to replace it, how can I tell from the circuit diagram which one to replace it with? It says it needs a 6123, but I presume that's an old manufacturer part number, Would this one be suitable...http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/toroidal-transformers/2575231/. Is there a cheaper way?

Any help other might have would be grategully received.

    ta
    Matt
