1. LAPTOP BAG:
    LM LMlll/Power Cable
    Speaking cable
    Soundcard
    Laptop

    BASS GUITAR BAG
    Bass
    Instrument lead
    Tuner
    Ear plugs

    CAB (No cover as yet)

Great as I but the bass bag on my bag, throw the laptop back over my shoulder and carry the cab in one hand.

  2. Okay. So had rehearsal today again. To cut a long story short. Whatever the issue was last week, it was sorted...and then some.

As far as I know, everything was hooked up properly last time and the only thing could have been position of the cab and/or eq.

I put the cab on top of an unused one to begin with, turned gain up/volume down, played until clipping light came on, rolled gain back a bit. Kept eq flat with VLE & VPF off. Turned volume up to 9 o'clock (where it stayed for the whole practice!!!). Rolled off some lows and that was it. Perfection!!...and really loud.

Thanks everyone for the tips and advice. The whole thing seems a bit bizarre as I can't really explain why I had to crank it up last time. The settings and positioning of the cab/amp this time shouldn't have accounted for the massive difference but that's just how it goes.

Absolutely bowled over with the sound and extra headroom I have now. Awesome, powerful setup!

  3. Thanks again all and cheers Frank for the testing offer! May avail of it although there may be another cab at the rehearsal studio I can try out.

Glad to hear you got sorted barneyg42

  4. Thanks again for all the tips.

It did appear to be strange that everything was having to be turned up so loud. I think think the advice of taking out lows and turning up mids is great and I had done that...but it sort of defeats the purpose. The head and cab should be able to get the tone I want even at those volumes. To have to change the eq for volume reasons is a bit crazy.

The cab can take up to 600W clean tone. Just wondering if there isn't enough power coming from the amp? The fact that the amp is clipping sometimes when slapping and the volume is already boosted up?

I will give it another go this weekend and take all the advice on board. Will try tilting the cab and standing further away. Much appreciated!!!!

I will also check out the iphone app to measure decibels. Thanks for that tip.

  5. "That's surprising! I'm currently playing my Mark Bass Big Bang through one single 300W cab (meaning my head is running with a max of 250W), and I don't even need to push the gain or master past halfway, and our drummer is the loudest guy on the planet."

There may be other frequencies interfering as it is quite synth lead and no guitars.

Hmmmm. Maybe my ear drums are already shot :-) I will have to run through a few more settings at the next rehearsal.

  6. Regarding the frequencies I actually had to roll off the low bass frequencies and I tried all variations of eq settings. Got the ear protection sorted too :-)

The reasoning behind the greater wattage was that I would get 200 more watts through the cab without having to fork out a lot of money on an extra cab.

Not that I slap the bass that much but I think there was another thread on here stating that the amp cut out. Well there was a lot of clipping happening, so I just stopped slapping...prob best anyway ;-)

It was only the first time in the rehearsal rooms so I may see what it is like the next time. Quite a large room too.

    Thanks folks.

  7. Just my own woes here.

Had a band practice on Sunday. Had my Markbass cranked. Full gain and master but had to roll off the gain because it was clipping. 300W through my 8Ohm Barefaced Super Compact. The cab could handle a lot more and I needed the extra volume. Can't return the amp now so will be out a bit of money if I do upgrade :-( Only had it a month so still under warranty. Hopefully someone will take it at near fill price. Fingers crossed.

  8. I purchase some D'Addario Pro Steels Roundwound 45/65/80/100. I really wanted to go for a lighter gauge but I had to compromise. I am really happy with them as I can get a real zingy/grind from them. Been playing them for over 2 months and still have that liveliness to them. Fitted my Musicmaster well.

  9. Ha ha Frank. Bet it's a beast. Hope the gig went well. I settled into the gig 2 minutes right before the end lol. Went well. Good reception...and very loud! Onwards and upwards...and thanks again for having me round to try the cabs. Sealed the deal!

@M@23 yeah, the gain for me is more of a tone control. Didn't need that much bite and the sound setup was very strange. It's just what worked well for that scenario. Just happy that the rig was able to accommodate, which is what it's all about :-)

I really am just in awe at the sound that came out of the setup and a cheapie short scale student bass with modified pickups!

  10. Okay. I survived! As did the equipment. Very loud.

I want to give you as much detail here with my review and will summarise most of it so it's a quick read.

I have not owned an amp for 10 years

This was the first gig I have done it ten years

I knew exactly the sound I wanted

I had been reading forums and gathering information for 2 months before I purchased

I ordered online without trying the cab or head

I was able to play through a Markbass 802 and loved it. I have seen a local band play using the Markbass Tube 800 and Markbass traveller cabs

I knew I wanted a Markbass head. LM3 sounded perfect with regards to price and will allow for an extra cab at some stage if required (but I doubt it after what I heard last night)

THE HEAD - The LM3 gave me exactly the tone and sound I was looking for and more. A lot of people on this forum and others state that it is very clean sounding and doesn't colour and that is very true, but I also think it should be mentioned that you can get really dirty grinding sounds (I think the actual bass used is an important factor. I have a passive fender with Seymour Duncan hot rails which gives off a great vintage precision sound). Many people, from what I read, usually opted for a Tone Hammer or Genz Benz, but I have heard these and you can get that sound from the MB head. Master was at 12 oclock and gain at 9 oclock. The low/mid/high and MB filters were excellent and allowed tweaking with ease.

THE CAB - Still breaking it it, but it just sounded superb. Really moved the air and with the head, allowed me to achieve a perfect balance when cutting through and blending with the other instruments. It did not struggle in the slightest and could have given it a lot more welly.
A word about the rest of the set up. We had a laptop going through a PA and a very brave/loud drummer behind the PA speakers with no monitors. My bass set up sat out on it's own, but it all blended seamlessly.

Hope this is of some use to someone and if you have any questions, just pop them below :-)

    Oh yes, and an image...https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1709512/gig.jpg

  11. With regards to the cat, at the moment, it's a bit like the monoliths appearing in Space Odyssey. Had the MB LM3 through it last night for a bit, very low volume, but it sounded sweet. Got the sound I wanted, but the real test comes tonight at it's first gig...and my first gig in over 10 years!!!

If I survive I will let you know how the amp performed.

  12. I'll be able to tell you this coming weekend. Getting BF Super Compact delivered tomorrow. Gigging it on Friday night. Electronic music, very loud, live drums and vocals. I know the cone takes a while to adjust and even out, but it should give a good indication of what is possible. Currently use a Behringer 300W combo which is loud enough already and is only turned up just below half.
