This might be an ignorant question – the only metal I've ever played was back when you could do it with EADG (or E♭A♭D♭G♭ at a push) – but that's a really peculiar tuning, so close to but not quite standard. What led you to choose it?

- the impetus for this tuning comes from the bottom 4 strings on a "drop-B" tuned guitar.

Originally, I dare say it was for the ease of translating what a guitarist was playing into my own terms, without having to write down every single note.. - back when I was a considerably less musical sasquatch. If I could see it, I could play it.. theory, nay even basic scales, were not my forte, not hot on transposing.

Nowadays I've reverted to playing in this again from standard because of the ease of fingering some intervals quicker(?) quicker/accurate access to octaves especially, & some of the riffs just need to be stepping up to the F#, not played mostly on the B, makes things pop more than rumble amorphously. But all that drivel could be said of any drop-tuning..

You do need to pay attention, but tension wise I think you will be fine if you use a standard B, so a .130 (0.135) even

B->B no change
E->F# full step up
A->B full step up
D->E full step up
G->A full step up

then since you are uptuning the rest a full step I would go with a really light 35-90 set (35-55-70-90).

That's what I did back in the day.

Thank you kindly sir!
I'll get hunting for some lighter noodles right away
Much appreciated :happy:

3. I play an BF#BEA tuning in a primarily metal band.

Looking for some rough suggestions on what kinda gauges limits might be supposed as appropriate -
mainly looking at the F#(E) string,
reckon I ought't go lighter?

Current string set is 125 95 75 60 40, roundwounds(roundcore)

Is this something that can be advised, or do I need to pay better attention to the state of my neck/truss & just figure out what the bass can take?
I appreciate that'll be the overall sentiment.. but some rough figures from bass sages would be appreciated.

FYI it's on an Ibanz SR605

4. Hi there folks,
long time lurker first time poster here. :ph34r:

Sorry if TMI, looking to avoid you having to ask more Q's initially

Looking for help & some direction from you informed folks on what's hot & what's not.
Reading a lot of contrasting views on lower market compression.

Not really looking to mess the floor with another pedal, I want reasonably high-end compression to go in the rack. Looking to make the investment to begin with.
Want something that's got good selection of knobs to twiddle & a few thumbs up in it's direction
Budget range 500-800 could probably be talked into higher if it's truly worth the extra squids.
Seems a bit silly to go mad on this when my ampage ain't all that thou :lol:
But.. a decent compressor is a decent compressor eyh.

bit of background;
Usually playing Ibanez BTB 6 through Hartke LH500, with Hartke 4x10 cab.
Mostly for playing some variant of metal, I guess 'technical' to a degree.
Sometimes using Darkglass b7k (Still getting used to dialling it in mind) & Boss ME50b for reverb & chorus.
In band I play the same "drop B" tuning as the guitarists, BF#BEAD
Also fiddle about in GCGFGC
N.B need it for live, not studio

I use a variety of techniques, hasty swaps between slap & finger, hammer-finger(ish), lots of dead notes, few thumb rakes, three-digit fingering - it needs some serious smoothing for the ears to be happier :(
But I still need percussive edge of dif. techniques to come through & for it to be clear enough to punch out from the deep end between two distorted-up & downtuned guitarists.

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to bass gear, so help me out folks

The waffles are done! Give us the blueberries & syrup
What are the names to be considering? :gas:
