1. My band went in a similar direction to the one MoJoke suggests. Having got thoroughly fed up of lugging around the flightcased mixer/power amps (yep, 2 of the buggers) behometh we went for a pair of Mackie Thump 12 powered full-range speakers.

We only use PA for vocals, so this option may not of course work if you're using the PA to support bass and/or kick.

We've ditched the power amps altogether; we've got powered monitors as well

3. I'm lined up to do something very similar to the OP, a wedding gig in November covering for a bassist who's retired ( I wasn't aware that this was an actual thing!) since the booking was made. The tentative set list as agreed with the singer/guitarist is as follows: -

Summer of 69
My Sharona
Walking on Sunshine
Johnny B. Goode
Caroline
So Lonely
2-4-6-8 Motorway
London Calling
Get It On
Girls Talk
All Right Now

'You want that with extra cheese sir?' Abso-flippin'-lutely!!

:D

4. Sorry to say but there really are some people that just don't have natural rhythm. Our singer is a bit like the one the OP describes. He does however recognise the issue and gets around it mostly by learning the songs verbatim (we play exclusively covers). Every once in a while he takes my breath away by coming in on the wrong beat, and staying on the wrong beat until the rest of us fall about laughing. This is fine in rehearsal, but once in a while it happens when we perform. It certainly keeps you on your toes!

We put up with it as otherwise he's a very good front man.

A mate plays drums for this band. I know they've always got lots of gigs, which is an indicator of their talent and abilities

6. My singing voice is quite good, I can hold a tune etc., but I always used to shy away from singing backing vocals whilst playing bass for all the reasons mentioned above - countermelodies, insufficient brain power, whatever.

I've mostly got around this by trying to learn new songs for my covers band all at once, learning to sing the backing vocal at the same time as getting to grips with the bass pattern. Sometimes this doesn't work, especially if the bass pattern is particularly busy, but the approach certainly got me started singing bv.

7. Might be worth a visit to Musicbox anyway. If nothing else there's a notice board in the foyer where people advertise gigs, gear for sale, bands looking for musicians (and vice versa). You could put a poster up 'bassist seeking band'.

It might even be worth asking the guys that run the place whether they know of any opportunities to play, either open mic or band openings. They're a friendly bunch

8. I rarely use a pick these days, but back in the day when Bruce Foxton was my inspiration (Precision: black, black, maple) i used these: -

I like the shape, 'cos it's harder to use them the wrong way around, and there's 2 more 'points' when one wears out ;)

9. Gentlemen,

I've just purchased a Palmer Pedalbay 50s pedal board http://www.palmer-ge...PEDALBAY50S.htm, which is a great 'small' board, with just about enough space for 6 Boss-sized pedals.

I'm looking to track down a power supply that I can mount on the underside of the board, but I'm somewhat limited by size. There's at most 35mm of clearance, which narrows down my choice.

I reckon the T Rex Fuel tank Junior would fit under the pedal board; can anyone suggest alternatives?

Normally in the band I play everything with a pick, but recently we've written some stuff which for lack of a better description is country-rock-esque and would perhaps be better served using fingers. However, if I just jump from pick to fingers without changing anything else then I find the tone a bit...muddy/muffled (??? I hate describing sounds) I guess.

Any generic tips for changing from pick to fingers and vice versa? EQ changes (what?), level changes, anything really?

First person to turn this into a pick vs fingers argument is waiving their right to complain should I ever meet them in person and deliver the world's most epic wedgie. You have been warned.

The difference you've described sound pretty much what you'd expect to get when changing from pick to fingerstyle with no EQ or volume settings changes - playing with a pick gives a brighter sound with more attack, whereas fingerstyle gives a less trebly, 'rounder' sound. If this isn't the reason you're playing the new songs with your fingers as opposed to using a pick, why the change?
