He likely meant the original SUB USA models. Fantastic basses. Pick one up used as soon as you see one advertised!
That's the one! Thank you.

Impossible to tell which ones he meant. but there is:
SUB USA: Mid 2000s, textured finish and metal pickguard, painted necks, go for £500-£700
Sterling SUB / Ray: Far east made, thinner nut profile and 'large' bridge. Sounds close enough but they do feel a lot cheaper.
Sterling Ray 34: Far east made but higher quality, full copies of USA instruments
If you can get a USA SUB for a good price they are just as good as a 'proper' Stingray.
Yes! The USA SUB series, thank you.

I remember an old bass teacher of mine telling me about a series of Music Man basses (I think it was the Sub Ray?) which were just great and for the money, outweighed buying a stingray. Can anyone help me on clarifying the model and potentially a year to look for?
Cheers!

Can I ask how much it weighs?
Just weighed it and it's 4.65kg

That's a great question, I'd say around 4-5kg but I don't actually have an accurate way of measuring that, I'll get some tomorrow and get back to you with a definite answer!
It certainly isn't on the weighty side, I'm not big and used to have it on for a couple of hours no problem.

This was my first 'proper' bass, it's absolutely amazing but unfortunately I just don't play it anymore. I used it in a disco/funk band and since that ended a few years ago I haven't shown it the attention it deserves and it's time for it to go to a home where it'll be utilised!!
As you can see it's pretty imaculate other than the slight knock on the side of the body below the input, I've only really ever played it in rehearsals, bar a couple of gigs. It comes with the hardcase, cover plates and the best bit, your very own fender dusting rag!
It's been professionally set up, it has a bit of a higher action but that's just my preference. I also have the original black pick guard you can have with it, I just preferred the white. It really is a wonderful sounding and looking bass, I will be sorry to see it go!
Not a bass but would trade for the right Telecaster!

Thanks for pointing that out, my current bass doesn't have an contouring either and it's ok, but definitely good to know!
