Breaking news (to me anyway but not seen it elsewhere or on this thread) Wilko Johnson is now able to play live again and there is another album in the making

That's great - I saw them in 2011. Norman was godlike.
I bought his new album - some great lines on it. if anyone sees him tell him he should do lots more!!

If you like the pure sound of the bass you just need a good quality cable, but if you want something for balanced DI'ing, EQ/limiting etc the Phil Jones bass buddy preamp is great - you can even use is as a practice amp head.
-
I loved my old Hartke 3500 through my SWR 1x18 (with Bag End). No tweeter.
But the Phil Jones Suitcase+4B is simply the best thing I've ever heard to reproduce your sound - your hands and instrument. Most of my youtubes are DI from a preamp but all would sound better using a mic that picks up down to 20hz on my Phil Jones 8x5 "rig". -

Hi All
Coincidence is funny - here's one of my recent builds

It's a babe...
Love the stuff y'all have done. Long live the P. -
Thanks for all the info on this thread.
I recorded with Z-Bias the other week. A thoroughly decent chap, and amazing to watch creating stuff from scratch on Cubase - I didn't realise he was one of Dubstep's inventors at the time. I used my 62 CIJ P-Bass straight in to the desk. He loved it (heh - at least he said he did) - if he releases summat I'll post a link.
I should have read this thread first - I didn't take any effects, and assumed he will do some magic with plugins afterwards. I hope he does - I'd like to hear my p-bass dubstepped-up! -
Heh - thanks, but I'll go with the majority on this. It's a great bass, with or without the toys.

I recommendz 'em. I'd ask them for an endorsement but it would cost me more in phone calls than buying another. £50, new.
A pain in the ass to tape the neck up to finish the frets, but worth it. The preamp is (obviously) cheap, so I smooth it out with the Phil Jones Bass Buddy preamp and happy days ensue.
Hope it doesn't fall apart when I put heavier gauge flats on it - the fender tapewounds are OK but the rotosound tapewounds or normal flats would be better for me I guess. -
Been listening to this beautiful song again after many years (guaranteed lay, every time BTW!! ) and the bass line has really caught my ear. It sounds like Chuck Rainey but since I don't have any sleeve notes I can't be sure.
Anyone in the know?
CB
It was the utterly unfamous Ed Brown on this album. Good stuff!
ETA: Don't forget Minnie broke the rules with "Lovin You" - no bass player. Meh. -
Nathan Watts and Verdine White.....should i tell you more about these fantastic bass players????
Two of my favourites, for sure.
Don't forget that James Jamerson was the player on the original versions of I Was Made To Love Her and For Once in My Life - he was quite handy, too.
Michael Henderson and Scott Edwards both had short spells in Stevie's band as well, but Nathan bass-god Watts has been the man for over 30 years now. -
You two are blessed with the 51 voodoo - please share with us!
OK...this is where I admit to the true extent of my geekery on Pino.
If you're a spotify user, get involved with my Pino playlist: http://open.spotify.com/user/owen_liam/pla...3HUz9u2joumbZ2Z
Feel free to add or contest as you see fit!
As far as I'm aware, Pino played on everyone of these tracks, from Sugababes to Manu Katche, Gary Numan to Daniel Bedingfield!
My fave at the moment though are his contributions to Roy Hargrove's Hard Groove. Awesome playing!
Great playlist. Thanks! -
My favourite band. Unequalled.
Very difficult to argue with. Have you had this one on the thread yet?

Verdine's solo (a bit of it anyway):

And....nuff said:

Leo Fender gave us the wonderful p-bass, we all know that, but look who was born that year:
2/2 Alphonso Johnson
15/2 Norman Watt-Roy
7/3 Francis Rocco Prestia
30/6 Stanley Clarke
7/7 Michael Henderson
26/10 Bootsy Collins
1/12 Jaco Pastorius
I ain't superstitious, but that's a hell of a year!
There may be more - I only did a quick search. -
Great thread. Gonna slow it right down for a minute....

Nice one, I'd hit it, but I'd rather have Jim's. -
Thanks for the great photos Jim. Can't wait to hear it recorded, maybe later this year?
Who's Michael Henderson? A quick primer for you lucky people who haven't discovered him yet:
In the 60's he started recording for Motown when he was 13. He became a Motown road bassist while James Jamerson was locked away in the studio - at 16/17 he was one of the only ones good enough to learn some of the incredible lines Jamerson was creating. The kind of kids that came to see him play Motown shows at that time were Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, Miroslav Vitous....he later joined Stevie Wonder's band and toured with him (he was a ripe old age of 19 then), until Betty Davis saw them in NY and told Miles Davis he should go see Michael play. Miles took one look at him and told Stevie Wonder after the show "I'm taking your F***in' bass player". He then became the longest ever serving bassman for Miles Davis (and Stevie spent the next few years playing his own keyboard bass). That's the early years anyway. -
Two Michael Henderson masterpieces posted - (Johnnie Taylor & Miles Davis). Good to hear that Jaco track again....pity we can't put a comment on there to name the players.
-
Nice one! 3 of Jamerson's lesser known gems added.
-
I thought I'd post a quick note to say I was lucky enough to meet Michael Henderson in Blackpool at the weekend, and got to play a little on a bass made for him by Jim Fleetwood. It's a beautiful instrument he's called The Starship bass.
I think it's wonderful that Jim paid this tribute to MH - he's simply one of the most important bassists ever and it's about time he had a signature bass. Most of his recorded work was with a Jazz bass, but the Starship has a J/M pickup set up. I'll try to get a few pictures and post eventually, but heads up, the Starship is landing in 2011. -
A few comments:
The finish is satin to look at but it's only a sealer coat as far as I can tell - easy to overspray though. This neck is for a 51 type bass I'm building so I'll be ambering it up. (is that a real word?)
The neck was just stuck in there with a small shim at the end - took me 10 minutes including getting in tune. I didn't do it but the neck pocket of the squier body needs a little bit extra depth and contouring to the right shape of whatever neck your using - this neck's end shoulders are a tighter radius than the body so theres a small gap - the bridge saddles on this are raised to compensate for the shallower neck pocket.
Nut width? Nah - I have big hands and don't even think about it. I love 'em all.
The tuners are Allparts fender vintage repro's - really nice but a pain in the ass to fit as the headstock has to be routed (not neatly, so easy to do!) to accept the protruding steel "strap ends" for the tuner to sit flush with the back of the neck.
Here's a quick disco-stu number on it:

What a good question...I love 'em both, so I made this bass:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_iYxbkEYDg
The 51P pickup takes care of the top and bottom, while the MM lets me get real dirty.
Mine's all passive - to get the classic MM sound I would need the right (2EQ) preamp, I use my amp or outboard preamp and shelf boost the bottom and peak boost the 2.5k - it's surprisingly active-sounding.
