I'm not sure how to go about shifting this lot. Anyone see anything they would like to swap for an old Yamaha Dt 175? A dooer-upper is worth anything from a grand up. Money either way and I probably won't sell the rick.

    Cheers

  3. Got an old hollowbody Columbus bass off ebay recently. Its in good condition and plays reasonably for an old thing. The action is a bit high but it gets a nice vintage sound... not low and fast though.
Probably better suited to hanging on a wall than as a regular player but Im a sucker for old Japcrap.

  4. Got the 4003 today and am over the moon with it. Everything seems to be pretty much spot on. The action was a smidge higher than I like so I adjusted it slightly. Intonation is perfect, pickups sound great.. that neck pickup is a dirty bugger!
I have ordered a treble bezel with the cove from rickysounds and as soon as it arrives I will ditch the pickup cover and fit the bezel. It's right in the way for plectrum playing with the heel of your hand on the bridge.
The neck feels like my old Kramer forum 4,.. quite chunky at the nut end and the knob configuration is downright weird, but that just something I will have to get used to. I love the glossy neck and my schaller straplocks appear to work with the ric strap buttons.
Anyway, thumbs up from me for the 2014 4003!

  5. Im sure there are new sub-cultures popping up all the time but they dont seem to be as 'all encompassing' as they used to be.
The young'uns today seem more interested in youtube and bookface that music. When I were a youf (mid 70s) I would study album covers, learn the guitar/bass lines and search out the appropriate gear to wear to signify my position in the movement.
Its not like that now... imho.
    Ps. What is a youtuber?

  6. I second the get stuck in approach. Its the best way to learn. My tips (for what its worth) are as follows:
Start on a low value item if possible... not your new Ric.
    Try to use appropriate tools.
Remove wood as a last resort.
If you get stuck go for a brew and do a bit of research.
Dont start working on a bass an hour before a gig or rehearsal.
Get all the parts before you start.
Find a suitable place to do the work.
Dont take on too much.. know your limits.
Do it! Fettling you own gear is very satisfying.

  7. I know the sensible thing to do would be to trawl around the country trying various basses but 'the guvnor' didnt go mentally when I proposed the purchase so I had to strike while the iron was hot, so to speak.
I have a bit of a collection (20 at the moment) and have picked up a couple of guitars off ebay with issues. Whilst most things are fixable I hoped a new Riccy would be issue free and since its by far the most expensive of my purchases I thought it would be less risky option.
Anyway its on its way now so I will let you know how it goes on its arrival. I am pretty flappin' excited! Fingers crossed.

  8. You guys are scaring me! Ive just ordered a 2014 ruby 4003 after years of hankering after one and am now worried that its not going to be all I had hoped.
Ive played many different basses over the years but my 'go to' bass is an ibanez roadstar 2 which is a delight to play and very versatile.
Whenever I get a new (usually used) bass I find it takes a fair bit of tinkering before it is just how I like it and I guess the Ric will be the same...

  9. Just snagged a 1979 one of these from a Ca$h Converter. Looks like a jap one due to date.
3 of the 4 pots were stuck solid so I was about to replace them. Took wiring out, filled the pots with wd40 and took the mole grips to them. They all freed up so stuck it all back together.
Seems like a well constructed bit of kit. Well chuffed.
