  1. The idea of vintage bass gear is nice, but the real life situation of maintaining, transporting the stuff just seems like a nightmare and back buster. I am pretty glad to get some fantastic vintage tones from my current lightweight setup without busting a gut :)

  2. When people say oomph... They probably mean those unusable sub bass frequencies that muddy up the entire mix, leaving the kick drum buried. Also due to the wavelength of bass frequencies being longer than higher, they would be more pronounced at the back of the room.
I've had both Class D's and your back breakers, i've pony sounding amps in both fields and good sounding amps from both too. That's why you should always try before you buy.
Another problem is that a lot of bass players just don't know how to EQ their amps properly which in turn gives poor performance and poor sound from the amp.

Just my 2 pence rant :)

  3. Yeah it already has flats on it and I do enjoy the sound of it but I have no use for it which is a shame. It is a rosewood fretboard so I wouldn't want to defret it myself. I've also thought about buying a fretless neck but I think warmoth's are roughly about £400??

I have to say that these are very intriguing... the SR1200 looks awesome. All those tone woods, and the reassuring attention to the truss rod being titanium etc.

I have a lot of respect for Ibanez guitars, and am not surprised their basses are well respected around here...

Might need to take the plunge one of these days

Do it, I was reserved about them for years but I tried a few out at the bass gallery in Camden and was just blown away by how good they are. My intention when I walked into the shop was to get a Warwick but I walked out with the Ibanez!

  5. Alright Guys and Girls,

I've got an old MIM Fender Precision that's just sitting in the corner collecting dust (literally). I've been toying with the idea again about having a fretless for playing Jazz with but funds are tight. Do i...

    A) defret the precision and get some new hardware to spruce it up
    B) Swap it for a fretless of similar value or...
    C) Sell it and Buy something else?

Answwers on a postcard or preferably on here would be great!

    :)

  6. I have a fairly old MIM Fender Precision, i'd say roughly early 00's that I swapped with another bass a while ago. Although I enjoy it's sound (i've put flatwounds on for old skool thump too) It's just doesn't get used enough as my main bass (Ibanez SR1205) is just far superior. I may see if I can swap my fender for a fretless bass.

Not recently, but it happened a few years ago. We turned up to a pub in St. Austell, the landlord denied ever making a booking and told us to go. As we left, a couple of young lads were carrying record decks in - it turned out that the landlord was taking the money from the brewery for a band, getting a couple of kids on decks for £50 and pocketing a nice £150 difference. Tosser.

    Ouch! That's harsh!

  8. Hey everyone!

I just thought I would need to rant! Last night was supposed to be the debut gig for my funk/soul band but end up getting there finding another band setting up in front of you saying there's been a double booking. I don't personally deal with the bookings as someone else in the band does and they were chasing the person in charge of booking. Apparently the landlord and the person in charge of bookings decided not to communicate with each other and thus causing this horrible situation with 3 hours and fuel wasted. :(
The venue in question was The Huntsman in Rochester, just in case you were wondering.

Has anyone else been in this situation before?

  9. Yeah for me it's all about song choice and flexibility. Most songs that I play require that extra string, and I now prefer the tighter string spacing that 5 string basses usually have. I personally couldn't really play another 4 string ever again.

The Bass Gallery in Camden is dedicated to Bass, Wunjos isn't I don't think but has a good reputation for bass as does Guitar Guitar in Epsom.

Slightly further afield, Bass Gear in Reading is deicated to bass, as is Bass Direct in Leamington-Spa. Andertons in Guildford and GAK in Brighton, though again both cater to guitarists as well, have good bass departments

I actually got my SR1205 from the bass gallery, really nice and helpful people. Even took the time to set the bass up just how I like it.

  11. I guess it all depends on the genre you play. Back in the day I'd play rock/metal through a heavy rig (peavey firebass 700 amp and matching cabs) and it was great for that, but it definitely pulled a few muscles transporting it. But now being older, wiser and now playing funk soul and jazz I find my lightweight setup incomparable (Markbass LM3, x2 Bergantino 112 cabs). The tone is just out of this world and volume has never left me wanting more in any situation. In short I don't miss my old heavy rig at all...

    VIVA LA TECHNOLOGY!

  12. Played a gig last night with my new setup (Bergantino HT & EX112s, Markbass LM3, Ibanez SR1205 with an MXR compressor) and holy jeez does this rig sound good! And it was insanely loud, literally didn't have it past the first notch and even then it was slightly too loud but it allowed to play lighter with my fingers and really getting some nice tones through it. Proper funk machine!
