I remember that video of Wishnevski playing one of his basses in a backyard blues jam with a guitarist. I'd get the video off YouTube if I wasn't using my iPhone. It was hilarious, the playing from both musicians was so ponderous and awful. It was ridiculed on talkbass before they outlawed the criticism of anyone who uses the site.

sadly that video was deleted months ago. It used to be in my youtube favourites!
It sometimes happens when manufactures don't use completely dried out timber, wood with a very open grain (ash for example) or they don't seal it properly. After several years it can sometime happen even when everything has been done properly, working with wood sometimes throws up these problems.

It's certainly not structural and has been said before happens on more a few expensive brands with poor quality control.

It's a cool looking bass and probably no one is going to notice the blemish unless you point it out.
Thanks Rich. It DOES have an ash body, and you're right - no one but me would ever notice it unless I said. I had it for a couple of days before I even noticed!

It could be that water/sweat has gotten in at an exposed area in the pup rout and run along an open piece of grain (capillary action) thus expanding it.
This is a brand new bass out the box, no sweat or water has been near it! There's not really much to see, it's just a short section where there's a small lip or ridge in the finish in a perfectly straight line.
Not a bridge ground wire from the pick up cavity is it?
It has EMG electronics, no ground wire!
I've had similar-looking flaws in guitars before and never had issues with their structural integrity.

As an aside, I unboxed 3 brand new LTD Surveyor 415s when I bought mine, and I had to choose between a split in the neck pocket of one, an odd twist in the neck of another, and a small defect in the finish on the back of the third. Needless to say that the third is the one I took home, but it goes to show that lame QC isn't necessarily uncommon. I'd even have cared if it weren't for the ridiculously low price I paid.
Total price on this one was $269 (£170) brand new on closeout from a big box US internet retailer. As long as there's no risk of it moving I can put up with it. Thanks for the replies guys

  4. As long as it's structurally sound I don't care about it to be honest. Between the bridge and the pickup there's a raised section where I assume the body pieces join. The finish isn't broken, it's just a perfectly straight, very slightly raised section parallel to the strings. I've circled the area where it is but you can't see it on the pic. Kinda lame on the QC but as long as it doesn't move I don't mind

  5. I had them on my Ibanez ATK, they came stock on it. Never liked the greasy feel of them and they felt very stiff too. Sound was not bad but not great either. Replaced them with Prosteels and it's much better now.

  6.
It's the really fast strumming on the top 3 strings that gets me, I keep loosing grip on the pick. But yeah, the bassline is nice and easy and fun to play.
It's the chord changes in a pretty cramped area that gets me!

  7.
She's Dutch I believe. And yes, she is very good. But surely we don't have to limit ourselves to just one young, attractive, talented female bass player?

I much more enjoyed that one

  8.
Can't comment on the m3, but I have the M6 carbine and it kicks ass. It covers all kind of tones from soft jazzy noodleing to in your face rock tone.

Have a look on talkbass, they get a lot of love on there.

    Cheers

    thanks dude!

  9. Anyone here play one? They good for loud, heavy rock? I've liked the clips I heard but I haven't really seen anyone playing rock bass on them, just jazzy noodlings and slap bass.

    Cheers!

  10.
ATK is real nice! I have never played one I fancy a go now after seeing yours. Cool.
It's good, real chunky neck on it. Solid bridge and the pickup and preamp are of a decent quality. The Elixir strings that came on it new though I hated, they felt greasy :S
