I have fitted many of the Graphtech piezo/Hipshot bridges, and I would say if it isn't a fretless I generally find the piezo unhelpful at best and sometimes downright speaker-threatening at worst. Don't bother on a fretted.

I like the sound of a good piezo, but the subharmonic thumps you can generate can be very harmful to speakers. And they sound much 'politer' than magnetic pickups, as they are indeed full range.

In general, if it isn't already installed, I wouldn't spend the money and effort. I'd look for a bass with it already installed.

Sorry to be such a downer, but I have spent plenty of time and money here with some disappointment, even with the very nice Graphtech systems.

Did you use the Acousti-Phonic preamp? I'm curious how it compares to the Fishman Powerchip?

  2. I talked to an ex-Fender rep awhile back who told me after Leo Quan died production pretty much stopped. Fender bought up most of the remaing stock and the rights. Then they slightly Re-designed it to look a little more Fenderish.

  3. Fender PA100 great amps, most any cab will sound good with it. But it is only 100 watts, so efficiency and/or multiple drivers may be necessary. And the speaker cab has a big effect on your tone so.... The more you can narrow down the tone your looking for the easier for us to help you out.

Be careful as MIM Js have both pickups the same length rather than the slightly longer bridge and shorter neck units that othe Js have. Some companies (EMG for instance) sell matched pairs specifically for MIM jazz basses - other wise you might need to get two (I think) neck pickups to fit the routed holes in your Mex bass...

Brand-wise, I would recommend EMG, Wizard (now trading as HotRod), GFS and Entwistle - depending on budget. Plenty of reviews of those brands on here! :)
[/quote] a little knowledge can be dangerous.

'99 was the last year for MIM's to have same size pups.

  6. Sounds like some are attributing the Driver valves to the Power section and others to the preamp section. Regardless its all the same in the end. I've always regarded the "Driver valves as oart of the preamp, so I'd read it as Preamp: 3 x ECC83's, 1 x ECC82. Power amp: 4 x 6L6GC.

    Ampeg V4b:
    Preamp: Tube (2 x 12AX7/ECC83)
    Driver Tubes: (1 x 12AX7/ECC83, 1 x 12AU7/ECC82)
    Power Amp: (4 x 6L6GC)

  7. Tried their early ones and they started to break down and get frizzy. I heard they updated the formula recently so I gave them another shot, way better. And the SS sets sound like SS. If I were recording I might, might change them? I don't know though, they've really raised their game.

  8. Yeah the 450H is a big heavy head that sounds like their BA line of amps that is defiantly Ampeg, just not as Valvey as their other offerings. The PF series comes closer to a real SVT/VB4H, not quite but their light weight small size can be a big plus to some. I'd go for the PF800 which have been pretty roadworthy with very few problems. As far as cabs go the PF I believe goes a bit lower than the SVT otherwise are going to be pretty close.
