1. Hi all

Up for sale – an Alain Caron 5 String Fretless – the ‘king’ of fretless basses.

I bought this originally from a basschatter.  It is a beautiful bass, in mint condition, extremely well made and lovely to play.  It has not really left my studio since I bought it, and then only for recording sessions.  It comes with a well made 'structured' fbass soft case.

The action is quite fast, and the neck is very smooth – I find I can really get about the neck quickly which quite surprised me given the range. The tone is great, particularly when you play with the pick ups and piezo – you can get a real ‘woody’ sound. The B string also has a lovely depth to it, and I find I can dig in and groove with a funky mwaaaah.

I am selling because it's been a tough year, and of my vital organs (bass collection), this gets the least use. I reserve the right to change my mind and keep it if a random shower of money comes out of the sky!  I will miss it.

Having researched a bit and asked around, This bass would have cost 6000 euro new, I am looking for £3000 (GBP) - will consider trades with min £2k cash my way.

I will also provide the document the FBass team sent me (upon my request) with a mapping of the controls, which I found essential to understand the different tone mixes & piezo.

I would be happy to answer any questions, make a sound file or take specific photos if requested.  A few photos included below.

Thanks

Dan

2. I made it to the end of the thread!

On that basis here is my dodgy picture of the wired IEM solution I am setting up based on my conversation with Russ the main man:

I still haven't figured out how to embed it as an image, but it's all good....

Forgive the dubious mixing of single/double cables - I was mainly trying to ensure I had a complete circuit so I know what needs to be ordered!

Cheers

3. Hi all

I have now taken a series of hi res photos, and got a little more background on the bass for anybody interested. Please PM me your email, and I can send details over.

In the meantime, I thought you might like a raunchy 'undressed' shot that I took whilst cleaning the old girl up that shows off that cheeky cherry finish.....

Bah! Tried to get the image to show, but I am too technically inept :) You'll have to click for the pleasure!

4. For sale, an Alleva Coppolo 4 string Jazz bass.

I bought this from the Bass Gallery a while back, and it is a custom job – I believe it was originally a ‘NAMM’ bass, and a collaboration job between Jimmy & Aguilar, as it was built with the OBP pre-amp in it. It has a ‘B’ custom serial number.

The body is spalted alder, with a nice kind of cherry/sunburst finish. I am not sure what type of rosewood is on the neck, but the neck is very smooth and lovely to play. I was originally attracted to this by the low action, the ballsy jazz sound and the obvious attention to detail and quality of the build.

I don't know if anyone remembers but I brought it to the SE Bass Bash a couple of years back.

The controls include the normal pick up volumes, tone, a mid cut/boost (which I don’t use a lot) and a stacked treble/bass boost (which I do, and is way powerful!). The pick ups are in the 70’s position.

I’m selling as I recently bought a vintage YOB jazz bass (Hi Chewy!) and I want to raise some cash to buy a synth for the studio (a DSI Sequential Prophet 6 in case anyone has one to trade!!).

I know everyone says it, but I am a bit in two minds on this one as it is a great bass that I really enjoy… but needs must. I shall let the market decide!

The condition is good, it has been gigged a reasonable amount but I take real care of my guitars. It has one tiny mark on the finish at the bottom, and a light graze – both of which I have taken pictures of, but are quite hard to see. It came with a Levy case, which I can also include unless you have a better one!
Pricewise I am looking for £2100.

Thanks all,
Dan

5. Hi all,

Up for trade – an Alain Caron 5 String Fretless – the ‘king’ of fretless basses.

I bought this from another basschatter a few years ago. It is a beautiful bass, extremely well made and lovely to play. The action is quite fast, and the neck is very smooth – I find I can really get about the neck quickly which quite surprised me given the range. The tone is great, particularly when you play with the pick ups and piezo – you can get a real ‘woody’ sound. The B string also has a lovely depth to it, and I find I can dig in and groove nicely.

So why sell this fine beast? Well, it is not getting the love it deserves, really for two reasons:

I am not playing it enough to get used to the unlined board
I find the controls are a bit too intimidating which means I keep reaching for other basses instead….

So many knobs, and push / pulls!

I am discovering that I like to keep it a bit simpler with basses, and focus on my playing rather than sculpting the sound through an EQ. I wish I could do it – as I know it’s a skill – but I’ve never really learnt! J

Anyway it was in mint condition when I bought it, and it has only left my house a few times since – once to go to a studio, once to the SE Bass bash and once to a local jazz jam. So it is still in pretty much mint condition.

I am interested in trades more than a sale because I do want another fretless, just one I don’t need to try quite so hard with!

In terms of the valuation, it’s a rough figure but I am more interested in the potential trades than exact value…. I would be interested in:

Fretless 4 / 5 - preferably lined
Fodera, MTD, Celinder, Sadowsky

Basically looking for a good quality alternative which is a bit simpler to manage.

I would prefer not to do international shipping (mainly due to lack of experience) but will do for the right bass. The bass has a really well constructed F-Bass case with it, so that will make it easier at least….

Very happy to answer any questions – or add any specific pics if required.

Cheers,

6. I bought a jazz bass from Chewie a couple of weeks ago.

Lovely gent, went to visit and was given a cuppa and some 'alone' time with the wonderful bass - not to mention a complementary and very friendly doggy!

A great transaction, and he couldn't do enough to help. Have no concerns! Top chap.

Cheers

7. Ooh ooh! I love these basses. Totally beautiful feel and finish. The sound is huge, great for gigging live - clear round ballsy tone when you want it, gruff funk or jaco honk when required.

Here is mine!

8. Played the 5 version at the bass show last year - absolutely cracking. Easy to play, great tone and depth.

Would have walked off with it but Warwick had the slightly odd 'german custom' pricing on it of around £5k so I chose to just walk.

Another time and I would be adding this to the collection!

9. Hi all

As a first time international buyer, I was a bit nervous about making a large purchase, but Elguedd/Guido was a star.

Trustworthy, great comms, lots of photos and updates.. he put up with all my questions and gave me extra references to check out so I could calm myself (and the wife).

A pleasure to have bought from. Highly recommended!

Cheers
Dan
