  1. Normally I don't quit, I stay until the band stagnates and we agree that it's time to pull the plug.

    Most recently, I quit!
Myself and the singer formed the band from the remnants of our old band (I'll point out now that I always felt that he struggled to sing the musical style of our old venture).
We got a few song ideas drafted between us, found a drummer, carried on writing, eventually found the right guitarist.
Got the songs written and, after a couple of open mic night type warm ups, hit the road as opening act for a reasonable name.

First night was a train wreck from my perspective, soundcheck with earplugs in then can't find them for the gig meaning that my monitoring was shot to sh1t, but me and the guitarist got a stellar piece in the review. Someone filmed our set, the singer was awful!
Second show. I played, in my opinion, much better as I didn't lose my earplugs. People who were at this show too said they thought I was good at the previous one but had taken it to the next level! 😃 Anyway, I overheard a few people discussing my band and there was a common theme "the band are awesome but the singer is dogpoop"
At the next gig I paid a little more attention to the singer. Yep, he was bad. His stage presence was non-existent and he thought every song was in the key of Yale. I also noticed that, for the first few songs, the crowd were really getting in to it until the singer opened his mouth.
Couple all of this with the things I'd recently found out about his personal life, in particular they way he had been treating his partner (who is a friend of mine and my partners), he's lucky that:
    A. I finished the tour before I quit
    B. I didn't knock him out

  2. Welcome to my world.

Just finished a tour of the UK and quit the band the following day.

Truth be told; I wanted to quit in January but my wonderful young lady convinced me to stick it out until after the tour as:

A, you might feel differently when you've played a string of shows

B, It wasn't fair on the rest of the guys to drop the band 7/8 weeks before the start.

Main reason for quitting was the singer. He had delusions of grandeur on a band level and delusions of adequacy for his vocals/stage presence.

Going to retreat to my guitars, drums and bass to start working on some new songs before coming back fighting later in the year.

  3. All of the gigs listed below are within the next 60 days

    Skindred - Oxford
    Volbeat - Brussels
    Soil - Milton Keynes
    Black Stone Cherry - Sheffield
    The Cure - London
    Black Stone Cherry - London
    Black Stone Cherry - Kentucky
    Black Stone Cherry - Kentucky
    Limp Bizkit - Nottingham

That's all the gigs I'm attending for the rest of the year!

  4. I'm in an originals band so slightly different situation.

I play by ear and feel when creating bass lines so not applying musical theory with any level of intention but, when I've got the line I'm happy with I do like to research/learn why it works as it adds to my palette of possibilities for the future. This method has also allowed me to sit back and write an inventive bass line or two when the only thing I could come up with in the band writing session was a very simple root note and fill type of line.

So yeah, I find music theory interesting but I don't allow my limited knowledge to constrain me.

  5. 4 out of 5 of my 4 string basses have them fitted as I wouldn't want to gig without one available.

I don't use them as much as I used to but in a previous orignals band I had a few songs where I changed to drop d and back a couple of times mid song.

I've bought a couple from the states via eBay but the last one I bought was from a guy in Spain, again via eBay, and they've always worked out significantly cheaper than they can be bought for in the UK.

  6. First Guitar: squire strat - still got it, still use it, still works sounds and plays brilliant. Until this coming Saturday when I pick up my new 6 string, still the only electric guitar I own.

First Bass: Tanglewood Rebel in translucent Red. It's now 20 years old and entered semi retirement. It sits with the others in the stand and gets played fairly frequently. It's gigging days are over but it will never leave me.

I also still own basses number 2, 3, 4 & 5 and all of the acoustic guitars I've ever purchased.

    I think I might have a problem!

  7. This thread is my first awareness that there was a match last night!

I played a gig once when there was a big boxing match on. The stage was at one end of the room, the TVs at the other.
We were obviously doing something right as everyone in then place was well in to our band and not paying attention to the screens. I, on the other hand, got to watch the whole fight :)

  8. My living room amp is Internet and network linked. I can control it via my phone or tablet and I get to listen to US/Canadian rock radio stations with excellent sound quality.

I also use it to tune in to whichever "unsigned" show is playing my bands music.

The DAB reception in my house used to be quite good (I was an early adopter of that particular tech) but these days it's none existent.

So, in summary, Internet radio as a stand alone unit; I probably wouldn't buy.
Internet radio bundled in to some other device that you plan on buying anyway; definitely preferable to an app or having to have a pc running.

  9. In my case after finding "the one" I did the following:

1, add a hipshot x tender on the low E

2, swap the flimsy BBOT bridge for a babicz

3, Rehearse, gig and record with it for 12 months

4, buy it's identical twin and replace all hardware with black variants (including x tender and babicz bridge)

5, be perfectly happy with two identical sounding, lovely playing, slightly different looking basses.

Haven't had (bass) GAS for over 12 months now and the two basses, including mods, cost me appoximately £350. That's total, not each!

  10. Having abandoned my rock ways in the past for a similar venture I'd take number 4 everyday of the week.

I've never made more money or been in a band with such a loyal following as when I had a foray into the psychobilly scene.*

The bass lines are fast and fun. The gigs are (usually) very well attended.

It's definitely something that I'd go back in to if the opportunity arose at the right time.

My Two-penneth and your experience may differ.

*I'm not including the covers bands I've been in as part of this statement.

  11. Rattle and Drum music in Derby have had two Strats stolen.

Here's a link to their Facebook post

Anyone in a few cities radius that can keep an eye out for them?

  12. We had a similar problem:

The guy was a reasonable guitarist but his tone was awful. We sat down as a band and adjusted his tone to fill the gaping hole between bass and vocals and it sounded lush.

Gradually, over the next 3/4 months, more and more bass crept in to "his tone" and the mids fell away. He was also insistent on writing heavier and heavier material and the fact that we needed to have a second guitarist as he didn't want to have to "carry the band musically as it was to much pressure on stage".

As a result the guitarist now finds himself in a band that:

    1, Has no bass player
    2, Has no singer
    3, Has no drummer
4, (possibly) has a second guitarist
5, Has 2 gigs booked early next year

Me and the singer are now working on new material that is more the style we want to be playing and are looking forward to getting a new band together.

  13. Did M2TM last year.

It's not a con or a pay to play, it is a popularity contest. The more people you take to support you the more votes you get and therefore progress through the heats to the final.

We didn't get through as we opted, prior to my arrival in the band, to play the Wolverhampton heat rather than our local Mansfield heat.

Not sure if we're going for it this year. This thread has just reminded me to chat to the guys about it.

Good luck and keep us posted if you get to the festival. I'm going anyway.

  14. Not one, but two, Basschatters for the princely sum of five English pounds.

Music will begin at 8:15 with Dave_the_Bass providing low end duties for Electric Viper.

After a short break Karlfer will be taking to the stage with Troyen.

We'll then make way for the mighty Tytan to close out the evening's entertainment.

Head along and have some fun with us, what have you got to lose?
