1. For sale is my Aguilar GS212, 8 ohm, 600 watts RMS bass cab.

I have not used this for some time as I have invested in two light weight Neodymium speaker cabs. This USA made cab delivers an awesome sound using two twelve inch speakers and an adjustable tweeter. The cabinet is in good condition and the carpet covering has no fluffy bits. The castors are not damaged. There are some minor scuffs on the plastic corners. The grill is unmarked. It comes with a heavy duty cover made from marine material, which cost about £80 when I had this made. This is included in the sale.

Collection only unless you would like to send a courier. I am frequently travelling from Salisbury to Birmingham and sometimes to the Sheffield area so if you live on route I can deliver at no additional charge. These cabinets retail for about £1,100 new so £390 including the cover is a fair price. I am open to reasonable offers.

2. Hello

For sale is my Trace Elliot Hexavalve 380 watt valve amp.

This amp was made in 1992 (serial no 0009) and I have had it since 1996. It comes with an 4u SKB case, the original EQ foot switch and documentation with a circuit diagram. These amps were only produced in fairly low quantities and the Hexa is the most powerful in the family, its smaller brothers being the Quatra and the Twin. This amp has had a gentle life with a just couple of gigs a month and in the last 5 years or so I hardly used it as the type of gigs I do these days do not need the one stage volume. I have always handled it as if it was a baby and kept it indoors.

Inside the amps has a fan to cool the valves and the air is drawn in from the slots in the bottom. As you will see from the images I have lifted the lid with some spacers and this is simply to allow the air to flow more easily. If you wish you can just lower the lid again in its original position. At the rear are two parallel speaker sockets. I will provide the XLR speaker lead with the amp as well as the mains lead.
The six 6550 power tubes give an amazing clear and warm tone, whilst the GP12 graphic allows you to trim to the sound very accurately. The amp can also accept KT88 power tubes. All the valves are in good condition and should not need to be replaced. The amp has no buzz or background noise.

The valve input stage is driven by two ECC 83's tubes and is much more flexible than transistors. This amp delivers 380 watt RMS and always manages to produce a quality sound at any level. When you push it, the sound gets fatter as is typical of valve amplification. I have never ran the master volume above 5. The impedance is switchable between 2 and 4 ohms and it will deliver the full output power at these two settings.
The weight of the amp is substantial so if you are interested it would be best to collect it. I live in Salisbury, Wiltshire. For my work I often travel to the Birmingham area so if you live en route (Oxfordshire, Worcestershire, West Midlands or South Staffordshire) I would be happy to deliver it.

No trades please.

Thank you for looking.

3. I have owned a Hexa valve head since 1996 and have been very pleased with its performance. The sound it produces is clean and warm and is suited to all kind of styles including slap. At high volumes it remains fairly clean but gets fatter and less distinctive so fine for rock but not if you are looking for tight sound. It sounds similar to an Ampeg SVT 2 Pro but with more of an Hifi element. It will not distort easily so if you want a grungy tone, you have to use some sort of effects pedal with it. The amp has been very reliable and I have never had any major problems. It is a quality built amp built inside as well as outside in a time when Trace Elliot did not cut corners. Mine is fitted with 6550 valves, which I believe sound somewhat cleaner than the KT88 that it can also accept. There are 2 speaker outputs, one is a regular jack and the other is an XLR and it produces 380 watts into 2 or 4 ohm. I recommend this amp but it all depends what you are looking for so you should have a good listen before you commit to buying it. I hope this helps.

4.
I have spare 15 and 12" PA speakers lying about. 200watt each Alto Elvis. What are you opinions about using them as a bass cabs?

Cheers.
I have used 2 x 12" Peavey PA cabs with a horn for rehearsals. I had to wind up the bass to get the bottom and roll off the high. It was much better than I thought. Kind of OK, but not fantastic. You would get away with it if you did not have anything else.

5.
Now that ive found my perfect bass, im thinking about saving a little more and getting my perfect amp, i cant afford or have the room for a ampeg svt so im thinking about the ampeg BA - 600 210, just wondering what they sound like? weight? etc and best place to get one
Hi
I have no experience using the BA600 but I would have thought it is a decent combo.
It is rated at 600 watts but you cannot plug in an extension cab.
I assume one of the reasons why you are considering a combo with such power rating is volume.
You may find that despite this, there is only so much volume you can get out of a 2 x 10" speaker enclosure.
This is something to bear in mind if that is important to you before you commit to buy.
Cheers

6.
So ... without being a qualified experience electrician, what should you be regularly doing to keep your amps and speakers in tip top condition?

Is there a routine, like the way you'd top up the fluids and change the filters on your car?
Hi
There is very little you can do.
I would recommend you keep your gear in a room where it is not too cold or damp and keep a cover over it top stop dust from getting inside.
If the speakers are dusty, gently hover them with a brush attachment as the dust could cause some wear.
If your amp is dusty inside do the same.
If you get problems with pots that crackle, just clean them out with contact spray.
If your amp has valves, you could consider replacing them periodically, but it depends on how often you play if you see a benefit or not.
Cheers

7.
Funnily enough, I bought a separate head and cab because of the issue of room (and options for future expansion). Yeah, a combo might take up slightly less room, but with separates you have more manoeuvrability. I don't think a GK700RB-II/210 combo would fit in my fiesta, but I think (hope) the 210RBH will go in the boot and I can have the rack case on the back seat (though really I could do with a shallow one, but maybe in time).
Hi
I have experience using the SWR Super Redhead and Ampeg BA500 and can recommend them both. I have sent you a mail, but in summary I would say that the SWR is more suited to recording and the Ampeg to live performance.
Regards

Offers??????
I just took possession of an Peavey Alpha preamp and although I have only tried it at home it appears to be a very good sounding piece of equipment, which I would recommend.
Have a BUMP on me.

9.
Im getting a crackling noise from the top left speaker on my cab at higher volumes (well sort of ... 5).

Is it more likely to be the connection or the speaker itself as i doesn't crackle at low volumes?

How much would you say it would cost if I'd have to replace the speaker?

Ta very muchly.
It could be that the speaker cone has "bottomed out". This is when the back of voice coil hits the magnet due to extreme cone movement. That can produce a kind of scraping or crackling noise. At low volumes the cone does not move too much and that would explain why it only happens at higher volumes.

10.
If you only have a small PA then you will have to set your levels of ALL instruments to the lowest sound level.
This isn't such a bad isea as you might learn about dynamics and power rather than out and out volume.

Too many people get volume over the ability to 'mix' sound so TOTALLY wrong.. IMO,

You'll read it on this forum as well, when people talk about the volume of their bass rig instead of the ability of the bass EQ to cut through.

Focus on upgrading your PA if the gigs justify it as 1st priority.
Totally agree with all people above. The reason is that the bass drum will drain the power from your amp as the beat coincides with the rhythm on your bass. If the drummer needs to be louder another option is for him to invest in a small powered bass bin with a basic mixer and leave that near his kit. I also agree with the previous comment about bass EQ. The problem is though, that although you can create a sound that cuts through by raising the mids and cutting the lows, it does not always agree with the sound you have in your head.

11. I have tried the Pandora as an effects unit to add some chorus between the bass and the bass amp. The manual indicates that you can use the unit like that. However I agree with previous comments that it is quite noisy. Any of the pre-set tones work much better with headphones rather than for use with an amp as well. Even for recording it is too hissy in my opinion. It is very good for practising.

12. This is something that happened to me with a Peavey speaker which had an aluminium dust cap. The vacuum technique worked fine. I also have use the pin technique on a PA speaker when the vacuum had no impact. You could leave it as it is as it will not affect the sound, but I guess it is the idea that it is dented.

13. Hi
If you boost the eq but keep the pre amp level down so the led does not go into the red area, there should be no distortion at all. However, this depends on your output level and speaker cab. If you boost a lot of bass with maximum power on our amp, it is likely your speakers will complain. I seems like the eq section of the amp would need a service.
I hope this helps.

14. I have one of these basses with a natural ash body. It is an extremely versatile instrument that can give many different tone variations for playing rock right up to funk. I rate it many times more than a Jazz bass. The bridge pick up on its own is awesome.
