  1. OK Finally I have my 76 Jazz. Its a beauty but hasnt been cared for properly. The string tree wes replaced with a washer and a rusty screw but Ive sorted that. The neck relief is all wrong and it needs a good going over. The string nut seems overly high and the fret wire profile is flat. The biggest problem is that the tuners have been replaced with the wrong size(14mm) but I think they should be a bigger diameter, maybe around 18mm ish ? The bushings are still in the headstock and look like the originals.

Q: Can somebody tell me the right tuners for this bass? as Im not sure and dont want to order the wrong size.
Any help greatly appreciated. I'll post pics soon :)

  2. Wow, Im really thankfull for such a great reply @loz196.
You have just described this bass in great detail and yes it is really heavy. Thats why the owner wants to change it. I think I will buy it off him so. I have him down to 800euro now.
    Thanks again Bass friends :)

  3. A year later the bass is finished. Got a brand new neck from Stratosphere on ebay, MIM Deluxe. Cost around 300euro inc tax. USA bridge and ferrules fitted with Aguilar split singles and im still not gone on it. I think the fact it was with a guitar tech for over a year who really messed me around has taken the love out of this bass for me :(

  4. Hi All,
Ive been offered a 70's Fender Jazz at a great price but Im a little bit confused about the serial number. There is no sn on the headstock. There is however one on the neck plate. Its a three bolt neck with binding and block inlays. The seller is a genuine guy who I know personally but I dont want to get stuck with a dodgey bass. I think its a 76 model and he wants 950euro for it. Whats the verdict ??

  5. That looks like a mighty mite alright and cheap too. The luthier is trying to take the fret board off my neck to fit a new truss rod. Existing one has all the thread stripped. He's having a hard time with it and reckons the glue used was never meant to come off. Its taking him months so far and still not off. I might just go crazy and buy a warmoth. My bass is the standard mex 5string Jazz. Its the one with the 5 left hand tuners so some necks are suited to American models and there seems to be different spec on these. It has my head melted :(

  6. Hi guys, I need a new neck for my MIM jazz 5string. Just wondering if any body has got one for sale or can recommend where to get a good one within E.U. so I dont have to pay any import tax. Ive seen the nice 1's in the states but with tax and shipping cost would be cost prohibitive. And yes I have been googling it now for about a month and its melting my head so any help is welcome
    Cheers, Mick

  7. HI Guys, Ive just picked up a 1997 CIJ Fender Jazz. This is my first time to own a decent J bass so I have a few questions.
Its a lovely bass but hasnt been looked after as well as I would have liked.

Firstly the frets are quite worn and the nut is too. Gerry Hayes in Dublin is having a look at that for me tonight.
The bridge seems a little bit out of shape and seems quite flimsy so should I replace it and what are peoples opinions on bridges? Badass Babicz etc
I have heard some negative reviews of the elecs/ p'ups in these jap jazz's and would like your opinions on this too.
Also the bass needs to be tuned each time i pick it up unlike my P bass. Are the stock tuners good quality or should I change these too ?

Any advice or opinion is gratefully accepted !!!

Im not doing anything with this bass untill I have all my homework done and I want it to be right  :scratch_one-s_head: .........

    Thanks in advance,

    Mick

  8. How yis, Im struggling to find any info on a chinese squier i picked up. The links here show me nothing and I dont trust the info on wikipedia. Its a Squier P-Bass with a serial no. CY 081204319. Wiki thinks this is C = China Y = Yako (factory) and 081 is the year 1981?? I really dont think so as the bass is in top nick and was previously owned by a teenager (who wrecked some other guitars) Its a lovely bass with exceptionally low string action , even lower than my USA P bass and it sounds great. Any Ideas ???

  9. Ive bit the bullett and spoke directly to Bag End. Its gonna cost $237+ $113 slow shipping, so $350 all in. That works out about €270.The E18-S is obsolete now and they now supply the E18-A as a replacement. Ive had the driver checked by a trusted amp repair tech, Martin Nolan here in Dublin and he assures me the centre magnet has shifted and the voice coil is catching here. So the cone ,coil, spider etc are all fine but the driver is only fit for the bin. This could only have happened from a hard drop or knock. This is where it gets interesting as I carried it home in the car like a newborn baby and didnt knock or bang it in any way. I called the guy I bought it from and played it for him over the phone. He denys any deception on his behalf and swears he played it just the other day and it was in perfect working order. He has agreed to refund me €90 towards the new driver, thats just 1/3 of the cost which Im not overly happy about but cant really complain. So all in all this in going to cost me €410 for an early type Big Ben with a brand new driver. Thats just a little more than half the cost of a new unit from Thomann, so Im still doing ok. This has definately taught me a lesson on buying used gear, TRY BEFORE YOU BUY !!! Thanks for all the help :)

  10. thanks, Els are gone out of business and Bag End dont do the speaker any more so I have to buy a new Bag End E18-A speaker which is similar to the E 18S. Nowhere stocks a recone kit for this speaker. :(

PS the new speaker is $237 which is €181 to me + the shipping costs which they havnt got back to me with yet.

  11. HI guys, It looks like Im going to have to recone my Big Ben speaker myself.

The big question is " Where do I get a preassembled Re-Cone kit for a Bag End E18S Bass speaker"??? (UK or Europe preferable)

Ive been emailing places in the states and trying to contact repair people her in Ireland and I cant believe nobody has bothered to get back to me!

Any help here is greatly appreciated,

    Thanks, in advance,

    Ska Man

  12. Hi OzMike, Ive been doing a little home work and the speaker isnt moving properly. It was completely stuck at first so I gently pushed and got it moving again. Now it only makes a sound when its pushed inwards and no sound when I release it. So I think its definately the voice coil gone.Trouble is I cant find anyone to re-cone it here in Ireland. Ive been emailing places but nobody has got back to me on it. I watched a youtube vid on diy reconing and I would give this a go myself but cant scource a recone kit for a Bag End E18S speaker. This is a real pain in the arse. Any suggestions welcome, Thanks :)

  13. ok, I have the speaker out and on the floor. It looks fine , theres not a mark on it. in fact apart from a little bit of dust it looks like the day it came out of the shop. the cone is perfect and the skirt at the back around the magnet is also as new. Im lost here and the guy who sold it to me is lost, he claims to have played through it last week and it was working fine.

  14. Hi guys, google is doing my head in on this one.
What is the correct speaker replacement for my Big Ben 1 x18 ? its 400watts ,8ohms.
Im based in Ireland so would prefer to buy from UK or EU supplier to save on shipping costs. Can you also recommend a supplier?
    Thanks, Mick

PS. Yes I am stupid and bought a used cab without trying it out first although at €250 I thought I was getting a good deal.
