if I remember correctly digidesign recommend a swann pcmcia firewire card I've got one somewhere that I used to use with my old thinkpad before I killed it and went macbook and it worked well with my 002
I think these can be had pretty cheaply if you can find them - I think I paid 25 quid or so, years ago and can't remember where from
if your current hard drive isn't firewire then I'd consider using that just for backup
if you can get an interface that'll let you daisy chain firewire devices (I'm not sure all do) -
yeah you would use it bass -> machine -> fuzz -> amp
it's somthing like normal fuzz generates odd harmonics and the machine generates even harmonics
so if a bass sends a 1 to a normal fuzz, the fuzz generates 3 5 7 say
if the same bass sends a 1 to a machine it generates 2 4 6
if you stack them you get 2 3 4 5 5 6 7 7 7 9 9 11 or something like that as the fuzz effects the added harmonics of the machine
that's how I understand it anyway -
I'd get yourself along to a ZVEX dealer and try running a Machine into a Woolly Mammoth, but then you're looking at about 340 quid so not cheap - Machine - discounted and Woolly Mammoth

4003's sometimes go for under a grand... (I got mine off ebay in Jan for just over 600 quid - Montezuma Brown - not the nicest colour, but a rare colour of the year - a bit beaten up but plays well and sounds great) and if it's a very recent model they have a vintage tone setting so that they sound like 4001's
-
or you could buy a different laptop with firewire included - better option
and yeah firewire is better for audio than usb...
usb2 is a bit faster than firewire at data transfer speeds, but it sends bursts of data whereas firewire uses a continuous stream... -
I'd try the rickenbacker or rickresource forums if I were you (also more likely that one will come up for sale on there)
I think you're right in that they're a LE 4001 completely in black as are a totally red with black hardware and binding model (which I've only seen 1 picture of and can't remember the name) and the tuxedo which is white with black hardware and binding
what really differentiates these limited editions from all the rest is the colour coded fretboard... ie the blackstar has a black fretboard
not seen one for sale for a long time... they're like rocking horse s**t... I'd expect a price tag at least in the 2500-3000 pound bracket possibly twice that... they're undoubtedly rarer than the 4005 (basically a 360 bass) and those go for about 3k when you can find one
I'm pretty sure that there were less than 100 of each of these models produced
maybe a better bet is to just find a similar age 4001 in a colour that's not impossible to find as other than the finish they are identical to the stock 4001 -
the important thing is to try them for the application that you want it for...
so if you want to record a particular vocalist get them to audition a few mics and decide which one is best for them
the rode ones have had great reports though for (at least) the last few years -
not a cubase user, but I'd get your album done before playing... just in case

have you seen the new version
the pod x3 live about 350quid
there's no guitar or bass version it's both + mic pre modelling and you can run two channels with independant processing at once
I use a pod2 for recording but I'm sort of gassing for this as I may be starting gigging soon and it'd probably do most of what I want
might try to get the guitard to get one as he's lacking in pedals at the moment and needs a load for the project -
you should also check out Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher - plays a lot of 6 string bass usually accompanied by sequenced material
Home recording help please!

it depends on your computer really... if you've got a PC look at getting a presonus or maudio audio interface and either run whatever software you get packaged with it as an audio sequencer or look at reaper which is free/shareware and supposed to be excellent
if you have a mac then you probably already have garageband then just get the audio interface and plug it in...
as with everything you get what you pay for to some extent
you may or may not want to get a pod or something to use as a DI... the pod 2 is not bad and really cheap on ebay
