I like it..!! Excellent playing all round from a very tight band. Top marks for the very mature Brass arranging as well.

👍

Thanks! I thinking cutting the rhythm section love really helped to keep things tight, and not necessarily in a metronomic way but more of a pocket way. Glad you dig it!

Sorry; far too soporific for my old bones. Are you sure the tape wasn't running at half speed..? Too slow for me to dance to (and I don't dance...). Good production, but not (at all...) my style. Thanks for sharing. :|

No worries, appreciate your honesty!

I am a long-time subscriber to your channel and loved your interview with Tom Kennedy. It was one of the most inspirational interviews I have watched in a long time.

Hi John

That’s so great to hear! I’m really glad you’re enjoying the interviews, Tom was especially awesome to hang out with and absolutely blew me away with his humble musicality. I’ll keep trying to put decent content out there, feel free to help spread the word!

6. Hey guys,
I posted on here a while go but since then my guestlist has grown quite a bit I thought I'd start a new thread in case some of you might like to know about a Podcast/YouTube channel I publish called Bass Lessons Melbourne - Player Profiles.

I interview local and touring bassists and publish the discussion as a youtube video and an audio only podcast episode. You can find the videos here:

And the podcast here:
Apple Podcasts

Spotify

Podomatic

Stitcher

In the meantime check out this episode with the legendary Leland Sklar :)

7. Hey guys,
As some of you may know I've started my own teaching website since moving down under called www.basslessonsmelbourne.com with a view to raising my profile as a teacher and ultimately attracting more students. A sidechain of this has been interviewing local players to get their views on a wide array of bass and music related topics in the hope that player watching it can maybe learn from their advice (or mistakes!). Recently I was super lucky to have Janek Gwizdala agree to swing by while he was in town to do and interview and a bit of a performance. He was super easy to hang with, very giving of his time and just so enthusiastic about music and life (and tennis ;))
I hope you enjoy what I managed to capture.

8. Hey guys
I've recently undertaken the challenge of trying to post a new, original bass video every day for as long as possible. I'm doing this through my instagram account:
https://www.instagra...ssonsmelbourne/
Anyways, check it out and give it a like or a follow if you fancy a daily dose of bassness.
Thanks for your time!

I suspect once you get to a moderate quality level, the preamp matters less than the player. The tonal differences are there between preamps, but nothing that couldn't be replicated by EQ or software to me. Scott Devine has an expensive BAE preamp he's acquired recently, and a Vanderkley Aurora head before that, but before that he just had a good old Markbass head. He sounds pretty much brilliant no matter what he's recording through.

[u][i]Creativity and practice trump gear, I think.

10. Yeah the more I listen the more the REDDI is sticking out as my favourite. I will investigate the clipping issue, but I haven't had any other reports and seems strange that would occur as they are all mono signals converted to stereo so should be equal in both channels. Thanks!

11. Hey Mykesbass, thanks for checking it out, glad you dig the vibe. You're right the differences are pretty small and if you don't have decent headphones are speakers it can be hard to spot any differences at all! It's really interesting to see what you get for your money, and also how far you can go with just consumer level gear too.

12. Hey guys,
I was lucky enough recently to get my hands on a bunch of top class DI boxes including:
Tonecraft 363 Tube DI (!!)
REDDI
Avalon U5
TAB Funkenwerk V71 DI
Rupert Neve DI
So I decided to do a bit of a comparison test of all these boxes alongside my own humble equipment; a Markbass Big Bang and a Mindprint Envoice Channel strip. I play a fingerstyle groove and a slap groove through each unit to give you an idea of how the respond to transients, long notes etc;
The most startling thing I found was actually how well my 'prosumer' units stood up to the big boys, not a million miles away to be honest. Upon closer inspection, the dedicated units are more detailed and solid in the fundamentals though, so they do justify there price tag...mostly ;)
I would be more than happy to take any of the boxes to a session as they all do their job extremely well, just with slightly different flavours and features.
All audio files are available for download from http://www.basslessonsmelbourne.com so you can listen to them in your preferred environment.
Which one is your favourite??? :)

13. Hey guys, as some of you may know I recently launched my own teaching website and have been busy recording youtube video bass lessons and playalongs for it. My idea for this video was to take 7 iconic funk bass players - Rocco, Jaco, Flea, Jamerson, Louis, Larry and Bootsy - and write a groove in the style of each player, then segue them all over the same backing track to show how each bassists approach to the groove shapes the music. I also wanted to do them all on the same bass to show as much as possible that it’s possible to get pretty close tonally to these players sound without having to use the bass they used, and my F Bass VF5 did the job quite well I think.
I plan to do an individual lesson series breaking down and discussing each groove as well so stay tuned for that. In the meantime you can download the PDF for each groove at my website: http://www.basslessonsmelbourne.com
I hope you enjoy watching the video as much as I did making it, these bassists really are masters of funk.

14. Hey guys
Just wanted to let you know I've finally launched my bass teaching website. You can check it out here www.basslessonsmelbourne.com but in the meantime here is a short clip I put together to promo it.
