To be honest I think they are over rated. If you want a real vintage classic with extreme rarity value you need a seventies dark chocolate toffee crisp bar, the ones in the blue wrappers. Now that was something. I would swap one of my basses for one of those.

I bought one of these to use with a 1x15 and add some extra growl to my sound when using my Fender P. It does exactly that and sounds great! If you want a small cab with good mids and tops then this is it but if you want a fat bottom you'll need something else.

Yeah Presonus stuff is really good. I have a Firebox for home recording and have used a Firepod to record bands - the quality is excellent. Good choice.

Using your bass direct into it will work fine. I have done this with an SR-800 and had good results. A bit of waveform editing afterwards always helps in the final mix. I would recommend the software Sound Forge for that. With the bass track just normalise it to even out the overall level (similar to using compression). You can also use Sound Forge to add reverb , eq etc to other tracks. Vocals especially benefit from a good chunk of reverb.

Mic wise SM57 are good to stick in front of a cab but if you are using acoustic guitar I would recommend a PZM (pressure zone mic) which is a lot cheaper and the sound is great with a bit of eq and reverb added afterwards. SM58 is good for vocal - use a spit guard though (you can easily make one from a wire coathanger and a dishcloth).

I have used one of these and liked the sound with the tweeter switched off. I play mainly rock and blues. However , if you are a slap monster you might like a tweeter.

Mmmm sounds good but you are probably right - having the amp and the bass could make me look too much of a JJB anorak (eventhough I am )

Mmmm that Shuker would go nice with my JJ Burnel head , how does it compare to your Fender?

Just saw the Stranglers in Newcastle on Friday. JJ was using two 410s and two 115s. He was probably using them last year too and I have got it wrong , sorry about that.

A modern Fender USA P body will be quite light weight and you could buy one in a nice colour already to save you the hassle of all the spraying and sanding. There is a place in America that strips down and sells the parts from Fender guitars and basses on Ebay called the Stratosphere. You could get a USA of MIJ neck there too. I have bought a few things from them they are reliable and it doesn't take long to come. Go to [url="http://stores.ebay.com/thestratosphere"]Stratosphere[/url] . The only downside to buying from the states is that you will have to pay a customs charge on top so bear that in mind when looking at the prices.

Yeah same size but the USA Fender guard has a notch to allow access to the truss rod at the bottom of the neck. You could also try Mighty Mite pickguards as they are the same size being made under license to Fender - I have one on my USA Fender P.

Carol Appelby was Noel Reddings girlfriend not Jimi's (and later became Noel Redding's wife). Sorry but if I ever went on Mastermind Jimi would be my specialist subject Jimi's longtime girlfriend was called Kathy Etchingham.

Ashdown MAG410T Deep cabinet. This has been well gigged but is still in good condition , not like new obviously but pretty good all the same. Some light scuffing on the corner protectors and the carpet is a bit fluffy in places but it looks ok. Works perfectly and sounds good. Looking for £130. Based in Newcastle area and would prefer collection or could meet up half way someplace if not too far.

Good value for money there - must be the cheapest lightweight 410 around.

Yeah they are very reasonably priced - mine was only £529 from Guitar Guitar which is £70 less than most other places. It came in two days so I would recommend them.

I was lucky enough to support the Stranglers last year and got to scrutinise JJB's gear backstage. He was using four JJ-500 heads though two of them were switched off (for backup presumeably) and the two that were on were going into four Ashdown ABM 410 cabs. It sounded mega (of course!).

Just watched this last night. Yes very good. He is a rock and roll god and blimey has he got a lot of knives !!!! Hope they do a directors cut version with twice as much stuff in it.

Yes of course. Music should be fun so if your band is not fun any more you need a new one. Time to move on dude.

The lower mids are the region between bass and mid , the upper mids are the region between mid and treble. If you only have a three tone controls (bass mid and treble) you will not be able to adjust them on your amp but if you have five knobs or a graphic you can. To get a good growly in ya face p-bass JJ Burnel type sound you need to boost your lower and upper mids whilst keeping the bass mid and treble around neutral - not a scooped sound which will be more like metallica or somebody.

Ah ha ! For 1K we don't need to talk budget amps here. For the type of music you are doing I would highly recommend my set up - an Ashdown JJ-500 JJ Burnel signature head and you should still have enough left over for a good cabinet. Check out my review in the Reviews section.
